Unemployment rose to 5.7 percent in July; Exxon Mobil reported record profits

August 1, 2008

FANWOOD – Today, the Department of Labor reported job losses for the seventh consecutive month. Employers eliminated 51,000 jobs in the month of July alone, for a total of 463,000 fewer jobs now than in December 2007 [Washington Post, 8/1/08].

The report comes one day after Exxon Mobil reported the highest quarterly profits ever for a corporation, with an income of $11.68 billion for April through June [New York Times, 8/31/08].

“While American unemployment numbers climbed for the seventh straight month, the Bush Administration’s friends in Big Oil reported the highest quarterly profits ever for a corporation,” said Linda Stender, candidate for Congress in New Jersey’s 7th District. “At the same time our families are paying almost $4 a gallon, Big Oil continues to benefit from tax breaks and record profits. As I travel around the 7th District, I hear everyday from families who are hurting, and who are worried about providing a better future for their children and grandchildren.”

“The failed policies of the Bush Administration have left our economy in shambles. Gas is almost $4 a gallon, healthcare costs are skyrocketing, and millions of Americans are in danger of losing their homes. This election offers a real choice between more of the same, or change and a new direction for our country. Instead of tax breaks for Big Oil, we need an energy policy that brings down gas prices and revitalizes our economy, through investments in renewable energy sources and the creation of good, new jobs in green technologies. In Congress, I’ll fight to bring the change New Jersey families so desperately need.”

- Hedge funds and the tax rates on their profits as capital gains

By Phil Specht on Aug 5, 2008 6:07 PM EDT

pushed fund investors to pursue riskier positions through derivitives than they may have otherwise by giving hedge funds control of the decisions one of which was purchases of commodities futures as the dollar weakened due to the Great Heist original tax cut that caused revenue shortfalls and a weaker dollar

so the resulting bad money driving out good is the chief cause of the inflation and the oil companies had a windfall drop in their lap

tax it to give families rebates

....and Exxon manages to 'earn' these profits in spite of a $500 million settlement
of the Valdez case last month...

- It wasn't a settlement

It was a cap on punitive damages awarded to Exxon by the last word in our judicial branch - The Supremes - at least 5 of them.

Oil Companies' policy push is global interdependence not national energy independence.

Two meetings:

1. August 07 keynote Luncheon World Energy Engineering Conference, Exxon Mobil's Energy Advisor for Corporate Planning spoke of meeting the World's needs, free markets, efficient use, technological progress, GLOBAL INTERDEPENDENCE.
Notions of national energy independence were dismissed outright.

2. October 07 Conoco sponsored "Town Hall" Conversation on Energy. Conoco executive says "Energy Independence in short term is not possible." He pushes for people to think of energy security.

Isn't it just big oil's dirty water carriers in government and the political parties, mostly GOP but there are Dems panting to hand over the off shore leases, that are mendaciously connecting off shore wells as an at the pump relief measure.

Have the mainstream media avoid the politcians on this issue for a couple of weeks and bring in their oil company sponsors for an on camera, on record, confession that America's off shore oil will be extracted and sold on the open market to quench the exponentially expanding thirst of China's and India's rising consumerist classes and industrial demands.

could you find someone to post some of your threads at different times of day for you, please?  you're a prolific poster and when you dump four or five threads in a span of twenty minutes or so some folk's threads that have been in the hopper for a while get dumped and I do think others deserve a chance to have their threads seen and recced, too.   don't you think so Charles --- Danny?

oops,  I see that this particular thread is just a cut and paste of someone else's writing - hmmm, so I guess the clogging of the blog might be intentional and not just the product of an overactive mind.

perhaps you could spend some of your time communicating with us here on the blog.  I, for one, would love to have a 'conversation' with you.  it builds community - and after all, isn't that the intent of DFA?

- That is not their intent at all

I perceive their intent as tearing down community as much as possible.  I had no idear there were degrees in cutting and pasting either.  Hope she goes far with it - perhaps kindergarten teacher?
