Victory in Michigan for Gary Peters

Written by: Dave on Nov 7, 2008 11:09 AM EST

On Election Night, Gary Peters won his race for Michigan's 9th Congressional District.  Here's what Congressman-Elect Peters had to say:

Dear Friends,

All of the votes have been counted, the results are in, and I am truly humbled to be able to tell you that I will be the next Congressman from Michigan's 9th District.

This victory belongs to all of us - to everyone who I met on the campaign trail, everyone who supported me, and everyone who believed in this campaign from the start.

Thanks to you, we will be able to reinvest in our economy to create jobs and get Michigan moving forward again now.

Thanks to you, we will have a voice in Washington that fights for the auto industry – not the oil companies – and that demands real action to make Michigan the world leader in next-generation vehicles.

Thanks to you, more American children will be able to see doctors, and we can begin the critical work of making sure that all Americans have access to quality, affordable health care.

Thanks to you, we will have better trade agreements and tax policies that put American workers on a level playing field and that stop the hemorrhaging of jobs overseas.

And thanks to you, we can finally start to bring a safe and responsible end to the war in Iraq.

From the start, this campaign has been a real grassroots effort. And from the blisters on the feet of the canvass team and our volunteers, it remained a grassroots effort straight through until the end. We knocked on almost 400,000 doors, we made over 300,000 phone calls, and we had over 5,700 individual contributors who donated to this campaign

And we have brought people together from all across Oakland County – including people who may never have been on the same side of a campaign before – because we knew that the only way to change Washington was to work together, and take action.

Now the even more important work must begin. We must move past the partisan divisions of the past eight years and work in a truly bipartisan way.

Just like this campaign was a team effort, with Democrats and Republicans and Independents working together – it will take a team effort to solve the challenges facing Michigan and the United States. This task will not be easy, and we will not accomplish all of our goals overnight, but I am confident that we will succeed.

Thank you again for all that you have done, for your support, your hard work, and your commitment to bringing real change to Oakland County. I am deeply honored by your confidence, and I look forward to working for you, and for all of us, in Washington.

Sincerely,

Gary Peters
Congressman-Elect
Michigan's 9th Congressional District

Victory in Connecticut for Jim Himes

Written by: Dave on Nov 7, 2008 10:39 AM EST

On Election Night, Jim Himes won his race for Connecticut's 4th Congressional District.  With his victory, the last remaining Republican congressman in New England was unseated, bringing us one big step closer to a progressive America.  Thanks to everyone for supporting him!  Here's what Congressman-Elect Himes had to say:

Words cannot express the gratitude I feel for you today.

Last night, we made history together. I could not be prouder or more honored to be joining President-Elect Barack Obama in Washington D.C. this January to work to restore the American Dream for our families at home and to restore the prestige of America abroad.

We are living in truly historic times -- and we are facing truly historic challenges. I could not have reached this point without your support, and I will need your support in the coming weeks and months as our new President and the new Congress work together to address the monumental tasks ahead of us. I have no doubt that we will be able to tackle these big challenges, because that is what we as Americans have always done.

But today, as we rest up from the long campaign and gear up for what lies ahead, I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you for pounding the pavement, knocking on doors, hitting the phones, and spreading the word. Thank you for powering our campaign with your contributions, for your thoughts, for your ideas, and for inspiring me on the campaign trail every day. And thank you most of all for entrusting me with your vote and for joining me on the journey we've just completed -- and the journey yet to come.

Sincerely,

Jim
