Failed Conservative Values: Markos (Kos) Moulitsas on Self-Delusion

I interviewed Markos (Kos) Moulitsas, founder of the Dailykos.com and asked him about the failure of conservative values. For him, the conservative value of self-delusion was the greatest failure.  He says conservatives value their ideology over actual reality and he pointed out a series of examples of how this ideology  ignores reality.

"As long as our civilization is essentially one of property, of fences, of exclusiveness, it will be mocked by delusions."  Ralph Waldo Emerson

 Edwin:  Have conservative values failed?

Markos:  Oh, yeah, the failure of conservative values, the bottom line is that it has no bearing on reality.  They created an alternate reality – cut taxes, lower the deficit, balance the budget – where global warming did not exist, where the world was invented 6,000 years ago, where science is bogus, where the best way to educate kids is to defund the schools.

And this is the comeuppance.  When you base your reality on an ideology that has really no basis for reality, you’re doomed to failure.  When you have an ideology that says that government cannot work, you have to by default run a shitty government.  What’s the alternative?

Let’s say George Bush says the government can’t work, we need to shrink it.  So, when I appoint my director of FEMA, instead of appointing a horse lawyer, I’m going to appoint an experienced administer who knows about disaster management and logistics planning.  So when Katrina happens, the government does a fantastic job, making people’s lives better.

Suddenly, you have sort of a collision of ideologies.  When you say government can’t work, and you have government that works, where does that leave the conservatives?  In a really, really piss-poor place.

So, by default, Bush had to appoint the horse lawyer to FEMA, I could go down the list – in department after department it’s scandal after scandal.  I mean, it’s all because he appointed people who are not qualified.  Because they need to fail, they need to prove that government cannot work, and the way you prove government does not work is by running a government that does not work.

Edwin:  What in one word is the value that you are saying, fantasy?

Markos:  It’s ideology over reality.  In one word?  That’ three words.  It’s – I know what the word is – help me out.

Edwin:  I think fantasy, it’s like when you fantasize something, you’re not seeing it.

Markos:  Yeah, it’s almost like when you’re crazy.  I’m thinking when you think something’s real and it’s not, it’s delusion.  There we go.  Delusion.  That’s the word I was looking for.  Is that a value?  I think if I had to really squeeze that down to one word, delusion would be that word.

Edwin:  And what is that a value?

Markos:  I don’t think they know it’s delusion.  I think they value their ideology.  I think they want things to be a certain way.  You know, you’re conservative, and you have this idea of this ideal past that was so much better than the present, and you need to cling to that.  You know, an era where gay people did not exist, and science and medicine did not challenge religion, religious tenets.  And they want to retreat to that past.

And reality is very, very much in opposition to that world view.  So they have to create this delusional world view for it to continue to survive.

Self-delusion: The act of deluding one's self, or the state of being thus deluded.

Failed Conservative Values Metaphor: Markos Moulitsas - Dodo Birds
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhPFSLKebxA

Edwin:  Do you have a metaphor for failed conservative values, a type of land or animal?

Markos:  It’s like a dodo bird, ill-equipped to adapt or evolve to a change in environment.  The world is passing them by, and they are clinging to an outmoded and even non-existent view of what life should be like.

They’ve been able through money and through subterfuge – and a lot of BS – they’ve been able to sell their agenda for awhile to the American people, but now the country’s never been more unhappy with the direction of the country, and it’s because of the mess they’ve made.

'Delusion' at Wikipedia
A delusion is commonly defined as a fixed false belief and is used in everyday language to describe a belief that is either false, fanciful or derived from deception. In psychiatry, the definition is necessarily more precise and implies that the belief is pathological (the result of an illness or illness process). As a pathology it is distinct from a belief based on false or incomplete information or certain effects of perception which would more properly be termed an apperception or illusion.

- delusion and idiology

By Robert Nguyen on Oct 26, 2008 7:13 PM EDT

It has been worse than delusion and idiology, it is hyprocisy and  pure greed.  Lots of them don't even believe in what they proclaim to be their values. They just say so to demand of others what they can't or even intend to do. Their single purpose is to enrich themselves. This applies to all neocons and sadly to a lots of theirs religious leaders.  What ever they accuse others of, they are worse: from sex to violence.  Their god is their own creation for the sole purpose of approving what ever they do. They condem homosexuality, that they practice in closets going to prostitutes.  Pitiful!!

Robert... looks like your not alone in your observation.

58. Failed Conservatives Values: Jim Hightower on Grasping Greed
Failed Conservatives Values: Jim Hightower -- Greed        Every morning I can't get out of bed until I've heard Jim Hightower on my local NPR radio station. It's my inspiration to face another day. So, it was a real treat to meet him at the Netroots Nation Conference in his home town of Austin, Texas. I asked Jim about the failure of  conservative values.  He said the failure is the ethic of greed and the alternative to this are the progressive values of fairness, social justice and equal opportunity for all people.

 48.  Fatally Flawed Conservative Value of  Hypocrisy
Several people I asked about the failure of conservative values mentioned hypocrisy.   Michelle, Owen and Steve  brought up examples of conservative hypocrisy in;  family values, education,  finance, the economy,  the occupation of Iraq and in human rights. While we all may exhibit varying degrees of hypocrisy in our lives, it seems that the conservative movement has embraced and institutionalized this value.

- The famous writer C.S. Lewis

By David Reed on Oct 27, 2008 4:57 PM EDT

There was a famous atheist professor in England that became a Christian writer around the time of the Second World War.  His name was C.S. Lewis.  I frequently remember his writings which helped me go from atheist to Christian myself.  I have sometimes written on this DFA internet web site about the religion for others plan and another C.S. Lewis comment comes to mind: Those who make religion their God will not have God for their religion!  Please consider reading his books if you ever get the free time!

- WILX TV 10 using illusion!!!

By Lou Cipher on Oct 31, 2008 4:42 PM EDT

Helllo again from the Prince of Darkness!  Since it is actually Halloween today I'm willing to let you in on my special sin now and pay later deal!!  The way it works is I tell on you later!!  WILX TV 10 came in on the deal yesterday when they broadcast a story regarding human tissues sales by donors and made it look safe, fair and easy!!!  Dispite the fact that reporter Lauren Zakalik of said TV station has received the following information by e-mail on a variety of occasions said TV station failed to report the impact of robber barons on the donors!  Click here: http://messages.yahoo.com/Cultures_%26_Community/Issues_and_Causes/threadview?m=tm&bn=18067484&tid=1025&mid=1034&tof=37&rt=2&frt=2&off=1 and here: http://www.blogforamerica.com/view/24229 to get a more accurate view of the plight of the donors!!  ZLB Plasma Services (located at: 5015 South Cedar Street, Lansing, MI  48910; phone: 517 394-0016) has now changed the protein reguirement for the donor's blood from 4.0 to an expectation of 6.0 up to 9.0!!!  This means that the donors will have to over-eat to donate which will clog the plasma machines while the inexperienced attendants wound the donors with roofing nail size needles and then are unable to return the donor's blood to them due to the arm injuries!!!!  The fact that robber baron facilites keep the lion's share of the cash from the human tissues sales means nothing to news agencies!
