War Made Easy Screening - Wednesday, August 8, 6:30 p.m.

Written by: Nancy Jacobson on Aug 6, 2007 1:26 PM EDT

WAR MADE EASY
How Presidents & Pundits Keep Spinning Us to Death.

War Made Easy reaches into the Orwellian memory hole to expose a 50-year pattern of government deception and media spin that has dragged the United States into one war after another from Vietnam to Iraq.   Narrated by actor and activist Sean Penn, the film exhumes remarkable archival footage of official distortion and exaggeration from LBJ to George W. Bush, revealing in stunning detail how the American news media have uncritically disseminated the pro-war messages of successive presidential administrations.

War Made Easy gives special attention to parallels between the Vietnam war and the war in Iraq. Guided by media critic Norman Solomon's meticulous research and tough-minded analysis, the film presents disturbing examples of propaganda and media complicity from the present alongside rare footage of political leaders and leading journalists from the past, including Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Defense Secretary Robert McNamara, dissident Senator Wayne Morse, and news correspondents Walter Cronkite and Morley Safer.

Norman Solomon's work has been praised by the Los Angeles Times as "brutally persuasive" and essential "for those who would like greater context with their bitter morning coffee." This film now offers a chance to see that context on the screen.  (Some of you will recall that Norman Solomon was interviewed in the Bill Moyer's Special on the Media's role leading up to the War in Iraq)   Approx. 72 minutes

LOCATION & DIRECTIONS:  The meeting will be held at the Classroom Teachers' Association Headquarters (CTA) at 1020 Webster Avenue, Orlando, FL  32804 at 6:30 P.M.  Webster intersects with Edgewater Drive opposite Blodgett's Nursery, just south of the entrance to Bishop Moore High School.  The CTA Headquarters will be on your left about a block or so in.  It is set back from the road, but there is a sign and plenty of surface parking.

Call for Election Day Volunteers

Written by: Nancy Jacobson on Nov 3, 2006 4:30 PM EST

Linked to groups: Central Florida for Democracy

We receive many requests for volunteers, and there will be Get-out-the-Vote (GOTV) activities all over Central Florida on Tuesday, November 7. There are also volunteers needed the night before to put out signs at polling places and other tasks.

This "event" is the place for you to sign up if you have any time available on Monday night or Tuesday from 7:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M.  If you sign up, briefly tell us your County (Orange, Seminole, or Lake) and when you are available to volunteer. There isn't a lot of space for the messages so put the important stuff first.

We can then put you in touch with the campaign that best fits your time slot. A lot of it will be phoning Democratic voters to make sure they vote on Tuesday. If you are already working on a campaign on Election Day, that's great!!

Even if you only have an hour or so, it can make a huge difference!!!

You can "RSVP" and let us know you are available on Election Day at:

Davis Campaign Hosts Nine Debate Watch Parties

Written by: Nancy Jacobson on Oct 23, 2006 11:57 PM EDT

Linked to groups: Democracy for Florida

On Tuesday October 24, 2006, the Davis/Jones Campaign will be hosting nine (9) debate watch parties around the state.

It's bound to be an interesting debate, with the release today of the Quinnipiac poll showing Davis and Crist in a statistical dead heat. This will be Crist's first serious debate since the primaries began, since the Gallagher debates were nothing more than "I'm more like Jeb, no, I'm more like Jeb" ad nauseum.

See if there is a debate party near you. If not, check your local TV listings. The debate broadcast begins at 8:00 P.M.; however, most locations begin the party earlier.

More than three years ago, George W. Bush declared major military operations in Iraq over, yet we still occupy that country with conflicting and vague ideas as to our mission there. For all their sacrifices, the men and women of our Armed Forces deserve more from us.

Today, the situation on the ground is increasingly dangerous for our troops and for Iraqi citizens. Where do we go from here? What is our exit strategy?

We have gathered an outstanding panel of experts who will candidly address the political, social, religious, military and economic realities presented by the Iraq conflict.

Panelists

Peter W. Galbraith
Former Ambassador to Croatia
in Clinton Administration,
Senior Diplomatic Fellow
Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation
Author of "The End of Iraq" (2006)

Lawrence J. Korb
Former Assistant Secretary of Defense
in Reagan Administration,
Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress,
Co-author of "Strategic Redeployment 2.0"

Ujjayant Chakravorty, PhD.

Join us to learn more about the challenges the Iraq conflict currently presents to us as a nation and ask questions of our panelists. Together we can develop and promote a realistic, positive, and progressive resolution to the crisis in Iraq.

Open to the public. Admission is free. Due to limited seating, we recommend that you RSVP and arrive early. If you have questions or encounter difficulty registering here please call 407-897-6061 to RSVP.
