DFA New Haven: Meeting Recap and Upcoming Events
Linked to groups: DFA New Haven
Dear DFA New Haven,
Thanks for those who came to Wall Street Pizza on Wednesday, I was happy to see our attendance breaking back into double digits! I hope we are able to continue to build on this momentum by inviting a new speaker every month. If we can get a dozen + people every month, I think that would be a track record good enough to lure some bigger name speakers such as Richard Blumenthal, Rosa DeLauro, and Phil in the Blank.
Our speaker on Wednesday - Stephanie Farber - gave an excellent account of the Hilltop Brigade -
This group already has an email list of SEVEN HUNDRED people from our district who are willing to travel to adjacent congressional districts to canvass for Jim Himes, Joe Courtney, and Chris Murphy, would you like to join them?
If you volunteer - they ask for 3 Saturdays of your time - the Saturday before the election (Nov 1), and 2 of the 4 previous Saturdays (Oct 4, 11, 18, 25).
On these three Saturdays you will go canvassing - the most effective political tool in the book - under the guidance and direction of a team captain - who works with the campaign field director to make the whole process go smoothly as possible - and can give you whatever assistance and support you need. In 2006 this organization proved very effective. Joe Courtney - who won by less than 100 votes - might not be a CT congressmen without the Hilltop Brigade!
The Hilltop Brigade also wants you to recruit your friends by hosting house parties. The Hilltop Brigade has many connections - and promises to provide a speaker to your party - in order to draw a crowd.
If you choose not to volunteer as an individual, perhaps you would like to come out on October 11th, when DFA New Haven will volunteer en masse for the Hilltop Brigade - we can all be on the same team! - More on this event later.
Go to their website to sign up to volunteer now:
I hope the meeting was enjoyed by all, stay tuned to see who we are able to line up for next month -and please suggest any names for speakers that you can think of!

For months, the White House and Senate Republicans have been content to let a political impasse over vacancies at the Federal Election Commission persist, sidelining the regulatory agency in the throes of a heated presidential campaign.
Senator John McCain greeted New York firefighters at the Engine Company 54 and Ladder Company 4 firehouse on Thursday. He was said to be devoting attention to concerns at the F.E.C.
But on Tuesday, President Bush suddenly announced three new nominees to the commission. He also backed away from Republicans’ insistence that the nomination of Hans von Spakovsky, a former Justice Department official who faces vigorous opposition from Democrats, be voted upon with other nominees to the commission.
The reason for the about-face? ...

He was a member of St. Mary’s and St. Ambrose parishes, Knights of Columbus and UAW Local 662. Jimmie was a devoted husband and beloved father. He loved sports, especially basketball, and spent many years volunteering his time to coach intramural basketball for the fifth- and sixth-graders at St. Mary’s School. By Denise in San Mateo County on May 9, 2008 10:11 AM EDTI do not want to "hit" or "beat" or "target" political candidates. Besides, I don't think McCain will be the Republican nominee and am looking for a September Surprise. Republicans are averse to long campaigns since they aren't keen on a lot of citizen input to begin with. That, I suspect, is why the others left the field and decided to let the "maverick" run around the country and run off his mouth. Meanwhile, Huckabee is stealthily collecting money, making speeches and coming in second without campaigning.
We are hitting John McCain where it hurts. Our goal is to expose McCain as the special interest hypocrite he has become. Our plan starts with running aggressive ads tomorrow in the next primary state - West Virginia - unmasking the McCain myth.
With your support, we will target the same voters who John McCain thinks are crucial to Republican victory in November.
Now is the time to act. Be a part of the team that beats McCain. Contribute $50 today.
https://democracyforamerica.com/contribute/mccain
The first ad will expose McCain's gas tax for the worthless gimmick that it is. $30 for you, $11 billion for Exxon-Mobil.
Our people-powered campaign will target the same voting bloc McCain is targeting with revealing ads on drive time and sports radio starting tomorrow. This is only the beginning. The more DFA members take action, the faster we can escalate the attack.
With grassroots donors behind us, we will unmask the McCain myth and show voters that this fraud does not belong in the White House.
Your $50 makes the difference. Help DFA get this ad on the air.

Thank you for putting your contribution into action.

Justin, nice job keeping your chapter going and yes, having a speaker come in is one way to keep the group attendance up. It helps with giving the group focus. We usually try have the speaker be relevant to an action in the community we can do....as you seem to have with the Hill Top Brigade.
Our group in Pasadena, CA sometimes struggles with attendance at our meetings. Oftentimes it's the steering committee plus 5 or 6 members. We have a 264 member DFA Link list but activating 10 % of them is a challenge.
http://democracyforamerica.com/groups/385-dfa-pasadena
Something else we are making a regular effort on is doing blog postings (with pics) of our actions or meetings when they're worth it. We then send out a message to our membership with a link to the blog. We are hoping that our membership seeing our regular actions might be drawn to attend a future one.
We intend on trying to call members ahead of our chapter meetings to remind them more directly. We've done it once. Probably it's going to have to become a habit to become effective.
I could go on. The important thing is that our chapter should be working with active chapters like yours. Talking, emailing and networking with other active chapters to learn from each other and well....develop our own national sense of community. No chapter need be alone so to speak.
I'm going to encourage our leadership to regularly check Blog for America and look for good postings like yours from other chapters and leave comments and develop friendships online towards this end.
If you feel like it, shoot me an email or call - pbriggs@greeneggsandham.org - 626-296-1607 . It would be great to hear more about your group's story and what you have planned.
Best Regards,
Patrick Briggs,
Pasadena DFA Chapter Coordinator
...I ain't giving any more than my $25 to Mr. Obama till he tells us up front that he is not paying off Clinton, b/c paying off Clinton is paying off Penn, Begala, Carville, and all those other leeches that feed on the blood of politicians, not to mention paying back her sizable fortune.

Obama has gotten my last dollar if Penn gets a penny of it.
Why would BO want to help HC pay off her campaign debts (with BO supporters money) unless he wants her as his running mate; which I think is the best idea to beat Huck/Rice. Or is the deal that her debt is paid off and she leaves the race? Just guessing.
Huck is very likeable, brings in the RW religious vote and the sleepwalkers who want to have a beer with him... and Condi...well, black AND a woman.
A Huck/Rice tickie would likely be unbeatable, and prolly further split the country race and gender wise.
It's a mess. Only the dems could have done this...eating their own.

Thank you, Judy, for the articles. I've taken heat here on the blog for standing up for the Palestinians and been called anti-semitic. People here in Buenos Aires are not fond of Israel to put it mildly. They see Israel and the US are being bullies and identical in their lust for power, land and resources.
I just wish all Americans could live or travel abroad and open their hearts and minds.

Sen. Barack Obama is in talks to make an appearance at the Charleston Rotary Club's next meeting, Rotary officials said.
Plans have not been finalized, but Obama, the Democratic presidential frontrunner, is considering speaking at the club's meeting at the Charleston Civic Center, which begins at noon Monday, Rotary president-elect Todd Goldman said.

Good news : I'll see you at the booksigning.
Bad ( but old ) news : I was chased out of N.H. DFA by the previous powers that existed there - the same ones who ultimately left, complaining that you had turned the N.H. local into a Lamont "fan club" - lol. Good riddance to "Missy" and her crowd.

Obama planning visit to Kentucky as primary nears
The Associated Press
LOUISVILLE, Ky. --
Sen. Barack Obama's campaign says the Democrat will be in Kentucky next week as the state's primary nears.
It will be the third trip to the state for Obama,

Howard did MUCH more of the heavy lifting for John Kerry than he will have to for Obama.
Obama is already responding to McCain's attacks - something Kerry missed the "swift" boat on.

I'll make the same offer to folks along 287 in Jersey, I-80 between NJ and I-81, I-81 from NJ to Baltimore, and Baltimore to DeanFest. Room for five more.
Make that I-83 from York PA to Baltimore !
for VP? From Rasmussen Reports. Only thing is these folks didn't do their homework. They incorrectly assert Webb was a Navy officer. He went to USNA - was an officer in the Marines then Secty of the Navy.
http://rasmussenreports.com/public_content/political_commentary/commentary_by_gerald_m_pomper/obama_s_vice_president
I sure hope Monica is wrong about McCain not being their nominee although it does seem ridiculous that they would run such an old fellow who must seem 'lefty' to the right wing nuts - in other words, beatable.
I agree Seashell Condi is terrifying.
Phil, I never thought before that the 'oilmen' might be manufacturing the food shortage to keep us out of the ethanol business - good thought.
David Stevenson I think -- I dig 'Go-Bama' for a slogan - would work any where but Alabama lol.
Guess that's all for the moment.
mary I think it'll be Webb altho my cockles want Schweitzer, Webb prolly brings more to the ticket.
I heard some gossip on the web -- one is that Edwards inadvertently said on Morning Joe that he 'voted for him' in the primary - draw your own conclusions. It's in a KOS diary.
I read somewhere that ABC says Obama has passed Hill in SDs.
annilow -
I think DCW is more accurate than ABC regarding SDs (has Clinton up by 6; Clinton's 269.5 to Obama's 263):
http://demconwatch.blogspot.com/2008/01/superdelegate-list.html
...
Superdelegate Comparison
| Candidate | DCW | CNN | NBC | AP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clinton | 269.5 | 268 | 274 | 271 |
| Obama | 263 | 258 | 260 | 256 |
| Updated 5/9/2008 |
...
At the moment, Senator Clinton’s team is busily trying to convince Superdelegates and pundits that she is more electable than Barack Obama. For reasons discussed in a separate article, it doesn’t matter. Even if every single Superdelegate was convinced that the former First Lady is somewhat more electable than Obama, that is not enough of a reason to deny him the nomination.
With this in mind, Rasmussen Reports will soon end our daily tracking of the Democratic race and focus exclusively on the general election competition between Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama. Barring something totally unforeseen, that is the choice American voters will have before them in November. While we have not firmly decided upon a final day for tracking the Democratic race, it is coming soon
Asked on CNN about Mr. McCain’s recent statement that the radical Palestinian party Hamas, considered by the United States to be a terrorist organization, would favor Mr. Obama’s election, Mr. Obama said it was offensive and called it a smear.
Yes, Fred. And Obama said McCain was *losing his bearings*. LOL
And she definitely fills the empty space Hillary leaves, but Feinstein is more of a business-woman type and would appeal more to the moderate independents on the fence.
could also help nail down most of the Jewish vote
- I actually like Boxer better. She was strong behind Biden on the so-called "partition" (a bad word, reminiscent of the I/P mess) The United States of Iraq idea, but my political instincts tell me Feinstein would be better for the moderate conservative swing voters. I could be wrong. It's just a hunch.
Feinstein attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart High School and was given a Catholic religious education, but also attended Hebrew school and was confirmed in the Jewish faith at the age of thirteen, having said that she has "always considered [herself] Jewish".[4]
I'm back on my beloved MAC but can't link? Is there a secret to it? I don't have a toolbar again. ;-(
mary vb I finally caved and took Monica's advice and downloaded Firefox and it does seem to help (I'm on a Mac too). Sometimes I still get the 'text only' box altho this one doesn't automatically link. So I bookmarked a web page w/ the HTML code for linking and just copy it down substituting my link. It is a pain in the rear but it is an alternative. What's driving me nuts is if I leave for even a second I have to log back in.
http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/
Now she's saying she should be at the top of the ticket. A must read. She isn't bowing out graciously that's for sure.
The Dream Ticket is a NIGHTMARE! Hillary is a Neocon, folks. She voted for the war, the Kyl/Liberbman Amerndment, refused to negotiate with"enemy countries", and has promised obliteration of Iran and any country that opposes us. She's taken money from major lobbyists and right wingers such as Scaife and Murdock, is in conclusion with the military/industrial complex, and husband Bill has taken lots of money from the Columbian government and other governments that do not support the best interests of the American people. What's wrong with people's heads? Clinton would negate everything Obama and the grassroots stands for.
Annilow, I felt the same way you do, but am more nuanced today. I don't want Penn, Carville, and any of those creeps to get my money, but even more I want them to go away. Let them take their marbles and run. They've done enough damage.
So, while Obama will get my money until he wins the presidency, I understand and concur with how you feel.
And so another day. As usual the weather forecast is warm and sunny, rain, wind, snow showers. In Colorado, we get it all.
Have a beautiful day, friends.
Boxer and Webb pass, Feinstein fails
Here's the link to roll call vote
- Then again, if the object is to secure the feminist vote
By Fred from Oregon on May 9, 2008 12:02 PM EDTHillary supporters did not seem to mind her voting on Kyl-Lieberman.
But not because she is conservative-leaning. VPs are often used to balance tickets to win elections. The reason Hillary is a nightmare is the same reason her nomination would be a nightmare. It would drive away independents and liberals, and actually energize the conservative base. The idea of Bill back in the white house (by hook or by crook, as it were) it the nightmare.
The biggest things she had going for her in this primary was: (1) name-recognition. (2) Being a woman (3) being white.
Everything else about her is highly negative
In all fairness, though one has to say that if she had never married Bill, and had never been first lady, she might have been a better candidate, and a better person, for that matter.
Senator McCain probably mis-heard Senator Obama - and thought Obama claimed McCain was losing his hearing.
Hi Fred,
I agree with your assessment. I think along the way of life we make mistakes, give in to our worst instincts, have done things we regret, but we can learn from them, become deeper, gain more breadth and compassion.
I think Hillary and Bill compromised along the way, made enough bargains with the devil for power, influence, and wealth that ethics went out the window. I think we're seeing a woman out of control, imploding. There is no reasoning, no genuine love of country and people in what she is doing. It is bloody, no-holds-barred ambition, and that to me is dangerous.
Both Hillary and Bill are extremely talented, have received the best benefits and opportunities of this society, but somewhere gratitude and real service to the country got lost in personal ambition.
Plus, while Hillary is smart and capable, she hasn't shown good judgment in many of her decisions, not least marrying Bill. Frankly, Obama is much the more intelligent of the candidates. The question is, since we haven't seen intelligence in office for at least 16 years, will Americans even recognize it, appreciate it, and respond with intelligence?
And, McCain is no threat. The man is failing: he is senile.
