VICTORY: DFA cheers as Deb Haaland (NM-1) becomes one of the first Native American women in Congress

Deb Haaland just won her race for Congress in New Mexico's 1st Congressional District and has become, along with Sharice Davids (KS-3) first Native American woman ever elected to the U.S. House.

Democracy for America endorsed Haaland in September.

DFA Chair Jim Dean on Deb Haaland's historic win in New Mexico:

"With her victory tonight, Deb Haaland not only made history as one of the first Native American women to be elected to Congress, she's ensured that New Mexicans have an unrelenting champion for racial and economic justice with deep ties to the grassroots fighting for them in Washington.

"Deb Haaland intimately and personally understands the war on women, immigrants, the environment, and native peoples being waged by this administration and the voice she'll bring to Congress about a whole range of issues is something they've never before had to contend with.

"We were honored to stand with Deb Haaland in this campaign and we look forward to fighting alongside her as she pushes to deliver on a big, bold inclusive populist agenda including Medicare for All, robust civil rights protections, and a federal jobs guarantee. -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America
