DFA endorses James Thompson in Kansas’ 4th Congressional District
BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Today, Democracy for America (DFA) endorsed civil rights attorney James Thompson in the special election for Kansas’ 4th Congressional District. DFA has 11,627 members in Kansas and one million members nationwide.
The national progressive group also simultaneously endorsed Rob Quist (MT-AL), another Democrat running in a special election to fill a seat left open by a Republicans who has joined Donald Trump’s cabinet. Earlier in March, DFA endorsed John Ossoff in his race to replace a Trump appointee in Georgia's 6th Congressional District.
All three Trump appointee special elections offer an important opportunity for Democrats to develop the grassroots base in historically red districts and demonstrate the electoral reach of the rapidly growing grassroots resistance movement that’s standing up to Donald Trump across the country.
DFA Chair Jim Dean on the organization’s endorsement of Thompson:
“A civil rights attorney and a military veteran, James Thompson understands the struggles urban and rural working families in Kansas’ 4th District are facing under the leadership of right-wing extremists in the state.
“While Republicans crow about their dominance in America’s heartland, the grassroots campaign that Thompson is running in Kansas should remind Democrats of what’s possible if we run on populist progressive ideas, focus on real conversations with voters, and refuse to compromise away core values of racial, gender, and economic justice.
“We’re excited to stand with James Thompson in his race for Congress. We can’t wait to see how his bold, values-driven campaign illustrates the rapidly growing power of the grassroots resistance effort that’s confronting Donald Trump’s agenda of hate, division, and giveaways to the super rich in every corner of this country. -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America
Thompson on receiving DFA’s endorsement:
“Democracy for America is a great organization that is dedicated to enabling grassroots organization, educating the public on progressive issues, and working to defend America. I am proud to have earned their endorsement, and look forward to fighting alongside them in Kansas." -- James Thompson
