So I'll just have to say that those shirts gave me an idear for picking a running mate. I was hoping there'd be some good Dem out there named "Rolle", "Rohl", etc., you get the drift. But anyone I could find was either a GOP or dead (which is, in a way, the same thing this year).

We could go with any number of fine Hispanic gents named Raul, so we could have shirts that said "Barack and Raul".

My nephew the political animal is sure it's going to be Ted Strickland. Anybody here agree?

Rasmussen: Obama's "Centrism" working as polling moves

by kubla000

Tue Jul 08, 2008 at 08:10:34 AM PDT

Rasmussen has new poll data out today which answers a big question here of late:

Why is Obama moving to the center?

Personally, I believe Obama isn't actually moving to the center.  His centrist policies on display the last two weeks are not new policies but rather the moderate side of the candidate in full display.  And today, Rasmussen shows that this message is actually breaking through.  This is significant because while the topline numbers remain essentially unchanged in the head to head, the underlying dynamics are changing in a way that gives Obama sure footing heading into the high negatives season, potentially limiting the eventual impact of the coming 527/GOP/McCain negative onslaught.

The polling also may indicate that Obama's Centrism advertising is starting to pay off, while it runs head to head with McCain's Maverick/Pseudo-Enviro advertising.

Are these the first signs that Obama is winning the ad wars?

- Jessica. You wrote about a state leaders list serve.

By Susan Rowe on Jul 8, 2008 12:50 PM EDT

My hubby is the California for Democracy Steering Committee Chair.  He has never been on any state leaders list serve.  Do you know who is DHA HQ's state leader for California?  Your mention is the first that I've ever heard about a State Leaders list serve.

Not a clue...

DFA made up the "State Leaders" listserve a few years ago with their choice of people and has never told us who is on it (despite my asking several times).  I do know that it's not even all DFA leaders. I've gotten boucebacks from people that work at True Majority (based in Vermont and have never participated in DFV). Also, one of our DFV Steering Committee members was apparently chosen to receive the emails, but can't email out to the listserve. If your husband wants to join, have him email Charles. He's the current moderater.

Susan -

btw, nice post of your's last night about turning red parts of CA blue (interesting to see the Purple States diagram showing most of CA geographically is red).

I live in a part of MA that is the least blue of all (southeastern part), and trends heavily independent.

In my immediate neighborhhod, my house is one of the few not sporting an American flag on the side or on a pole.

(But I'll have one flying after Obama is sworn in as our next prez on 1/20/09.)

- The party was almost non-existent in my county and congressional district in 2003.

By Susan Rowe on Jul 8, 2008 1:47 PM EDT

I took grassroots training anywhere and everywhere I could find it.  We now have grassroots all over the county and district. One of our club's just hit 100 in their membership.  I begged DFA HQ in 2004 to start a training academy or do something online because the Republicans have them in our area. The Republican's political academies are sponsored by the local Chambers of Commerce. DFA HQ even asked me to write some of the info for their training manual.  I asked them to hire a full time person to do it because it was a huge project.  They finely hired Arshad. I love the DFA Training Academy and Night School.

Well, Argentina has the right idea.  The  people who live in the provinces and supply food for the whole  country have been striking for months, resulting in food shortages in Buenos Aires.  Last Friday night (I was in a car passing the scene) there were thousands of protesters in Congresso demanding that the prez (Kristina Kirchner "dictator") lower the taxes that the campesinos have to pay and which go into her coffers.

Well, my taxista last night put her and Bush in the same dictator category and told me that within a short time, 100,000 will gather and demand that Pres. Kirchner step down....and she will.  Funny thing about this country that we don't have.  When enuf people protest, the prez flees.  They're very proactive in getting rid of govt's they don't  like.  Americans are so complacent in comparison.

Last Friday 25 people, protesters and police (who used only clubs) were hurt.  Next time will be much more serious.  People here are furious with their gov't and they DO something about it.  However, they are not up against tazers, which the cops don't use here, nor tear gas. It would appear the U.S. dictatorship is far worse.    There are no *holding areas* here...confrontation is direct and often bloody.

Did I mention nepotism?  First husband, now wife...as prez.  just like our bush/clinton nepotism.

Defeat the Wiretap Bill

The Senate will cast its final vote on warrantless wiretapping late Tuesday or Wednesday, so we need to flood Congress with petitions and calls demanding a no vote on the FISA bill.

Call your Senators through the switchboard at 202-224-3121 or dial direct
http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm
or let BlueAmerica connect you for free:

Join a Facebook group for your state to lobby your Senators:

Last week, thousands of Barack Obama's supporters urged him to oppose the FISA bill. Obama finally responded with a blog post that was wrong on the key issues. In his post Obama wrote, "I'm certainly not perfect, and expect to be held accountable too." We're doing just that through our new Obama Progressive Escrow Fund, to which 550 of you have pledged $83,821 so far.

If you support Obama (as we do) and plan to contribute, consider an informal "pledge" to our escrow fund until Obama demonstrates leadership on the progressive issues you care about most:

Berlin city officials said Tuesday that members of the Democratic candidate's campaign have contacted them about what permission and security issues need to be resolved before Obama could speak in front of the monument in the heart of Berlin.

Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit said the capital would be thrilled to welcome Obama, wherever he wanted to speak.

The prospect of an Obama presidency has excited many in Germany, where trans-Atlantic relations have cooled significantly during the tenure of President George W. Bush. A poll of 501 Germans conducted last Thursday for the Bild am Sonntag newspaper found that 72% would like to see Obama win the presidency, with just 11% preferring McCain.

Listening to America: The Democratic Platform for Change

Democratic National Committee, Obama for America Unveil New Initiative to Involve American People in the Democratic Platform Process

WASHINGTON, DC--Today the Democratic National Committee and Obama for America unveiled a bold new initiative to involve the American people in the development of the Democratic National Platform. This year, for the first time, voters will have the opportunity to take part in Platform Meetings in all 50 states to help shape the Democratic Platform. DNC Chairman Howard also announced that Governor Napolitano will chair the Platform Drafting Committee. Michael Yaki will serve as National Platform Director and Karen Kornbluh will be the Principal Author of the Platform.

Members of the public will be invited to host and attend Platform Meetings in their communities as an opportunity to exchange ideas and share perspectives on the challenges we face. To facilitate the process, the Obama campaign and the DNC will send policy experts and DNC Platform Committee members to as many meetings as possible to serve as facilitators. Each Platform Meeting will produce a written summary that will be reviewed and considered by the Platform Committee.

"From the beginning, we said we were going bring down the traditional walls of the Democratic Convention and make this event more accessible and include as many people as possible," said Democratic National Committee Chair Howard Dean. "This process will empower Americans in all 50 states to make their voices heard as they help write the document that embodies our Party's values and vision for the future. Barack Obama will bring real change to Washington, and as we write the Democratic Platform, there will be a clear choice between more of the same failed policies of the Bush Administration with John McCain or real change with Barack Obama who will make the American people, not the special interests, the priority again."

"Barack Obama believes that every American should be able to contribute to the Democratic Platform, just as record numbers have participated in this campaign," said Steve Hildebrand of Obama for America. "It's not the lawmakers in Washington who live the day-to-day reality of our policies--it's workers, teachers, parents and first responders--everyday Americans who just want to the best for their families. What better way than to incorporate their voices into the process than to have them help shape the Democratic Platform, the statement of our deals, values, and proposal for change."

Registration is available at
http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/listening/, starting today through July 15th. The Platform Meetings will occur across the country from July 19th through July 27th.

A National Hearing will take place August 1st in Cleveland, Ohio, where presentations will be made before the Platform Drafting Committee. The Committee will then meet separately August 2nd and 3rd to draft the Democratic Platform. The Platform Drafting Committee is responsible for preparing an initial draft of the Platform, which is used as a working document by the Platform Committee at its meeting.

Also named as members to serve on the Platform Drafting Committee are:

U.S. Representative Tammy Baldwin; State Representative Dan Blue of North Carolina; Maryland Lt. Governor Anthony Brown; Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman; U.S. Representative Rosa DeLauro; DNC Secretary Alice Germond; Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm; Donna Harris-Aiken, a National Education Association Policy Advisor; Platform Policy Advisor Heather Higginbottom; Platform Policy Advisor Chris Jennings; Florida Tallahassee Commissioner Alan Katz; AFL-CIO Policy Director Thea Lee; UFCW Local 1428 President Connie Leyva; U.S. Representative Patrick Murphy; Speaker Emeritus of the California State Assembly Fabian Nunez; Obama for America Foreign Policy Advisor Susan Rice; U.S. Representative Linda Sanchez; Youth Representative Giancarlo Sopa of Florida; Ron His Horse is Thunder, Chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe of North Dakota.

The full Platform Committee will meet and recommend adoption of the platform August 9th in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Governor Deval Patrick of Massachusetts, former New Mexico Attorney General Patricia Madrid, and former Discovery Communications President and CEO Judith McHale serve as Chairs of the full Platform Committee. At the Platform Committee meeting, members discuss each plank of a draft platform. They have the opportunity to submit new proposed planks, or amendments to the draft. Proposals and amendments must be approved by a majority of the members present and voting.

Meetings of the Drafting Committee and full Committee are open to the public and press. Details will be announced at a later date.

Michael Yaki will serve as National Platform Director. A lawyer in private practice, Yaki is a former senior aide to Speaker Pelosi from 1989-1996 and worked on the 1992 Democratic Platform. He also served as a member of the Board of Supervisors in San Francisco, CA from 1996-2001 and has served as a Commissioner on the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights from 2005 to the present.

Karen Kornbluh will be the Principal Author of the Platform, while on leave from Senator Obama's Senate office where she serves as Policy Director. Previously, Kornbluh directed the New America Foundation's Work and Family Program, where she published articles in the Atlantic Monthly, New York Times and Washington Post calling for new policies to support families in the global economy. Kornbluh served as Deputy Chief of Staff at the US Treasury Department and Director of Legislative Affairs at the Federal Communications Commission.

Thanks for posting that 50-state piece.

I'm glad my guv (Deval Patrick) is part of the platform committee.

- This is a very wondeful thing. Our state party did this.

By Susan Rowe on Jul 8, 2008 2:26 PM EDT

It was a huge success.  The CDP has a very progressive party platform because of it.  Christine Pelosi was the projects leader.  She was amazing.  Everybody told her it couldn't be done but she it anyway and it worked.

Christine has a new book out called Campaign Boot Camp. It is very good.

- Christine Pelosi is a wonderful person. It was an honor for me last month to be able to cast a vote for her re-election to the DNC.

Kobyashi Maru This is a wonderful little piece that I ran across on the no-win situation faced by the Federal Reserve in dealing with the economic disaster that we all find ourselves trapped in courtesy of the perverted form of looter capitalism that has destroyed the dollar and is on the brink of beggaring the country while Wall Street stooges Paulson and Bernanke provide rearguard cover for their criminal friends.
