The Spirit of Howard Dean
Linked to groups: Democracy for Maryland
It's been almost four years since we coalesced around a dynamic progressive
voice - Howard Dean. His campaign for the Presidency ignited a flame of
conscious within many of us. And in the intervening years, the glow of that
flame has led many of us down a path of civic engagement and activism for
the progressive cause. It truly is amazing that after all this time - we
are still connected and working toward our shared goals.
As you are well aware, Governor Dean's campaign has evolved into the
Democracy for America movement and DFA was very active in Congressional
races throughout the country this past election cycle. It's financial and
managerial contribution certainly benefited many winning candidates who
contributed to the change of power on Capitol Hill. If you were like me,
small dollar contributions (also referred to as Dean Dollars) went to
progressive candidates in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, California and
Virginia. Plus, we have a presidential campaign to support!
This coming cycle, we can be much more focused on key Congressional races.
Not only must we boost the presence of progressive candidates, we also must
hold our own incumbents to the same standards we have applied for
perspective candidates seeking our help. We have a Congressional race here
in Maryland that warrants our attention - Donna Edwards' primary
challenge against eight-term Congressman Albert Wynn.
Wynn's record of voting for the bankruptcy bill, for forcing Terri Schaivo
to live on a machine, for the war in Iraq, for big corporate energy, for
gutting the endangered species act, and other votes for the Bush policies
certainly do not reflect the vision professed by candidate Howard Dean that
drew us together in the first place. As we look for places to invest our
dollars to make America more socially progressive and fiscally responsible,
we should look in our own backyard.
The reporting period ends June 30th. A donation of $10, $25 or $100 can
certainly help boost Donna Edwards' campaign. Donna came within 3,000 votes
of beating Al Wynn last election - all on a shoestring. Wynn is looking to
corporate America to build his war chest and the press is certainly aware of
the obstacles that face any challenger in this election. Let's help turn
the tide of conventional wisdom. Maryland should produce its own Ned
Lamont. Please take a moment to make a small contribution (or a large one
if you can!) The spirit that brought us together in the first place is as
vibrant as ever - and we could find no better reflection than in Donna
Edwards.
Please visit Donna Edwards' website and make a donation via ActBlue:

Also, please ask Democracy for America to endorse Donna's campaign for
Congress. Contact thughes@democracyforamerica.com or call 802-651-3200.
Thank you and I look forward to working with you as we take back America.
We have the power!
