Health Care

Written by: David Stablein on May 6, 2008 11:45 AM EDT

"I can lift up my shirt and show you the scars I have on my stomach" was how I began the topic of Health Care with the Webster Democratic Committee in New York's 54th District last week.  I continued by telling them I could show them the scars in my wallet and bank account from having to pay the hospital bills that came with an emergency appendectomy.

In October of 2007 I had to undergo an emergency appendectomy to remove my appendix that decided in a matter of three hours that it had tired of my body and wanted to be removed.  I was scared  even though an appendectomy is the most common surgery there is always a risk involved with surgery, but it wasn't the actual procedure that scared me.  Fresh out of college and ready to tackle the promises of the American dream, I had this surgery that was sure to sidetrack me.  I'm not considering the weeks that it would take me to recover, but the recovery from the lack of health insurance that would take years.

"Get an education, go to college, work hard, pay your taxes, help others, love your country,  stand for liberty, justice, and the American way" is what we're told once we have our social security card.  In response of holding up these values, we look to our government to protect us where needed.  We look to elected officials to tackle the problems facing the American people so when we pay their taxes it will be used wisely.  We look to our elected officials to represent us, and do their job.

I did my part.  I went to college and got an education.  I work hard, I pay my taxes, I help others, and I love my country.  The burden of paying back health bills will prevent me from really taking on that American dream as I try to figure out ways to pay these health bills.  Like I said, fresh out of college, and fresh out of health insurance.  Luckily for me, it was only an appendectomy.  I don't have children.  I'm not a single parent with a sick child.  I can't imagine living under circumstances with children, without proper health care, and one of them gets sick.  I suppose I could look at myself and realize that I'm being selfish for feeling that I got a raw deal on Health Insurance when I don't have to worry about anyone else relying on me.  I can't help but feel we all got a raw deal.

This country needs Universal Health Care, and New York can be the leader in developing a Health Care system that works.  That's why I look to Paloma Capanna, candidate for NYS Senate 54th District, and her plan for Universal New York which is a comprehensive plan to cover the people of New York.  Health Care is just a part of the reorganization New York and the country needs, but it's a great place to start.  It's a great place to start in case another fresh graduate's appendix decides its time to leave.  We need elected officials that will stand up and pave the way for us to achieve the American dream, however we may define it.  We need Paloma Capanna in the NYS Senate to be a voice of change, and strength.  I urge you to visit her website www.capannaforsenate.com to learn more.  With Paloma Capanna in office, I know the scars on my stomach will continue to heal, but with much more ease knowing that there is someone fighting for Health Care in Albany.  It is time for us all to expose the scars we have, and demand the best for our state.

Now consider what would happen if Mexican security forces were pursuing a criminal who had fled into the US and they opened fire across the border, then crossed it, killing a US border guard.

If a US citizen was killed by foreign soldiers within the United States there would be reaction verging on the hysterical.  There would be cries for retribution and demands for punishment of those responsible. Quite right, you will say, if only because international law, in the shape of the Charter of the United Nations, specifies that all signatories shall “refrain from the threat or the use of force against the territorial integrity  . . . of any member or state, or in any manner inconsistent with the purposes of the United Nations.” All perfectly clear: a country that uses force against another without justification that is approved by its international peers is acting illegally.

On  April 23 US troops were involved in a fire-fight in eastern Afghanistan. They alleged that their enemy crossed over the border into Pakistan. They then used artillery to shell Pakistan’s territory.  Not only that but they crossed the border and killed a Pakistani para-military trooper.  The news agency AFP recorded that the incident occurred when soldiers from the ‘coalition’ (read ‘US’, because there were no other foreign troops in that area) and ‘the Afghan army’ (entirely under US control):

So a Pakistani border guard in his own country was killed by foreigners who consider it acceptable – no, not just acceptable: a responsibility,  a duty, a God-given right – to invade the territory of a foreign country and kill its citizens if these citizens are unfortunate enough to be in the way of US bullets, shells or missiles.

There is no law governing Bush America’s barbarity overseas. All the strikes by the US within Pakistan have been blatantly illegal by any reckoning.

Bush and his poisonous bunch of malignant chickenhawk barbarians have shown the world that they respect no laws, care nothing for human beings unless they are Israelis, and trample on human rights with all the vicious contempt of a demented elephant. The next administration will have to cleanse the stables of the filth, but it’s going to be a difficult job.

- People who don't need People

By Huron John on May 6, 2008 6:47 PM EDT

http://www.counterpunch.org/brasch05062008.html

From a pool of about seven billion, those hard-working geniuses at People magazine have managed to find the hundred most beautiful people in the whole wide world. And—get ready for the surprise—almost every one of those beautiful people are rich American celebrities.

For almost two decades, People’s editors believe they have been given the divine right to anoint who they believe to be the most beautiful people on the planet. The ethnocentric celebrity-fawning People editors are so secure in their self-imposed knowledge that they don’t even tell us what criteria they used to make their determinations. Not even an “editor’s note,” common in most magazines.

Teachers, social workers, and medical researchers, no matter how beautiful, didn’t make this year’s cut. But, they shouldn’t worry about it. Neither did Miss America, Miss USA, Miss World, Mr. Universe, or, for that matter, Miss Crustacean, Ocean City, New Jersey’s, salty tribute to hermit crabs, and a spoof of the beauty contest that once inhabited next-door Atlantic City.

People magazine may need people to justify its $254,000 full page advertising rate. But, people, even with insatiable curiosity about celebrities, really don’t need People

- Political Fantasies

By Huron John on May 6, 2008 6:50 PM EDT

http://www.counterpunch.org/mango05062008.html

August 28, 2008.

In a stunning development at the Democratic National Convention, Barack Obama, the party’s candidate for the presidency, named Ron Paul as his running mate. Said Obama:

“Our nation yearns for unity in ending the Iraq War, change in making the government work for the people’s interest and not those of special interests, a fair system of taxation, and an end to the infringement on people’s rights and the encroachment into their private lives by government. With Ron Paul as my running mate, our campaign declares: America, we have heard you, and together we are united in leading the way to restoring our nation’s greatness and its freedoms, without sacrificing its security.”

Asked about his surprising new role as a vice presidential candidate on a Democratic ticket, Paul said:

“It makes sense. I want to end the war, but with McCain leading the Republican Party they won’t do it; and I want to reduce taxation and government spending, which could not happen under Bush, and would not happen under McCain in any meaningful way because the war and the catering to the lobbyists runs up the spending. I felt that the best way to bring the Republican Party, my party, back to its senses and to advance an anti-war low-taxation agenda was to run in a unity ticket with Barack Obama.”

Can you beat that?

September 4, 2008.

In what has to be seen as a Republican response to the Obama-Paul unity ticket that has rocketed the Democrats’ popularity ratings this last week, John McCain, the Republican presidential candidate, announced Hillary Clinton as his running mate. Said McCain:

“America wants an experienced leadership team that includes women’s perspectives. Hillary Rodham Clinton, who began her political career campaigning for Richard Nixon, understands the insights and needs of American women, and how government policy affects their lives. This election is about doing what is right for America, it is not about one party or the other. With Hillary Clinton as my running mate, we have the right team, the right ideas, and the right direction with which to lead this nation into a secure and prosperous future.”

Asked about her surprising new role, Hillary Clinton said:

“I just can’t stop fighting for America, so I am honored to be John McCain’s running mate. He is a patriot who understands the security needs of our country and will safeguard them to the utmost. Coupled with my experience at developing domestic policies, I know that the American people will recognize us as being the type of individuals it really wants to carry forward the nation’s business. For me, it will be an awesome responsibility to be only a heartbeat away from the presidency, but I know I am prepared for the job ahead.”

I'm kinda not too happy with the things Howard has to say these days. He was just on MSNBC spewing out the same old "they're two excellent candidates" and acting like it doesn't matter which one wins when he knows all too well that it does.

I know he is putting on a happy fact for the party but it probably isn't working, at least it isn't for me. He has to know that a large percentage of those new voters, particularly the young ones, signed up because of Obama, not one of another Clinton. He probably also knows that many of those black voters would not vote for Hillary because the only way she can get the nomination is through cheating, lying, pretending and threatening. That wouldn't sit well with them as well as the new young voters.

Yes, it does matter to us Howard and probably to you to. But I understand why you are doing it -- because you have to.

I would vote for Hillary even if she stole the nomination -- she is a sliver better than McCain I guess -- but it would put me and my other half out of the party for good.

and you can bet your fanny that Terry McArsehole wouldn't be as neutral if he was still chairman.  see, that's the first piece of Hillary's plan to be POTUS that fell apart - she didn't get an inside man elected as chairman.

stand strong Howard - I'm sure the pressure from these power players has gone from tough to extreme the past few months and you're holding up extremely well! (in my very biased opinion, anyway!!!)

- Democracy my ass

By Huron John on May 6, 2008 7:12 PM EDT

12 nuns turned away from Indiana polls for lacking photo IDs.

Today, Sister Julie McGuire had to turn away 12 fellow Indiana nuns — all in their 80s or 90s — from a polling place because they lacked a state or federal photo ID, as mandated by the recent Supreme Court decision. AP reports:

“One came down this morning, and she was 98, and she said, ‘I don’t want to go do that,’” Sister McGuire said. Some showed up with outdated passports. None of them drives.

They weren’t given provisional ballots because it would be impossible to get them to a motor vehicle branch and back in the 10-day time frame allotted by the law, Sister McGuire said. “You have to remember that some of these ladies don’t walk well. They’re in wheelchairs or on walkers or electric carts.”

Sister McGuire also underscored the difficulty in obtaining IDs for these women: “We’re going to take from now until November to get them out and get this done. You can’t do this like school kids on a bus. I wish we could.”

By Monica Smith on May 6, 2008 7:31 PM EDT

Don't know what it is about the appendix. Mine decided it wanted out just after college, as well. Fortunately, I had a job with the federal government and Blue Cross covered it.

Remember when Blue Cross covered almost everyone? Sort of like Ma Bell. Do we have better telephone service now that it's no longer a regulated utility? I can't say I really care.
What I do know is that it would have been a real waste if a young man who'd just finished being educated were done in by a burst appendix. We'd all be deprived of the payback we can expect from him. Who loses more when a person dies in his prime--the individual or the community who depended on him? If the latter, then why shouldn't the community insure that he's not lost?
