Let the non-military strategies lead the way, rather than the other way around, which often just makes aid and development work another weapon of war; but then provide the security needed for that work, and make it as international as possible. Also bring in some of the religious and other nonprofit leaders from the Obama Advisory Council and others, to focus on the deeply ethical and moral issues that are at stake in our decisions about future policy in Afghanistan — legitimately protecting Americans from further terrorism, defending women from the Taliban, developing a diplomatic surge, genuinely supporting democracy, and saving innocent lives from the collateral damage of war — to name a few.
The conversation is much too narrow right now on Pennsylvania Avenue and at the U. S. Congress. It’s time for a deeper look and a whole new approach. Stupid people might call that dithering; smart people would call it discernment.

Yana Kunichoff | Significant Changes to Bush-Era Military Commissions Signed Into Law
Yana Kunichoff, Truthout: "President Barack Obama signed a Defense Department spending bill into law Wednesday, which includes a provision that will change the way military commissions are structured. Human rights organizations and legal advocacy groups believe these controversial Bush-Era commissions primarily deny defendants the protections that federal courts provide and have responded with disappointment to their inclusion in defense legislation by a president who, during his presidential campaign, was quoted as saying he would 'reject the Military Commissions Act.'"

Also the results of the question of the day.
I loved all the "Don Juan" books. :-)
An Argentine court has fined the country’s environmental secretary and two politicians for failing to clean up the polluted Riachuelo River that winds through Buenos Aires, a move unique and commendable for its accountability of politicians to citizens’ concerns.
"Your reason and your passion are the rudder and the sails of your seafaring soul. If either your sails or your rudder be broken, you can but toss and drift, or else be held at a standstill in mid-seas. For reason, ruling alone, is a force confining; and passion, unattended, is a flame that burns to its own destruction. Therefore let your soul exalt your reason to the height of passion, that it may sing; And let it direct your passion with reason, that your passion may live through its own daily resurrection, and like the phoenix rise above its own ashes."
~ Kahlil Gibran, 20th century Syrian-born mystic poet, philosopher, and artist from The Prophet
Gibran says it another way as well: "God rests in reason...God moves in passion."
Here’s to passion and reason.
- Paid DC Telemarketeers need to stick to the script. PACs are not Charities in any way, shape or form.
By Susan Rowe on Oct 29, 2009 7:36 PM EDTI want to remind folks that the Democratic Party and OFA is NOT a Charity. If you receive a marketing call from anyone who says otherwise, please do turn them into the DNC.

Reminder:
Political Action Committee (PAC) Contributions are not tax-deductible as a charitable contribution for Federal income tax purposes.
PAC contributions are used in connection with federal elections and is subject to the limitations and prohibitions of the Federal Election Campaign Act.

I'm no Yankees fan...in fact I'm a fan of anyone who beat 'em.
Gearing up for the Bernie Sanders/Jim Hightower event tomorrow...I'll be selling tickets and getting signatures there...oh, and getting those yellow cards filled out for single payer in Vt.
Dominos folks...we just need the open door.
Act Now to Pressure “Management”
Today the House unveiled its healthcare reform package. And the news is all bad.
The Kucinich Amendment, which would give the states a clear path for enacting their own single-payer legislation, was stripped from the bill.
The Weiner Amendment, which would substitute the clean, clear language of HR 676 for the behemoth of a introduced, may not be given its vote in the House—in spite of Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s promise.
While single payer hangs in the balance, PDA will continue to fight for single payer at the state level. Meanwhile, we have a small window of opportunity to get the Kucinich Amendment back in the bill and to make sure that Speaker Pelosi follows through on her promise to allow a vote on single-payer—the first ever in the House.
Democratic House leaders can insert what is called a “Manager’s Amendment” into legislation, even when it is closed to any other amendments. The managers are the majority and minority members who “manage” debate for the bill on each side.
Today, tomorrow, and beyond, we need to call these “managers” and insist that the Kucinich Amendment is restored into the healthcare bill. We also need to urge these leaders to exert pressure on Speaker Pelosi—and exert it on her ourselves—to follow through on her promise to put the Weiner Amendment to a vote.
The “gang” that holds our future in their hands includes:
- Speaker Nancy Pelosi: Washington, DC, office (202) 225-4965; San Francisco office (415) 556-4862
- Majority Leader Steny Hoyer: Washington, DC, office (202) 225-4131; Greenbelt office (301) 474-0119; Waldorf office (301) 843-1577
- Rep. Henry Waxman: Washington, DC, office (202) 225-3976; Los Angeles office (323) 651-1040
- Rep. Charles Rangel: Washington, DC, office (202) 225-4365; New York office (212) 663-3900
- Rep. George Miller: Washington, DC, office (202) 225-2095; Concord office (925) 602-1880; Richmond office (510) 262-6500; Vallejo office (707) 645-1888
It’s crucial for everyone in PDA to make these calls, to make them more than once, and to tell others to make these calls. Act NOW!
In solidarity,
Tim Carpenter, National Director
