Houston City Council, District C
Shelley is a native Houstonian who became an accidental activist when she lost dozens of friends to AIDS in the late 80s and early 90s. Through that deeply personal loss, she began involving herself with various organizations aligned with LGBT equality, including the Human Rights Campaign and the Democratic Party. Since that time, she has been fiercely advocating for causes and people she champions, working to be a driving force for positive change in the community. She has been elected four times by Democrats of Senate District 15 to represent them – two terms as Chair of SD15 and two terms on the State Democratic Executive Committee. Under the last two mayors, Shelley has been appointed to City commissions and is currently serving her second appointment to the Independent Police Oversight Board, holding law enforcement accountable. Shelley is an entrepreneur who runs a successful health care consulting and wellness company. She brings a focus on health and wellness to everything she does. An avid cyclist, Shelley loves putting cycling to work for others by participating in numerous charity rides supporting veterans suffering from PTSD, breast cancer research and the MS Society, with her wife, Debra. She has also used cycling to lift up and empower women who have been victims of domestic violence. Together, Shelley and Debra have four children and four grandchildren.
