Narcissism and self-deception are survival mechanisms without which many of us might just jump off a bridge. Todd Solondz
I asked Louise Specht about the the failure of conservative values. She addressed the hierarchal and authoritarian nature of conservativism and how this can lead to narcissism for the people at the top. Steven Colbert does a great job of imitating a conservative on the Colbert Report. I just saw him begin his show lately by saying, "Did I tell you I love me lately?" He hit's the nail on the head, as does Louise.
Failed Conservative Values: Louise Specht on Hierarchy-Authoritarian-Narcissism
Conservatives seem to be very invested in hierarchy, so that what I want, is irrelevant to a conservative, and what you want, is also irrelevant. What is relevant is where each of us fits in the overall scheme of things, and how well we fulfill our roles.
When I get around conservatives, I feel like I’m going to suffocate. I think it’s very undermining to moral values to have that kind of a system. Because in a hierarchy, you have people who have too much authority over other people, and not enough questioning. So that the person who has the authority does not have the opportunity to examine what they think the people under them should be doing.
It becomes very confused with their own ego. I think the idea is that the people who are on top in the hierarchy are the better people who are more moral, just intrinsically or from their personal achievement.
But the reality is that that’s not true. That we are all morally fallible. And it’s very dangerous for a person to be in charge of others with limited or no questioning – calling the person to critical thinking about what they are directing others to do. And I’ve also seen that it leads to narcissism.
Narcissism is a sort of a personality disorder where there is a disturbance in an individuals sense of the self. A narcissistic person seeks and needs admiration of other people, while lacking empathy with their feelings or needs. David Elkind
Narcissism at Wikipedia
Narcissism describes the trait of excessive self-love, based on self-image or ego. The term is derived from the Greek myth of Narcissus. Narcissus was a handsome Greek youth who rejected the desperate advances of the nymph Echo. As punishment, he was doomed to fall in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. Unable to consummate his love, Narcissus pined away and changed into the flower that bears his name, the narcissus.
Hierarchy at Wikipedia
Many human organizations, such as governments, educational institutions, businesses, churches, armies and political movements are hierarchical organizations, at least officially; commonly seniors, called "bosses", have more power than their subordinates. Thus the relationship defining this hierarchy is "commands" or "has power over".
Questions to Ponder:
Can you point to any conservative leaders that have become Narcissistic?
Are George Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, etc. Narcissistic? If so, in what way?

- The sock puppet is a better front man because of his narcissism but the hand doesn't seem to be to me.
By Phil Specht on Jun 25, 2008 8:26 PM EDTOne of my grandfather's brothers lit out for California shortly after the start of the 20th century, so maybe a cousin of mine is weighing in?
Are they narcissists? Perhaps. I think it's more a problem of being too in love with their agenda and the power trip than themselves.
if they're narcissists, it's not the clearly overt type like Colbert plays. The American public wouldn't stand for that.. so they would be more subtle.
One definition of 'narcissist' I saw, says there's a self-deception quality, and that is easy to see in George Bush, etc. It was even in the news last year, "is Bush a liar or just self-deceived."
It was sort of said, "he's self-deceived, believes his own lies".. so he was given a pass by the media. Somehow self-deception is ok in our culture.
The gaudy homes of the rich and famous would be more a sign of narcissism.
Maybe American culture has become so narcissistic that we don't even notice it any more?
- is there a value word for, "love of power"? megalomania?

Obama’s campaign issued a statement on June 20 declaring that the Democrat supported a compromise proposal to rewrite a warrantless surveillance law, but Obama is not expected to vote on the legislation (HR 6304) this week. Civil libertarians oppose the measure.
- The Bill of Rights took effect in 1791 and these clowns are the ones to blow out the candle,
By Phil Specht on Jun 25, 2008 8:29 PM EDTdisappointing for sure, but a majority of Democrats voted against FISA in the House
During her short time in Congress, Shea-Porter has been a vocal opponent to the war in Iraq. This is her first reelection campaign, and she's in a tough race. But Carol Shea-Porter has more than earned our support—we need to keep her in Congress.
Not only can you help make sure each of these women wins in her race, but you will also be helping to turn out more votes in important presidential battleground states. Can you chip in $25 to help elect these three women, each of whom can help us lead the House and Senate in a progressive direction? Click here to donate:

Today, out of 435 members of the U.S. House of Representatives, there are only seventy-one women. And only sixteen out of one hundred members of the Senate are women. 3 When will our voices be heard? They will be heard when we act together to get progressive women elected. With your help we can make sure that these progressive women's voices are heard in Washington this fall, voices that will speak out against the war and for health care and other progressive priorities.
Thank you.

SDrobny: What's Happening To Obama? OK. I just wrote the congratulatory article below a month ago and today Obama disagrees with the Supreme Court decision striking down the death penalty in cases not involving murder
Obama's Rightward Lurch Barack Obama arrived on the political scene with a smile as beautiful as salvation itself, like a visitor from an idealized future, one where the races have combined to a golden hue, sent here to show us the way. Of course people fell in love with him.
Perhaps a brokered convention isn't such a bad idea after all.
on Bush's incredibly stupid and offensive remark to the president of the Phillipines?
Keith featured it, but I've not seen (nor read) any mention of it anywhere else outside of the blogosphere.
Dodd gets it! Along with Kucinich and Gravel. We had good candidates but the people were mesmerized. I read somewhere that BO is a reflection of peoples' longing for change. That may be true on one level, but not on a level that works. The change starts within each individual; looking outside of ourselves never never bears fruit. Massive changes can't happen until a whole lot of people change.their inner selves...When BO started using the word hope and change, he lost me immediately.
Senator Dodd Speaks in Opposition to FISA Bill on Floor of U.S. Senate This legislation before us purports to give the courts more of a role in determining the legality of the telecommunications companies actions. But in my view the Title II provisions do little more than ensure without a doubt that the telecommunications companies will be granted retroactive immunity.
