Passenger in a plane who would you want in the cockpit? Hillary? Obama?

Written by: Rodney Wicks on Feb 29, 2008 2:03 PM EST

OK finally I am able to put into words what I have been pondering as well as what has been annoying me. Annoying in the sense of curiosity, pondering in the sense of a deep and meaningful reflection because the stakes are of a level of a nation. No my intentions are not that of changing the world, I just hope to be heard somewhere in this world.

I am a Black (African) American living in France for the past 25+ years. Due to that number 25+, when I left America, I was Afro, today its African and in between I have simply settled for American. Living abroad has taught me that the color question is really an American phenomenon. Here in Europe it is your country of origin, which makes all the difference, if you are expulsed or politely asked to get your papers in order.

But that is not my reason for writing as mentioned above there are some things that I have pondered and have finally found the words to describe the image which answers my questions concerning this US Presidential campaign.

Here is an image that struck me as the way some and maybe not enough, view this campaign. As far as I see it, this is a remake of the Vietnam crisis? Era? Which conjures up the other Bush, no? The Republican engaged in a war and left, someone else to finish, leaving the economy in shambles. Remember? Or maybe the majority of the Obama supporters were too young to recall and maybe it was not presented, sorry written, that way in your history books. Oh, Vietnam was my draftable age! So are the Democrats a shoe in? Probably, which explains, as well, all of the hype and hoopla surrounding the Democratic nomination campaign. True this is a historical moment not only for the USA but as well for the world.

There are two candidates one having and/or claims to have more political experience, having lived the White House experience for 8 years. While the other claims to have the oratorical edge, putting forth his dreams, as his own and causing others to dream along with him.

(Click Read More for the rest of this post)

First of all why can’t Hillary have a dream? Is it because she is a woman or because she is white or BOTH? Others have had DREAMS in the past so why can’t she? Women are the largest oppressed minority throughout the world, as well as its’ history including Africa and its’ history, no?

From what I have heard and read everyone is discounting her White House experience as just being the wife of the US President but that is experience in itself.

Imagine you are traveling by plane. On most flights your flight crew consists of the pilot, co-pilot, navigator (cockpit crew) + the stewards and stewardesses (cabin crew). Now imagine there is an attempted highjacking and the pilot and copilot are killed, as well as the highjacker. Now whom would you want to land the plane? The navigator or the coffee, tea, or me, person with the contagious smile?

In closing I hope this scenario plays out:

Hillary: President/Obama: Vice-President (experience gained) 2008-2012

Obama: President/African-American Woman: Vice-President (experience gained) 2013-2021

African-American Woman: President/Non-African Person (experience gained) 2022-2028

The pen, which writes history, has just changed hands (experience gained), no?

no offense Rodney but both of these persons are highly qualified so the person I want landing the plane is the one who has shown calm demeanor so the control tower can talk the plane down and that is Obama

Clinton vs Obama: The Fighter

Posted February 29, 2008 | 03:11 PM (EST)

...

Senator Hillary Clinton is one tough woman. She's a fighter, as she said repeatedly last night. Knock her off her feet, she'll be right back up, fighting still. With any and all weapons at her disposal.

Okay, I believe her. It's the pugilism itself that does not sit well with me. We have barely survived seven years -- and nearly one more to go! -- with a pugilist president, a guy who evidently prides himself on being the scrappy in-fighter, the aggressive responder to everything even remotely perceived as a threat. And we know where his "leadership" took us.

...

What I see in Obama, however, is a more Eastern, martial arts kind of fighter, one who uses force as the very last resort and, when he does, is skilled in turning his opponent's attack against him. He follows the way of the peaceful warrior, walking softly, always prepared, but never aggressive or deliberately provocative. As was the case last night, he deals with attacks calmly, responding with thoughtfully proportionate effort, and seeking common ground rather than opposition.

I believe that this is the kind of fighter we need, not the scrappy one, preemptively aggressive, fearful of losing or of seeming weak. There are those who mistake Obama's calm exterior for passivity or timidity. I think they're wrong. I think the man carries his strength with quiet self-assurance and modesty. I don't see fear. I see an understanding of what, in these new tumultuous times, might work a whole lot better than the disastrously unsuccessful tactics of the past.

Go Chet.

I am having a chance to visit with an undecided super delegate myself Sat.

Yes, Carter is a superdelegate. I have not heard that he has endorsed anyone. If he had, I'm betting it would have been pretty well-publicized.

From Newsweek - 'A Day of Reckoning'

"A visitor from another country recently paid a call on the Clinton campaign headquarters in Ballston, Va., a place just over the bridge from Washington but light years away. He imagined he would be present at a moment of great triumph. Instead he found a campaign on the verge of imploding. Phone bank tables were unmanned. Bins full of mail sent over from the Senate sat unattended. A lot of young women, fanatical Hillary fans all, rushed about, seemingly unclear about what they were supposed to be doing. Other aides sat in front of computer screens, gloomily reading coverage of the campaign. Howard Wolfson and Phil Singer, the campaign's communications team, weren't speaking with anybody else, just doing their own thing, whatever that might have been. In short, it was not a happy family"...

Karen, Pat in Colorado posted the email here, I posted my reply on one I received traveling through Ohio. I don't have a link and I don't care to spend the time looking to see a website that has the original email. We know it's out there.

This is my response, to the email circulated, that email is under my remarks.

Indeed people need to get facts for themself. What surprises me is that
such an email of an Obama supporter would be forwarded without facts first
being verified with their own links provided.

These are the kind of emails Obama Campaign complains of the Republicans
sending out with false information about him.

According to Thomas records...without me going in to each Bill.

All Bills just even containing Obama's name, whether it is a Referenced
Bill, Written Bill, Sponsored Or Cosponsoring another's Bill, his name
appears on it. The total Bills of which his name just appears is only 594
for the entire time he has been in the US Senate, since 2005. Obviously
that doesn't even come close to 1096 claimed.
570 Bills from multiple Congresses ranked by relevance on "Obama ".
570 bills containing your phrase exactly as entered.

Mrs. Clinton, within just the same time period, has a minimum 902 Bills.
Not the 820 for her entire career the email claimed. And not her entire
term in the Senate. (to be fair)
1939 Bills from multiple Congresses ranked by relevance on "Mrs+Clinton ".
902 bills containing your phrase exactly as entered.
0 bills containing all your search words near each other in any
order.
7 bills containing all your search words but not near each other.
1030 bills containing one or more of your search words.

Hillary has 100 Bills this year alone.

Linda

This was sent to us, have you read this?
Let's take a closer look at who's really qualified and or who's
really working for the good of
all of us in the Senate. Obama or Clinton.
Records of these two candidates should be scrutinized in order to make
an informed decision.
Senator Clinton, who has served only one full term - 6 yrs. - and
another year campaigning,
has managed to author and pass into law - 20 - twenty pieces of
legislation in her first six years.
These bills can be found on the website of the Library of Congress
www.thomas.loc.gov,
but to save you trouble, I'll post them here for you.
1. Establish the Kate Mullany National Historic Site.
2. Support the goals and ideals of Better Hearing and Speech Month.
3. Recognize the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
4. Name courthouse after Thurgood Marshall.
5. Name courthouse after James L. Watson.
6. Name post office after Jonn A. O'Shea.
7. Designate Aug. 7, 2003, as National Purple Heart Recognition
Day.
8. Support the goals and ideals of National Purple Heart
Recognition Day.
9. Honor the life and legacy of Alexander Hamilton on the
bicentennial of his death.
10. Congratulate the Syracuse Univ. Orange Men's Lacrosse Team on
winning the championship.
11. Congratulate the Le Moyne College Dolphins Men's Lacrosse Team
on winning the championship.
12. Establish the 225th Anniversary of the American Revolution
Commemorative Program.
13. Name post office after Sergeant Riayan A. Tejeda.
14. Honor Shirley Chisholm for her service to the nation and
express condolences on her death.
15. Honor John J. Downing, Brian Fahey, and Harry Ford,
firefighters who lost their lives on duty.
Only five of Clinton 's bills are, more substantive. 16. Extend
period of unemployment assistance
to victims of 9/11.
17. Pay for city projects in response to 9/11 18. Assist landmine
victims in other countries.
19. Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care.
20. Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as
protected in the
wilderness preservation system.
There you have it, the fact's straight from the Senate Record.
Now, I would post those of Obama's, but the list is too
substantive, so I'll mainly categorize.
During the first - 8 - eight years of his elected service he
sponsored over 820 bills. He introduced
233 regarding healthcare reform,
125 on poverty and public assistance,
112 crime fighting bills,
97 economic bills,
60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
21 ethics reform bills,
15 gun control,
6 veterans affairs and many others.
His first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and
co-sponsored another 427.
These included **the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006
- became law,
**The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation
and Conventional Weapons
Threat Reduction Act, - became law,
**The Comprehensive Immigra tion Reform Act,
passed the Senate,
**The 2007 Government Ethics Bill, - became
law,
**The Protection Against Excessive Executive
Compensation Bill, In committee,
and many more.
In all, since entering the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written
890 bills and
co-sponsored another 1096.
An impressive record, for someone who supposedly has no record according
to some who
would prefer that this comparison not be made public.
He's not just a talker.
He's a doer.
It's impressive

Taxing

Barack Obama's campaign is pushing Hillary Clinton anew to release her tax returns and White House schedules. During Tuesday's Dem debate she vowed to make the tax returns public with a caveat: "I will release my tax returns. I have consistently said that. I will do it as others have done it upon becoming the nominee or even earlier, Tim. I have been as open as I can be. The public has 20 years of records for me."

As for those scheds from her time as first lady, well, Bill Clinton is in possession of them. Here's what HRC had to say Tuesday about when he would release them: "I’ve urged that the process be as quick as possible. It is a cumbersome process set up by law."

And the related memo today from Team Obama:

To: Interested Parties
From: Obama Campaign
RE: Why Won’t Hillary Clinton Release Her Tax Returns?
DA: 2/29/08

During a recent MSNBC debate, Senator Clinton was asked if she would release her tax returns. She answered, “Well, I will do it as others have done it, upon becoming the nominee or even earlier.” But the very next day, her campaign backtracked, saying, “As is customary, as the Democratic nominee Sen. Clinton will release her tax information in April at tax time.”

But waiting until April is not customary. In the 2004 Democratic primary, Governor Dean, Rep. Kucinich, Senator Lieberman, and Senator Edwards released their tax returns in April of 2003 – a full year earlier in the primary process. Senator Kerry released his tax returns in December of 2003, and General Clark released his tax returns in January of 2004.

Senator Clinton’s refusal to make this very basic disclosure has raised a number of eyebrows among advocates for increased transparency. As her top Ohio supporter Governor Ted Strickland said in his 2006 campaign, if a candidate is not releasing his or her “tax return, what is he hiding? We should question what’s going on.”

Here's a KOS diary by Grassroots Mom who has studied the legislation of Clinton and Obama and says Obama is better. Don't be misled by the title of the diary.

http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/2...

"I went to the Library of Congress Website. The FACTS of what each did in the Senate last year sure surprised me. I'm sure they will surprise you, too. Whether you love or hate Hillary, you will be surprised. Whether you think Obama is the second coming of JFK or an inexperienced lightweight, you will surprised. Go check out the Library of Congress Website. After spending some time there, it will be clear that there is really only one candidate would is ready to be the next president, even better than Gore. If you don't want to spend an hour or two doing research, then I'll tell you what I discovered on the jump."

Fmr. Sen. George Mitchell lives in NYC--get him out of ME's column, too.

Hopefully, FLA's delegates won't be seated, anyways.  Curtis already went w/Billary (along w/Gov. Baldacci), which only pissed people off to vote for Obama during caucus.

I made him get the hell out of our registration line at caucus (clogging it up, so that folks couldn't register in time); and he "spoke" for her, which he was forewarned NOT to do by our Chair.

His aide "apologized" the following week.  Idiot.

Good on Marianne Stevens (she's running again for DNC state rep., and knows she'd never be elected)!

Waiting on Sam Spencer, Michaud, & Allen.

Am sure they'll go w/Obama-prolly after Tues.

If I am correct, Clinton and McCain made fun of Obama for supporting actions similar to the one below.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Did We Get Zawahiri?

It’s just a rumor now, so don’t start popping champagne corks, but Bill Roggio has the details: Egyptian al Qaeda leader reported killed in South Waziristan airstrike.

Pakistani and US intelligence are attempting to sort out the names of the al Qaeda and Taliban operatives killed in yesterday’s airstrike in Azam Warzak, South Waziristan. Initial reports indicated Arabs and fighters from Central Asia were killed in the operation. One report indicates an “al Qaeda fugitive from Egypt” was among those killed, sparking rumors that Ayman al Zawahiri was the target of the strike.

South Waziristan Taliban commander Mullah Nazir, who is often characterized as a “pro-government” Taliban leader, appears to be the center of the storm. “Sources said that the militants belonged to the Abu Hamza group whose leader was said to be a follower of local militant commander Maulvi Nazir,” Dawn reported. The attack occurred at the home of Shero Wazir, a follower of Nazir “who had rented it out to an Arab.”

I expect that most people are not familiar with the role the Library of Congress plays, much less that it's electronic indexing system is called "THOMAS'

In any event, the correct address for the LoC portal is

http://thomas.loc.gov/

LOC stands for Library of Congress.  The LOC has every bill and every speech.

However, you have to know what you are looking for.

Raw counts of words or phrases are sort of useless.   Like Google telling

What they want is a link to the original source of the information that was in the email. If the email did not contain a source, whatever was in the email is something that many here won't take for granted, especially if it is in the form of an attack on a candidate.

Not only that, but if you post something here as though it were a fact, it should be plainly noted at the very beginning that the information was from an email without a source.

I did not read your original comment that is being questioned so I  have no comment on its contents myself.

Hope that helps.

an empty HQ's in Washington might mean they are all working in Ohio

Ohio has a border with PA and the Ohio result will influence voters there.

time to throw everything you have into it in Ohio

Ohio would be a huge win if Clinton pulls it off and don't think they aren't trying

Just want to note for the record that I don't ride on Jet planes.

But, I was really impressed by Nevil Shute's novel, "'Round the Bend"

about an airplane mechanic in the far East who trains the local in

precise maintenance procedures.   We apparently could use

more of that.  Not too long ago an F 15 came apart in mid-air and the

other day one of those billion dollar stealth babies caught fire shortly

after leaving the runway and crashed on Guam.  Apparently that was

not a big loss since they only had enough money to fix the wiring on

Not a chance...her ads in TX are targeted towards women w/children, natch.

Rovian fearmongering.

Both Big Dog & Hillary rose to the top, at the expense of millions of low income women and their children (ala "ending welfare as we know it")--esp. women of color.

In TX, no less. Spare me.

Those women don't have the opportunity to become "misty-eyed" at the least little triviality in life. Parenting is no longer considered to be a "countable work activity" for women who depend upon TANF.

Not concerned about VT going for Clinton...it's TX.

 Hillary's Alamo.

How many folks in your DFA group, Jessica?

All VT for Obama info here

They aren't terribly educated down there in TX (per capita); but are voting early, so that's great.

Of course, Billary's attempting to sue/change rules midstream w/the state party.

 Slimebag.

Caucuses are "insignificant," let's not forget?

 *cough*

Food price inflation is going to be over 20% just from the weak dollar alone, add in energy costs to food prices, last years bad weather, and the current acreage decision battle of planting corn for an ethanol plant, anyway you cut it you need to budget more for groceries.

but in general much of it is processing packaging and transportation costs so just watch the price of a barrel of oil

food has inelastic demand so higher prices are hard to stop from diminished demand

Monica, if, as you say, Al Queda is a CIA creation, why are BO and HC and so many others talking like it's a real threat?  Other than the obvious reason which is fear-mongering.  Doesn't this also make our 2 cands a bit disingenuous?  After all, if there's nothing to fear, what reason do we have to stay in the ME, protect Israel and all that other jazz?

Annilow, great link!  Thank you.  Maybe HC has trouble getting her bills thru for these reasons:

1.  She's a woman and congress is misogynistic.  Perhaps her record could be compared to Boxer's.

2.  People don't like her, even tho her bills are good.

3.  ?

Could you post a link to articles instead of copying and pasting the whole thing?  Thanks.

It is very important that you post a link instead of copying and pasting the whole article as it appears you are pasting copyrighted material.  Thanks.

Danny

The simplest solution is to always use an excerpt and a link, never content in its entirety. That will pretty much always constitute fair use, and will always be appreciated by the content creator.

It's about copyrights and consideration of others, Linda.

Please get with it.

Phil, please explain that CIA thing.  I must have missed a step. Are you suggesting the CIA is so good that it's confounding most of the people all of the time?  :-)  Including our critters?

I wouldn't believe that.  I remember Pelosi saying, "You don't know the half of it."  She was speaking to us from a mic.

But ya never know.....

Pakistani and US intelligence are attempting to sort out the names of the al Qaeda and Taliban operatives killed in yesterday’s airstrike in Azam Warzak,

Based on past experiences, it's just as likely they bombed a wedding party.

There are two candidates one having and/or claims to have more political experience, having lived the White House experience for 8 years. While the other claims to have the oratorical edge, putting forth his dreams, as his own and causing others to dream along with him.

So, if a "woman of light love" sleeps with a physicist, we should put her in charge of the NRC? Not in my book. However, the ability to lead, to inspire, to gather expertise (which Hillary is sadly lacking, clearly), is a thing of its own. And something VERY valuable at this point in our history, where we all all going to be called on for big sacrifices just to get ourselves out of this hole the Bushies have dug us. . . .

In my view: Hillary just doesn't have the Moxie. Just the chutzpah to try and ride her spouse's coat tails. . . .
