Dear Friends,
After aggressive contests in all 50 states, the Democratic Primary has come to an end. If we are to elect Barack Obama president in November, as a community, it's important that we come together.
With the unified and enthusiastic support of LGBT Americans, our chance of success is much greater. That's why we need your help to take the next step in supporting Barack.
Today, Friday, June 6th, at 6:00 p.m. Eastern time, our campaign is hosting a national call for LGBT Americans who are interested in helping Barack.
On this call, we will give a status report of our campaign as a whole, discuss LGBT policy, provide suggestions for how you can be involved and answer questions and hear your concerns.
National LGBT Conference Call
Friday, June 6th, 2008

RSVP for the conference call:

As a gay American, I couldn't be more proud to work for Barack Obama.
I believe in my heart that he will be a great president with the best judgment to lead our nation. He is a friend and will fight for justice and equality, standing up for our individual rights.
The stakes in this election are very high. A nation led by Barack Obama will stand in stark contrast to that of his opponent.
Please forward this email to others who may be interested in joining the call. If the timing of the call does not work for you, we will schedule another one in the near future.
Join us on the call and learn more about our LGBT program:

I hope you will get involved and join us on Friday.
Thanks,

- St Pete Times: Florida Democrats loved the early primary bill.
By floridagal . on Jun 6, 2008 12:05 PM EDTAfter tge fact, but it is good to see Howard Troxler come out with partial truth on this issue. He wrote about it earlier in the week, got some responses, so he wrote about it more firmly.
St Pete Times columnist says Florida Democrats loved the early primary bill....
http://journals.democraticunderground.com/madfloridian/2200
"The Democrats in the Legislature did not fight the move to the earlier primary; in fact lots of them liked it. At the last minute, as a cynical ploy, some Democrats offered an late amendment to block the change in the primary date -- but they admitted on the floor of the Legislature it was only so that they could show the Democratic National Committee they had put up a token resistance. This is the basis of the present-day revisionist claim that "we fought it but the Republicans made us do it."
- Four Florida Members Of Congress Who Backed Hillary Come Out For Obama
By Susan Rowe on Jun 6, 2008 2:00 PM EDTFour Florida Members Of Congress Who Backed Hillary Come Out For Obama
More Dem elected officials continue to coalesce behind Obama: A bloc of four Members of Congress from Florida who previously backed Hillary -- including one of Hillary's most loyal supporters -- is coming out for Obama, one of their spokespeople confirms to me.
The four are Alcee L. Hastings, Corrine Brown, Kendrick B. Meek, and Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a very committed Hillary loyalist. ...
... "It is with enthusiasm and excitement that we endorse Barack Obama for President," the four will say in a statement soon to go out to reporters that will also ask Obama to "do everything in his power" to seat the full delegations at the convention. ...
... is susch a thrill !
artist: Thao
typo - susch s/b - such
Why did I post this YouTube video of this artist named Thao (band hailing from Seattle) here today ? On a day when the price of oil is gunning towards $ 150 a barrel in one month's time ? When more of our youngest Americans are being cut down in a needless war in Iraq ?
Well, I posted partly due to the fact that the song Swimming Pools reflects an America that seems so long ago, so distant -- an age of boundless imagination, of innocence, of youthfulness, of simplicity (ie. riding on bicycles), of inclusiveness.
I hope we can seriously start to restore that type of America -- one where we still can be a leader to the world, where we still can live comfortably -- but one where the rest of the world looks to as a model as to how the hell to get out of this malise and depression (economically, spiritually and psychologically) that we ALL have gotten ourselves into to.
So, once again, I'm saying thanks to an artist named Thao and her song Swimming Pools. Hearing it put a smile on my face today.
Haven't heard a thing as to Al Gore endorsing Barack Obama. I guess it would be anti-climatic at this stage.
Mary,
If Gore has been listening closely to Obamas language, especially with regard to other foreign leaders and "petty dictators" (as he said)........I find this a disturbing trend with Obama..the so called "change" candidate................I see no change in that kind of childish rhetoric............
Thats why I wont endorse him..............Gore is a smart guy and has his reasons and ratiomale that nobody on this board or country for that matter should ever hold in question.
Mike -
You act so grown up and mature, saying Obama is "childish rhetoric".
There must be so many news reporters breathing down your neck, hiding in your bushes, just trying to catch a glimpse of you to ask you about if you're going to endorse or not.
Golly gee, I wish I could be there to be part of all that excitement, all that history, all that adultness, all that importance.
For me, I'll just have to suffer here in my childish endorsement and in my non-cynacism. Drats.
rd,
Obama is simply falling in line with other recent Presidents who lacked in certain diplomatic verbal skills...........hes not in very good company ala Reagan, Bush and Bush2..................
Hes the one squaking about a differant approach.............talking to other foreign leaders...........
BS

- Gore was among the elders who would have brokered a convention had we actually tied in the delegates.

As I think I've mentioned here, I'm in the process of joining the Foreign Service (my third career). To document (and vent) I've decided to blog about it at Midlife Diplomatic Crisis.
As you'll see, I've hit a snag.
jeez, louise --
-- rich, that foreign service requirements sound a tad strict ? Are all current U.S. foreign service personnel curretnly meeting these requirements ?
It sounds like front-end restricting and then if and once you're in, you're in ?
...to get in. Part of the deal when you join is that you need to be "worldwide available" and that means they don't want to medivac you out if they don't have to! Once you're in, you need to pass a physical every two years (or between assignments), but they don't throw you out...I think.
The whole process of joining is very difficult. The funny thing is that I though I was past the hard parts (the application, the written exam and the day long oral evaluation).
Eat a banana day - potassium is good for blood pressure. Try to get that exercise (even just 30 min's of cardio) per day. Also, cut out salt and eat lots of vegetables. We have a good friend (who is 49) who went to the doctor - they told him his blood pressure was too high. He cut out all the junk, started exercising and voila - he lost 60 pounds and his blood pressure is where it should be.
I actually went on a diet and exercise program about 10 weeks ago to lose weight. It is working (although I have a way to go). If I get down to my goal, it will probably take care of the blood pressure, but I'd like to get on the FS register sooner than that!
That's absolutely wonderful that you are willing to serve this country with your experience, education, and talents. We need people who are idealistic, who will give their best. For too long, we've had people who are ambitious but self-aggrandizing, willing to compromise for gain.
I asked a friend whatever happened to Gail Norton, Secretary of the Interior who formed a partnership with Jack Abramoff. Oh, she's in private practice now. I said that I thought she should be in jail or at least investigated. She also worked for James Watt, remember his comment that trees cause pollution? My friend remarked that you would be surprised how many people who had politicized and compromised departments and programs simply went off to lucrative private careers.
There's been way too much of that the past 16 years at least.
So, again, best wishes. And, we're grateful for your dedication.
Is his famous comment on the ethnicity of his staff.
All of the people I have met who are applying to the Foreign Service are amazingly qualified: smart, well rounded, interesting and dedicated to serving their country.
I draw no conclusions about political appointees.
I see all these talented young people headed for the basement of the West Wing and hope there are some wise seasoned types sprinkled in. (if you don't mind being called "seasoned") You will be an asset to this country wherever they post you.
I'm getting nothing but headings
I guess that's the triangular thingy on the right, but as below, my whiney post did the trick.
Thanks Phil, and best wished to you Rich on your new career. Let's hope the first posting isn't bhagdad

Vote on climate bill is blocked in Senate
By H. JOSEF HEBERT, Associated Press Writer
2 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - Senate Republicans on Friday blocked a global warming bill that would have required major reductions in greenhouse gases, pushing debate over the world's biggest environmental concern to next year for a new Congress and president.
Democratic leaders fell a dozen votes short of getting the 60 needed to end a Republican filibuster on the measure and bring the bill up for a vote, prompting Majority Leader Harry Reid to pull the legislation from consideration.
The Senate debate focused on bitter disagreement over the expected economic costs of putting a price on carbon dioxide, the leading greenhouse gas that comes from burning fossil fuels. Opponents said it would lead to higher energy costs.

Beyond gasoline: Prices surge for oil-based goods
By Ron Scherer
Thu Jun 5, 4:00 AM ET
New York - Besides gasoline, the Department of Energy calculates, there are 57 major uses of petroleum – everything from cosmetics to ballpoint pens, nylons, and even the waxes in chewing gum.
That is why the effect of high oil prices is now spreading well beyond the pump, where gasoline hit another record price of $3.98 a gallon on Wednesday. Now, consumers will have to brace themselves for other higher costs, since businesses such as Kimberly-Clark, Procter & Gamble, and Colgate-Palmolive are raising prices on their products to recoup energy costs.
In brief, this means less money in consumers' pockets in the months ahead. But it also goes beyond consumers. For example, the price of asphalt is up 65 percent so far this year – and municipalities' and states' road departments are cutting back. This may mean bumpier roads ahead.
"Not quite half of what we consume is energy, food, and other commodities that are significantly affected by the rising cost of petroleum," says Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Economy.com.
On a year-over-year basis, energy prices are up 15.5 percent. Much of the most recent surge in oil prices has yet to be factored into consumer prices. But anecdotal signs are emerging that companies can no longer absorb the higher energy costs.
Last week, for example, Dow Chemical announced a 20 percent across-the-board price increase on its products, which range from antifreeze to cleaning fluids to pharmaceuticals.
Similar moves are expected. "It's just the tip of the iceberg," says Ann Paulins, director of the School of Human and Consumer Sciences at Ohio University in Athens. "The retailers can't absorb it all."
Groceries
That sentiment is echoed by Wegmans, a grocery chain based in Rochester, N.Y., that normally tries to keep price increases to a minimum. Now, however, prices are rising on nearly every shelf.
"We're talking increased raw materials, packaging, transportation, the whole ball of wax," says Jo Natale, a spokeswoman. "We have tried to absorb as many increases as possible to remain competitive, but we have reached the point where retail prices have to go up."

Oil surges more than $10 to record over $138
By Matthew Robinson
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Oil jumped $10 to a record over $138 a barrel on Friday, extending a two-day rally to more than $15 on the slumping U.S. dollar and rising tensions between Israel and Iran.
Morgan Stanley forecast falling U.S. inventories could send U.S. crude to $150 a barrel by July 4

Oil has surged this year in part due to an influx of cash from investors seeking a hedge against the weaker dollar and inflation.
The greenback weakened against other currencies on data showing the U.S. economy lost jobs for the a fifth straight month and the unemployment rate shot up to its highest in more than three years.

Today, if Gene Roddenberry were creating Star Trek, the 'bridge' would most certainly include a GLBT, which of course it did -- we just didn't know it :~)
