Political Compass Test
I literally StumbleUpon'd The Political Compass, a website that looks to go beyond the traditional left-right political division. They offer a test that breaks down where you stand and compares you to current and past world leaders. (My results are below)
"If we recognise that this is essentially an economic line it's fine, as far as it goes. We can show, for example, Stalin, Mao Tse Tung and Pol Pot, with their commitment to a totally controlled economy, on the hard left. Socialists like Mahatma Gandhi and Robert Mugabe would occupy a less extreme leftist position. Margaret Thatcher would be well over to the right, but further right still would be someone like that ultimate free marketeer, General Pinochet.
That deals with economics, but the social dimension is also important in politics. That's the one that the mere left-right scale doesn't adequately address. So we've added one, ranging in positions from extreme authoritarian to extreme libertarian.
(Click Read More for the rest of this post)
Both an economic dimension and a social dimension are important factors for a proper political analysis. By adding the social dimension you can show that Stalin was an authoritarian leftist (ie the state is more important than the individual) and that Gandhi, believing in the supreme value of each individual, is a liberal leftist. While the former involves state-imposed arbitary collectivism in the extreme top left, on the extreme bottom left is voluntary collectivism at regional level, with no state involved. Hundreds of such anarchist communities exisited in Spain during the civil war period.
You can also put Pinochet, who was prepared to sanction mass killing for the sake of the free market, on the far right as well as in a hardcore authoritarian position. On the non-socialist side you can distinguish someone like Milton Friedman, who is anti-state for fiscal rather than social reasons, from Hitler, who wanted to make the state stronger, even if he wiped out half of humanity in the process.
The chart also makes clear that, despite popular perceptions, the opposite of fascism is not communism but anarchism (ie liberal socialism), and that the opposite of communism ( i.e. an entirely state-planned economy) is neo-liberalism (i.e. extreme deregulated economy)"

Here are my results:
Economic Left/Right: -5.25
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.33

Thanks to mainefem and rae for their stalwart support for Nancy Skinner as this year's Grassroots All-Star.
Join the movement. You, too, can be proud of a vote you cast. It seems like it's been so long since we could say that.
Dan Abrams = sloppy journalism. He just awarded Obama a bronze loser medal for playing the rap music at his rally. Dan didn't get the memo that it never happened and is relying on Rupert Murdoch's word. tsk tsk.
Mike wrote "Howard.............time to throw water on this blog.........the intelect level is borderline neanderthal."
And the spelling on it is horrifying.
mary wrote "Dan Abrams = sloppy journalism. He just awarded Obama a bronze loser medal for playing the rap music at his rally."
What a twerp.
I took that test a while back and was the Dalai Lama.
But it must not know what it's talking about because I have a short neck, I'm not wooley, and I don't live in the Andes.
Howdy all :-)
Thankful, you're alive!
Alive and well :-) Returned to MA Wed. night and finally got the pc up and running.
Thankful! How was your holiday?
::waving: Hey mary, Susan, Sitka, et.al.
Holidays were great! hope yours were as well. Not much snow while I was in Chicago, but got a foot of snow here last night/this morning :-)

Hey Thankful. Your est clock needs some tweeking.

I'm like half way through this sensitive Political Compass Test....
Kucinich won his case to be included in the debate in Nv tomorrow night. But like Keith said MSNBC will be appealing.
According to the Kucinich camp they expect MSNBC, GE, NBC and a whole alphabet soup of corporations to try to put a strain on his limited resources. so, we'll see what we will see.
The positive thing is that the judge seems to be pretty firm in saying that if Dennis is not included, he will shut down the debate!!!
T2T4DEAn, how was the snow in the Blackstone Valley?
THANKFUL!!!
Yay welcome back sweetie :)
I voted for Nancy Skinner, Mary Jo in Ohio and Chellie -I trust my bloggie friends. Well, most of 'em LOL
10:48 pm est
LOL Paine - oops, I entered the time on the monitor but my pc thinks it's in Chitown. Mebbe see ya for lunch tomorrow, what's a good time?
{{{Denise}}} It's great to be back.
Happy belated December birthdays to DianeB in FL, Jennifer in Boston, Holly J, Theresa in PA, and Karen in MI.
Happy belated January birthdays to Renee, NMMomforDean (aka Tigermom), Catreona, and Nordy.
Did anyone freeze any cake?

They want a race war between Clinton and Obama with Edwards egging them both on. But they know Kucinich will call them on it and pull back the curtain for all to see the Wizard of Russert pulling the levers.
Lunch/dinner ... what's in a name? Tomorrow is good, but it's difficult to say exactly what time. maybe 3:30 or 4:30 or 5-5:30 ? BTW, those would be accurate eastern standard times.
Sitka.......
lol, yes, but I think they want him gone for the reason that they just want him gone. Like Howard. They interfere with the corporate plan.

:-D Well, I'll roadpop over that way at some time or other then and see ya if the est is right. Just saw your question about the snow... about a foot. I had to go out to move the car for the plow guy but didn't head anywhere else today so can't say about the area overall.
Mmmm, cake. German chocolate doesn't freeze well... but no worries, I always eat the whole thing.
♥ puddle ♥
Pingree, Seals, and Kilroy my choices all recommended by people who I trust although Ed Fallon would make a progressive improvement over Leonard Boswell, Howard got it right supporting Leonard when he did, and Boswell is a good man (even if he does support Clinton ), your kind of man paine, he backs the war so got a challenge by a well qualified progressive
Howdy Karen :-)
sheesh, this is hard to read and keep up w/ with all the comments jumping around. worse than ever.

Michigan, Vote for Dennis!
_____________________
I don't know if anyone has talked about this or not, but today Randi Rhodes on Air America was begging Obama and Edwards voters to vote for Kucinich in Michican tomorrow. I think it's tomorrow.
Sounds like a great idea to me.
(write-in votes for Obama and Edwards will not be counted).
I think they want him gone for the reason that they just want him gone. Like Howard. They interfere with the corporate plan.
That would pretty much sink the theory that corporations, including NBC, are terrified of Edwards.
I took the test again and this time I'm even more left/libertarian than I was before -- as far on the lower left as it gets (-9,-9)
stop with the smears already
I only described what's been going on for days -- and which Dan abrahms covered in detail on his program. Where have you been?

stop with the smears already
Wasn't it just yesterday you smeared me by claiming I don't like Edwards because he's a white southern male -- and I asked you to back up your smear -- which you never did?
Now you think you can just turn the charge on me without any basis in fact yet again. I'd like to think you're better than that, but you're not leaving me much wiggle room there, fella.
Clayborn describes the race/gender thing that so many Dems are up in the air about as a
campaign misstep / mistake, which needs to be ...
"we need to get past this, so that we can get at what ails us."
Charlie Rose and Clayborn describe all three as agents of change.
is it really you thankful? seems like you have been more of a ghost floating through walls and appearing and disappearing here lately
a little of your kindness might be just what we need

Seashell thanks for the good news about Barenboim. Now if he would not go to war with the singers when he conducts an opera.
The American Experience was very good tonight -- about the JFK assassination. Their conclusion is that Oswald did it -- he had the means and the motive. For the first time I can see that point of view altho all those other points of view are persuasive too. They always make Nixon to look like such a diabolical character when they show film of him.
I ought to go to bed but the bag monster got me this afternoon and I'm not sleepy. Oh well, I'll try anyway.
Nitie.
despite Iowa leaving race out of it, you knew it would come up, and this has been an illuminating peak at the Clinton campaign, backing out of a mis-step
42. It's really me :-)
Kindness IS free!
Whatsa bag monster?
a little of your kindness might be just what we need
you don't even recognize your own prejudice sitka, but there it is
Apparently, kindness unlike charity, doesn't start at home.
If you're unaware that Edwards has already chimed in on the Hillary/Obama race war (invented by the media), you should pay closer attention.
That's why I said they don't want Kucinich there to gum up the drama they've ginned up.
It also shows a certain shallowness -- or perhaps desperation -- on your part to claim I'm prejudiced against Edwards because he a southern white male when what I have clearly demonstrated for all who are willing to see that what I'm prejudiced against is his pro-Bush Senate record.
backing out of a mis-step

Is a good, healthy move. 'least it is according to Sen Clayborn, and I agree.
despite Iowa leaving race out of it, you knew it would come up
Frankly, I never expected you to use it as a means of attacking me personally.

Fairly middle of the road on economics and pretty libertarian on social issues
Is it like those Fandango characters in da movies?
Or maybe something John and Yoko dressed up as for Halloween? :)
::waving:: Annilow :-) sweet ones
I heard some race/gender comments in Chicagoland... something to still get past despite the dream. One big surprise was a friend whom I think of as fairly right-wing that said given all the candidates he'd vote for Obama!
minus 3.8 minus 6.9 libertarian streak here
cold enough for you Kevin?
I went to five layers today for the first time moving hay with the skid steer.

Phil,
Plenty cold here, the breeze out today wasn't all that pleasant either.
Are the county convention committees meeting next Monday along with the central committee?

That good old Iowa democracy! First caucus night, then the county conventions, then the disrtict conventions, then the state convention. By the time the national delegates are chosen, the people who turned out for caucus night have been removed from the process three times over!
Byzantium had nothing over on Iowa politicians.
It could be the bog monster...bwahhhahhaha

Paine that's brilliant!
Bravo
The bite was back in Chicago today I'll bet Obama is glad to be shuttling tbetween Las Vegas and South Carolina
The Giants will wish Lambeau was in Miami
Phil,
We have someone new to the party from my precinct who wanted to serve on the platform committee. She seemed like she should be a good addition to the committee.
I will be on the rules committee again, I should dig out the rules from the last couple of conventions to take along to the meeting.
ROFL. Bravo.

I'm taking that test...and San Francisco is on Antiques Roadshow. Multi-tasking at its best.

Kevin
I'm an Obama delegate (holding a spot for my Alternate son) but am serving on no committees for the county so I can concentrate on the District Platform which is a job in itself, but I plan on coming to the meeting to help jean marie.
I gotta get some sleep, so see ya tomorrow Thankful, and night to all you monsters.

Not bad :)
Sitka,
Someone who attends a caucus for the first time can end up being a delegate to the national convention. In fact, four years ago a delegate for Howard Dean from my district was such a person. And she has really gotten involved, she is now the youngest woman ever elected to the Iowa House of Represenatives.
In states with primaries, who decides the national delegates?
but the allocation has been set and the only way a candidate can gain delegates is if another gives them up
Thankful-
Actually, I've blogged off and on (mostly off) since this blog was first fired up. But mostly I lurk.....
43. btw, I'm chatting w/ puddle ~ she tried to post that pink is a lovely color but her connection dropped. She sends you hugs :-)
Thankful I would have thought if you were going to move a thousand miles you might have leaned southward a bit, I know after today out in the wind I would. even the Packers will be shivering high forecast in the teens, the guys with the letters painted on their chests will need anti-freeze(which I am sure they will have in the hip flask)
Kevin, is that Elisha? Oops, sorry to not recognize ya :-)
I'd say we elected our Dean delegate in the most democratic of processes Kevin. I'd put Iowa's rules up against anyones.

I love living in the mountains. The night sky is full of wonderment.

I took a similar type survey when I was in my early-20's but it was about career choices. It said I should be a hospital administrator. At the time I was ballet dancer. A little later on I in went into commercial banking and stay there for over 11 years. Then one day my hubby and I just moved far away from the city of illusions so I could be with the real stars.
Thankful,
Yep, that would be Elisha. Great person and is a good legislator too.
No reason to recognixe me, like I said I mostly lurked and would occasionally throw a comment in every once in a while.
Phil, I'd be more southerly if New England was there...
nite all
the outcome of our delegate process last time was representative of the District and had Howard stayed in he would have had every delegate he was allocated on caucus night
I'd put Iowa's rules up against anyones.
You vote. It's counted. The winner gets the most. That's all the rules democracy needs. The more rules there are, the more party insiders can manipulate them to avantage.
I can see why politicians and party insiders who enjoy the game of politics like it that way. But why an ordinary voter would want rules, layers, and delegates between their vote and the nominee (or the electoral college between their vote and the presidency) can only be explained by ignorance and apathy.
Nite Phil. Nite all.
♥'s to all

I took this test, or one similar to it, several years ago. Move over, Annilow and Dalai Lama! :-)
We certainly have a lot of RW authoritarians in power, don't we? Brrrrrrr.......

He would have gotten a lot votes in California too if he had stayed in the race. We had a great turn out for delegate selection caucuses but on primary day most folks had already moved onto another candidate but we did have a small core group of folks who voted for the Governor. We're the DFAers who stayed together and formed our local groups and state group. We're still around today and really worked hard to help the Governor become the next DNC Chair. We want our party back. We got involded in our local and state party too. Our state party is different today because of our participation. Some are happy about it and some are not. Change for some can be difficult.
Sitka,
So, if I'm understanding you correctly, you would do away with conventions and have a primary where who ever got the most votes became the nominee? Would you still have conventions for making the party platform?
So, if I'm understanding you correctly, you would do away with conventions and have a primary where who ever got the most votes became the nominee?
Yes. And for those who want the appearance of a solid majority, there could be IRV.
Would you still have conventions for making the party platform?
Sure. People can go party for a few days and vote on a platform written by the party propagandists which won't be governed upon anyway. Speeches can be made where up and coming talents (like Clinton and Obama) are showcased. The nominee can make a big defining speech and pick a VP (unless the people want to choose that too).
G'night all. Morning and a 2+ hour drive await me in a few hours.
Just so you know ... a new thread is flapping in the breeze.
