Nirva LaFortune
Mayor, Providence
As the Ward 3 Councilwoman for Providence, Nirva has professional and lived experience. She is a kid from the South Side, Washington Park and the West End. She is a graduate of Providence’s public schools. She is an immigrant who was once formerly undocumented. She is a lead poison survivor. She is an English language learner and first-generation college student who is now an educator with more than 20 years administrative experience. She is a Black woman of Afro-Latina descent who has faced racism more than once. And she is a proud, single, working mom.
Nirva has a clear vision to make our Capital city the best it can be for all – building safer neighborhoods and affordable housing, improving community-police relations and helping to rebuild our economy post-COVID. She plans to introduce legislation to support affordable housing and pass a bill to ensure students have access to social-emotional support and services in all Providence public schools.
