An Open Letter to Americans of Conscience (Please Read!)

From Eyad el-Sarraj
Founder and President of the Gaza Community Mental Health Program; Leader of the International Campaign to End the Siege of Gaza

In late August, hope came to Gaza in the form of two small wooden boats and their 40 passengers who had sailed from Cyprus to break the 14-month-old Israeli siege. They had answered our call and after months of preparation, it was a triumphant moment when they entered our waters.

The passengers on the "Free Gaza" and "Liberty" wanted Gazans to know that the entire world would not stand passively by while they remain locked in a huge prison. They would not be quiet while more than a million people the majority of them children  are being deliberately deprived of urgent medical care and medicines, of electricity and fuel to run hospitals and sewage systems, of potable water and supplies of food, clothing and raw materials.

I hope that you will not stand silently by while the people of Gaza are deprived of their dignity and all the basic requirements for a decent life. I hope that you will understand that the kind of collective punishment that Gazans have endured since June 2007 is morally wrong and a serious violation of international humanitarian law.

The siege is not just killing the spirit and in some cases the lives of Gazans. It is also sowing seeds of violence, hatred and extremism and destroying all hopes for a peaceful future in the region.

Studies carried out by the Gaza Community Mental Health Program show a frightening rise in trauma, as children fall victim to night terrors, loss of appetite, insomnia, and symptoms of panic and aggression. Adults are also suffering from panic disorders, depression and psychosomatic disorders as they struggle to cope with the deeply inhuman situation. Former US president Jimmy Carter was right to call the siege "an atrocity, a crime, an abomination."

In the summer of 2007, the Gaza Community Mental Health Program took the initiative to create a humanitarian, non-political campaign aimed at raising international awareness of Gaza's deteriorating life conditions in order to pressure the Israeli government into lifting the devastating siege.

We thought that within a year we would have achieved our aim. We were wrong. The siege continues, and so must the campaign. We are working to bring another boat to Gaza by the end of September. In October, mental health workers and other medical professionals will travel to Palestine for a conference called "Siege and Mental Health  Walls versus Bridges."

Through other "break the siege" solidarity meetings, cultural activities and demonstrations, we hope to nurture non-violent approaches that can peacefully transform the brutal reality of caged lives. The message to end the siege is a message of peace and an appeal for justice.

If you believe in freedom, human dignity and peace, we ask you to support our efforts by making a donation to end the siege. We particularly call for the support of Jewish people, whose history of trauma, discrimination and suffering should guide them to stand up today to help bring an end to the suffering of others.

DFA New Haven: Meeting Recap and Upcoming Events

Dear DFA New Haven,

Thanks for those who came to Wall Street Pizza on Wednesday, I was happy to see our attendance breaking back into double digits!  I hope we are able to continue to build on this momentum by inviting a new speaker every month.  If we can get a dozen + people every month, I think that would be a track record good enough to lure some bigger name speakers such as Richard Blumenthal, Rosa DeLauro, and Phil in the Blank.

Our speaker on Wednesday - Stephanie Farber - gave an excellent account of the Hilltop Brigade -

This group already has an email list of SEVEN HUNDRED people from our district who are willing to travel to adjacent congressional districts to canvass for Jim Himes, Joe Courtney, and Chris Murphy, would you like to join them?

The Sad History of Joe Lieberman

Meanwhile, our intelligence says that since we invaded Iraq, al-Qaida has grown stronger, including in its capacity to strike us at home. It only confirms what we all should know: The war is a debacle. Each day we fail to end it endangers the life of every American, especially the soldiers we have sent and sent again to fight it.

The most important bipartisan movement in a generation is taking shape on Capitol Hill. But ironically, Joe Lieberman isn't part of it. Instead, he joins Bush in attacking the "defeatists." Yes, we've come to that phase of a war when disgraced leaders blame the outcome on those brave enough to oppose them. Sadly, Lieberman shows signs of giving in to the temptation.

Impeachment considered by CT Dems!

Harwinton, CT Democratic Town Chair Myrna Watanabe and former Congressman Jim Maloney plan to introduce the following resolution for discussion at the July 25 meeting of the Democratic State Central Committee.

IMPEACHMENT RESOLUTION FOR CONSIDERATION BY THE CONNECTICUT DEMOCRATIC STATE CENTRAL COMMITTEE 2007

WHEREAS, Section 603 of the Manual and Rules of the U.S. House of Representatives provides for impeachment to be initiated on a motion based on charges transmitted from a state legislature; and,

WHEREAS, President George W. Bush has committed high crimes and misdemeanors as he has repeatedly and intentionally violated the United States Constitution and other laws of the United States, particularly the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, and the Torture Convention, which under Article VI of the Constitution, is a treaty as part of the supreme law of the land?; and

WHEREAS, President George W. Bush has ordered at least thirty times the National Security Agency to intercept and otherwise record international telephone and other signals and communications by American citizens without warrants from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court of Review, duly constituted by Congress in 1978, in violation of constitutional guarantees of due process; and,

WHEREAS, President George W. Bush has admitted that he willfully and repeatedly violated the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and boasted that he would continue to do so, each violation constituting a felony; and,

WHEREAS, President George W. Bush's dereliction of his duty resulted in our country launching an attack on a people and nation that presented no imminent threat of attack, causing the death of more than 3,000 American service personnel as of June 1, 2007, the maiming of thousands more, and the death and injury of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi people, the destruction of their civil society and infrastructure, and the sullying of the honor of the United States of America; and,

NOW, THEREFORE, the Connecticut Democratic State Central Committee submits that his actions and admissions constitute ample grounds for his impeachment, and that the General Assembly of the State of Connecticut has good cause for submitting charges to the U.S. House of Representatives under Section 603 as grounds for President George W. Bush's impeachment.
The Connecticut Democratic State Central Committee further submits that Articles of Impeachment should charge that President George W. Bush has violated his constitutional oath to execute faithfully the office of President, and to the best of his ability, to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.

In all of this, George W. Bush has acted in a manner contrary to his trust as President, subversive of constitutional government, to the great prejudice of the cause of law and justice, and to the manifest injury of the people of the State of Connecticut and of the United States.

WHEREFORE, be it Resolved: President George W. Bush by such conduct, warrants impeachment and trial, removal from office and disqualification to hold and enjoy any offices of honor, trust, or profit under the United States Constitution.

RAMSEY CLARK, CINDY SHEEHAN FEATURED SPEAKERS AT IMPEACH BUSH MEETING IN NYC, SATURDAY, FEB. 17 AT 7:30PM

~ImpeachBush.org Organizes for March 17 Washington DC Protest ~

In the lead up to the March 17, 2007 mass March on the Pentagon, Ramsey Clark and Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, will represent ImpeachBush.org at the Emergency Summit to Impeach Bush for War Crimes. The two-day summit will start at 10:00 am this Saturday at the West Park Presbyterian Church located at 105t W. 86th St. and Amsterdam Ave. ImpeachBush.org is one of several organizations co-sponsoring this event.

Ramsey Clark will be a featured speaker in the evening panel that begins at 7:30 pm. Mr. Clark will be joined by Cindy Sheehan, Debra Sweet of the World Can't Wait, Rev. Lennox Yearwood and others.

Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, renowned civil rights lawyer and co-founder of the Partnership for Civil Justice, will be speaking at the panel that opens the conference at 10:00am this Saturday.

This is a time for dynamic action. The impeachment movement is joining forces with peace groups and a growing number of Iraq war veterans and their families to launch a massive nationwide action plan to end the war and Impeach Bush and Cheney.

ImpeachBush.org is supporting the work of Iraq war veterans, veterans from past wars and the families of soldiers and veterans who are carrying out a national mobilization of these communities for the March 17 Washington D.C. March on the Pentagon.

We encourage ImpeachBush.org members who are veterans or soldiers family members to sign the letter below and circulate it widely to others who might want to sign. This is classic grassroots organizing and mobilizing at its best. Each person can reach another person. It is that simple and it is the way we will succeed. See the letter below and sign up.
