Looking Back at "Take It Back"
In these times of political uncertainty, where candidates can change positions on issues faster than you can say "news cycle", it's instructive to look back. Four years ago, there was a candidate in the race for President of The United States who left no doubt about where he stood on the issues and most people who frequent this site were excited and energized to be a part of that campaign.
One of those who was also enthused was award-winning filmmaker Heidi Draper, an American living with her family in France. She packed up her camera and came back to the U.S. to chronicle the journey of the Dean for America campaign from beginning to end, leading to the creation of her wonderful documentary "Take It Back: The Movement For Democracy and Howard Dean". Some of you are no doubt familiar with film from its showing at Democracyfest, but I would suggest that everyone who supported the Dean campaign in anyway should have this DVD in their collections, as its message and themes are as relevant today as ever.
Here is the first trailer that has ever been available for "Take It Back". It was put together by myself and fellow editor Anthony Memisovski. I hope you like it, but more importantly, I hope that you will support this wonderful gift that Harriette produced for those of us who still believe in the hope, spirit and vision of our country embodied in the Dean For America campaign.
You can visit the film's website at takeitfbackfilm.com
DemocracyInteractive.com - A Dedication to Dr. Martin Luther King
Linked to groups: Netroots Activism!
Hello:
My name is Darryl Daniels.
Although we honored Dr. Martin Luther King yesterday, his actual birthdate is January 16th, and today I'm proud to announce the launch of our new site DemocracyInteractive.com (formerly DemocracyChat.com). The site, as our tagline conveys, is "a real-time free speech forum." We decided to dedicate the site and our very first frontpage to Dr. King because he exemplified the true power of free speech.
I was born and grew up in Selma, Alabama around the time of the Civil Rights Movement, and now live in Montgomery, Alabama, so Dr. King is very much a part of my life and history. My grandparents, who could not vote without the threat of harassment, job loss or worse, had pictures and paintings of Dr. King around our house like a member of our family. In many ways, he's a member of all our families.
Dr. King possessed the rare conviction to stand for what was right when he had every reason not to do so. For starters, he had 4 little children, his home was firebombed, he was almost fatally stabbed, and too many other incidents to name, but he remained steadfast. Today, we have a man in office who stands for the wrong things, with no consequences, and thinks that's real conviction. Dr. King stood up for what was right despite the consequences. That, more than anything, is what makes him great.
It's not brought out enough, but one of Dr. King's most passionate stands was against the war in Vietnam. I truly believe that if Dr. King were here with us today he be standing against us sending more of our men and women into another bloody quagmire. He would be standing for those held without trial for years and he would be standing against a government that seeks to spy on and deny the rights of its citizens .
So, we dedicate our site to Dr. King and others, before and since, who've had the courage to stand for democracy.
I invite my fellow members of the DFA community to join us at DemocracyInteractive to chat about the issues of the day, and to have some fun. If you haven't already, login and express your free speech today.
Winning In The South
Linked to groups: Netroots Activism!
When Howard Dean formed DFA, he challenged citizens from all across the country to run office, including the South. In Montgomery, Alabama, Anita Kelly answered that call running to become the first female African-American judge in the history of Montgomery County, which was ground zero for bus boycotts, Rosa Parks and the ascendency of a young Martin Luther King.
Running against a powerful Republican incumbent, and the odds, Anita won.
My name is Darryl Daniels, I'm a member of Alabama for Democracy and I worked on Anita Kelly's campaign in a number of roles, including as a advisor. I'm now working with another candidate in this area who is running for office and I need YOUR help.
The new candidate that I'm working with is Greg Pierce. He's a 52-year old, first-time candidate for Congress, who is running in district (the 3rd CD), which should be held by Democrats based on demographics. However, it has been occupied by a Republican for the past decade. We want to change this and there's no better or more crucial time to change the situation.
Here's what you can do to help us. First go to Greg's DFALink campaign site www.dfalink.com/campaign.php?id=... and sign up as a supporter. Ask others on your email list to do the same. It shows DFA that Greg has support and is worthy of their endorsement.
Second, go to Greg's website and make a donation of whatever amount you can (the more the better as we are facing a very well-funded incumbent).
Finally, please call or write DFA and ask them endorse to this Alabama candidate for Congress. Anita Kelly was one of the Dean Dozen selected by DFA in 2004 and we need to keep winning here in the South.
Just a note in closing. I've known Greg since the Dean Campaign, he was one of many Dean supporters here in Alabama. He's commited to the progressive values that made America and will represent us all well in Congress.
As Gov. Dean noted so many times, we need to win in the South. Greg is not just another candidate running with a "D" behind his name, but the kind of person we need to elect
to help us save our country at this critical time.
Thank you for reading. By helping us win here, you're helping us win everywhere.
