Democracy for America personal blog for George Robertson
It is time for labor to get it together and get on board.
I was sad to see the failure of the kids SCHIP vote, but at another level I know it just makes the push for universal single payer healthcare that much more crucial for us all. There is a candidate running for President who I believe can actually beat the Republicans, and who is truly committed to deliver on universal single payer healthcare for the kids and for all of us. That candidate is John Edwards.
I know the labor movement wants to be out in front leading America to a better future. They always have been right there for us all. The time has come for them to point out who the real change makers are in this race, the leaders who are brave and bold enough to offer us better tomorrows. It is time for labor leaders across America to shine a bright light on the candidates who are promising the most for all Americans, as opposed to the candidates who have received the most from some Americans.
Some candidates in this race for the Whitehouse would keep spending $8300 dollars per person per year for insurance company managed healthcare, healthcare that would cost $4000 per year under a universal single payer healthcare system, Frankly I don't want to trust my future to someone who would keep wasting that much of my money. That private insurance rip-off wastes enough money to pay for a new car every three years for every family in the country or a college education for every child in the country. Candidates who lack the spine to stand up to the insurance industry lobby, will lack the spine to back much of what is best for us. Frankly they just don't have what it takes to be my President. They surely would be too timid to defend America as Commander in Chief.
It is time for labor to endorse John Edwards for President. I want them to do it because he has the guts to stand up for me and for them. There are three candidates who I think frankly deserve wholehearted endorsement. Edwards, Biden and Dodd. Because what goes around should come around, and they are all qualified to be President and real friends of labor, these three men all deserve a ringing endorsement from labor and a real campaign in their support against the big money big media brainwashing machine. The media is trying to convince everyone that a primary election is about who has the most money . They pay no attention to who has the best ideas. Who has the common touch to energize all of America. The election is over and the candidates with the most money right now, have won, if you listen to the press. Not one vote has been cast, and they are telling us who the sure winners are. Everybody loves a winner, and everyone wants to be on the winning team. If we are not careful, this premature media assessment will become an indelible reality and our democracy will have disappeared.
We all need to step up today and tell everyone that the media has missed the point. Just weighing the money is dead wrong for democracy. We need to weigh the real benefits promised to Americans, working Americans and all Americans. We alo need to weigh our trust in the man making the promises. When you measure who is leading with those yardsticks, Edwards is out in front by a mile. It is time to say so loudly, for as long as it takes to win. It is time for labor to get it together and get on board.
