PA-03: Make Me a Grassroots All-Star!

Written by: Mike W on Jan 15, 2008 2:58 PM EST

Linked to groups: PA for Democracy

I’m a proud Progressive, and I’ve run this campaign for Congress without pulling any punches.  I’m the only candidate in Pennsylvania’s 3rd District absolutely committed to supporting Universal Health Care for every American.  I’ve been vocal in my opposition to triangulating and capitulating on critical legislation, and to the weak behavior of our majority.  I’ve called for a withdrawal from Iraq, reforming our education system, creating a new energy policy, and restoring our Constitution.

I’ve run to be a leader the people of the Third District can be proud to vote for.  But now, I want everyone in America to vote for me.

My name is Mike Waltner, a member of Democracy for America, and I’m running for Grassroots All-Star.

I know you only have three votes you can use, and it’s a big request that you share one of them with me when we have so many incredible candidates in dozens of races.

Unlike the folks I’m running against for the Third District nomination, I’m basing my candidacy on the notion that a truly grassroots campaign can still win if it remains true to its ideals.  I’m not willing to change my positions on critical issues like the war and health care to score a few points.  I’d rather work to convince the voters that we need health care for all Americans, and that we need to bring our troops home from Iraq as soon as possible.  I don’t believe we can afford to surrender on these moral imperatives.

Our candidates can’t bring change if we don’t provide the voters real alternatives to the right-wing agenda.  I think 2008 will be an election unlike any we’ve ever seen before, and the voters need an alternative to yet another term of Republican regression, recession and repression.  I think they deserve a choice between the ineffective and cold right-wing agenda supported by Rep. Phil English, and real Progressive values like I have always supported.

Give the people of the Third District a real choice in this election, and I’m certain they’ll make the right one.

From the day I declared my candidacy until the day—almost a year from now—when I am sworn in to Congress, I will be putting my faith in the power of the people to create a better life for themselves, and a better future for those who follow us.  And once I get to Congress, I will work to restore that faith in others.

Please help me bring real faith—faith in our agenda for progress and in our collective power to enact it—back to Washington.

Thanks,

Mike Waltner

Candidate for Congress, PA-03

WASHINGTON - Undersized gusset plates in the Interstate 35-W bridge in Minneapolis were “the critical factor” in the bridge collapse last year that killed 13 people and injured 100, the National Transportation Safety Board said Tuesday.

Chairman Mark Rosenker said the plates, which connected steel beams, were roughly half the thickness they should have been because of a design error. Investigators found 16 fractured gusset plates from the bridge’s center span, he said.

“It is the undersizing of the design which we believe is the critical factor here. It is the critical factor that began the process of this collapse. That’s what failed,” Rosenker said

The Minneapolis bridge was a steel-deck truss bridge that opened in 1967. Rosenker said it wasn’t clear how the design flaw made it into the bridge because investigators couldn’t find the design calculations.

Once they made it into the completed bridge, he said, there was little chance they would be noticed by inspectors.

Well I guess it was not Bush's fault after all, despite all you blogging to the contrary.  Another lesson in getting the facts first and assigning blame only then.  When they find the engineer from 1967 you can point the finger at him at a nursing home near you.

bubba is drooling..so many interns, so little time.
yep, we need him prowling the halls again.

Now that you're a Democrat or whatever, please leave that kind of talk to the Republicans.

Woodward would call that a non-denial denial.  All my hard core Dem friends are dreading the thought of him back in action in the lime light.  If he was a guy you knew at work and got caught in the back room with the secretary would you hang out with him thereafter.  Would you think he was little odd.  That maybe his impulse control was lacking.  That embarrassing his wife and daughter that way would make you flinch.  Would your wife let you go out for a beer with him or would she prohibit it.  Telling answers when you think about it.

This is good for Democrats as this looks like it could really go to the convention. Maybe Fred can Rally in SC and Rudy in FL then everyone will have won 1 primary before Super Tuesday.

Just a quick hello again,

Puddle, thank you for the websites.  I have skimmed them and bookmarked them. I appreciate your clearing up my muddle, you also, Thankful.  You are all a presence here, much loved.

And Annilow, thanks for the information.  It's good to know that I'm not totally off the beam in my assertions. I don think race is not only inaccurate but also totally irrelevant.

We'll watch the debates tonight. I really want to see how the candidates interact.  There's a whole bunch of knowledge that can be discerned in tone of voice, word choice, nonverbal behavior.

So, off again. Thanks once more.

This is from MyDD.com

Senior [McCain] Adviser Steve Schmidt strolled back into the press section of their charter plane en route from Traverse City to Yspilanti to start framing potential results.

"Regardless of what happens here, we feel very good about South Carolina," Schmidt said.

Michigan, Schmidt said repeatedly, amounts to a home game for Romney.

"I think he ran a favorite state candidacy -- we'll see if it works."

Predictably, Schmidt said the stakes were enormous for Romney here.

Regarding his own candidate, Schmidt said it wouldn't have a lot of impact either way.

"I think that if we win in Michigan, we get a little bit of a bump and I think that if we lose, we take, maybe, a quarter step back, but i don't think it's a big deal any way," Schmidt argued.

Assuming McCain does lose, as I think he will, that will be two primaries in a row where the momentum garnered from a prior win has dissipated in mere days, perhaps a sort of citizens' revolt against the tendency of the media to coronate a winner? At a more local level, it will also speak to the success of Sen. Levin and Gov. Granholm to inject the economy into the presidential debate through their moving the Michigan primary up; in fact, it may end up having singlehandedly derailed the candidacy of the strongest candidate the Republicans have, one for whom the economy is an admitted weakness.

I really like this candidate, a lot. It was difficult for me to choose only three. But I'm going send him a contribution and ask my hubby to choose him as one of his top three. He wrote to me and hubby over the holidays asking for our support. Great guy. He wrote back and answered all of my questions.

btw, He used the DFA-Link to contact us. It's a great tool. Folks should use it more.

Is JE really running 2nd in all those states posted on the last thread?

This is huge news.  Why then is it a race between HC and BO?  Oh, yes, the CMWs ... the ones that JE wants to break up.

OK, now I'm totally confused.  Why are we trying to raise vast amounts of money this Friday if the debate is tonight?  Phil, explain this please.  Is it becuz of SC?  I've not been following along the last few days very much...it got too nasty in here.

HC/EB ....is that really serious?

MSNBC reporting that national polls show that McCain would beat BO and HC.  JE would have a better chance against McCain.

It's really time now to think of electability against a very possible McCain -  altho dems seem to be very self-destructive these many years.

83. Huron John

Nice to learn that Phil. His message is getting lost in all the backbiting from C&O supporters (and from the unforgiving Sitka).

Has the most unforgiving of all, Huron John, gotten a memorectomy and converted to Edwardianism?

The petition to the reporters says: "The American public deserves to know where all the candidates stand on the climate crisis and the solutions they propose to address it. Asking those questions is your responsibility."

The media help decide what's an "issue" in the '08 election. Unless climate change is on the '08 election agenda, it won't be on the next president's agenda. And the UN's top climate expert warned: "If there's no action before 2012, that's too late. What we do in the next two or three years will determine our future."2

Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time. And polls show that voters care about it.3 But somehow, the TV networks never got the memo. NBC's top political reporter, Tim Russert, didn't ask a single question about global warming last year. Same for Sunday political show hosts on CBS and ABC. CNN asked just 1. Incredibly, Republican-leaning Fox bested them all with a grand total of 2.

Our friends at the League of Conservation Voters will deliver your signature and comment directly to the TV networks at a press conference in front of their Washington, D.C., headquarters. And they'll use our petition signatures to prove there's public demand for TV anchors to ask about climate change.

After giving Obama due credit for taking the high road, it seems fair to acknowledge that the Clinton's remarks were stretched by the media to imply more than they intended. Might be wise for all Dem campaigns to eschew the circular firing squad approach going forward and save the more splenetic denunciations for the real adversaries. They would be the GOP guys chortling on the sidelines.

Perhaps we should cap the whole thing with an appropriate quote from the mature, prophetic voice of one who was born on this day 79 years ago, but who never saw his 40th birthday. "Our enemies will adequately deflate our accomplishments. We need not serve them as eager volunteers."

Reality check on Michael Bloomberg:

"If he runs, he will be elected as the President of the United States," Bailey said. "He is going to be elected."

Bailey and Rafshoon both mentioned more than a few times the creation of their new website: DraftMichaelBloomberg.com. On the Web site, readers can petition to "persuade" Mayor Bloomberg to run for president. About two hours after the news conference, they had gotten 115 signatures online.

Whoa. What a remarkable outpouring of support! Within just two hours of the effort being widely publicized, almost 116 people had signed the petition asking Bloomberg to run.

Sure, tens of thousands of people signed petitions asking Al Gore to run for President this cycle and well over a hundred thousand similarly asked Wes Clark to run for President back in the summer of 2003. But more than 100 signatures in two hours -- what a stunning pace!

Clearly, America is pining for Bloomberg to run, offering an outpouring of support that makes the more than 500,000 Americans who have donated to the campaign of Barack Obama and the hundreds of thousands who have donated to other candidates this cycle quake in their boots.

You can hear the train a'comin', and it's name is "Draft Michael Bloomberg."

Smear? Excuse me? The Democratic nominee doesn't need  to be selected based on GOP smears from the 90's.

It is only a "smear" if it is untrue, and if not for DNA testing, he would still be denying it all. And even today you defend him as if it never happened.  Don't you remember those days with Madeline Albright coming out to pledge her support only to dscover he was lying to her as well.  This is the crowd you want back in???  BO is a good and faithful husband that would go along way to unite this country.

White lie? He said it didn't come out the way he meant it and clarified it, Seashell, or didn't you hear that part, maybe?

LOL. Since her conversion to Edwardianism, Sea has lost half of her memory, sight, and hearing!

That's really all it takes to support him.

A dollar in 1950 will buy only 12 cents worth of goods today, 88% less than before. Inflation in my adult years increased average prices 1,000% or more:

  • example 1: a postage stamp in the 1950s cost 3 cents; today's cost is 41 cents - 1,266% inflation;
  • example 2: a gallon of 90 Octane full-service gasoline cost 18 cents before; today it is $3.05 for self-service - 1,870 % inflation;
  • example 3: a house in 1959 cost $14,100; today's median price is $213,000 - 1,400% inflation;
  • example 4: a dental crown used to cost $40; today it's $1,100 - 2,750% inflation;
  • example 5: an ice cream cone in 1950 cost 5 cents; today its $2.50 - 4,900% inflation;
  • example 6: monthly government Medicare insurance premiums paid by seniors was $5.30 in 1970; its now $93.50 - 1,664% inflation; (and up 70% past 5 years)

example: several generations ago a person worked 1.4 months per year to pay for government; he now works 5 months.

Before voting, five people met at our house to see if voting was even worth it. We are probably the only democrats in two townships.
The only viable candidates were HC and Dennis.
We could either vote uncommitted or for one of the candidates. It is possible an uncommited vote would go to HC. It is also possible that Dennis might hand his delegates to HC.
The ones who decided to vote went to our polling place. We opted not to vote which is the first time I didn't cast a possible vote since my VN service.
The Michigan dems really blew it. We have been slowly going Repub and it is iffy this year. The economy is in the tank. A very rich and very Repub right wingnut will probably win the governorship. I don't understand why it was so important to move the primary up. The many Detroit area Dems keep this state in the blue category and they are getting itchy with JE and BO not on the ballot.

    Why would Bush go to the Mideast now? It is likely he went to nail down commitments from the Israelis and acquiescence from the Saudis prior to a planned attack on Iran. Bush, who neither reads nor writes well, has a low comfort level with diplomatic go-betweens, so this is a look’em in the eye trip to talk about what happens when he pulls the trigger.

    If not, what is the alternative explanation for the trip? He is going to talk about peace talks likely to drift into the fall; change diplomatic tact, such as a demand Israel end the blockade of Gaza; schedule another Annapolis photo-op? Not likely. In addition, by White House standards this is a stealth trip with the US press attention focused elsewhere.

    A distinction without a difference is a type of argument where one word or phrase is preferred to another, but results in no difference to the final outcome. It is particularly used when a word or phrase has connotations associated with it that one party to an argument prefers to avoid.

    "In legal terminology it means a change in definition which does not change the set which is defined. For example changing 'unseparated married men' to 'males who have a non-separated spouse' is a distinction without a difference."[1]

    Wrong on both counts. The GOP, and about half the DCDems, want government to serve corporate interests and funnel taxpayers' dollars to them.

    The whole "eliminate government" thing is a scam to attaract votes, just as universal heath insurance has been for Democrats since it was put into their platform in 1948.
