Sadly, Obama's Grandmother won't see her grandson as President.

This was a statement released from Barack Obama and his sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng:

"It is with great sadness that we announce that our grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died peacefully after a battle with cancer. She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility. She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances. She was proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and left this world with the knowledge that her impact on all of us was meaningful and enduring. Our debt to her is beyond measure.

"Our family wants to thank all of those who sent flowers, cards, well-wishes, and prayers during this difficult time. It brought our grandmother and us great comfort. Our grandmother was a private woman, and we will respect her wish for a small private ceremony to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to any worthy organization in search of a cure for cancer."

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Obama Family.

- my love and blessings to the family

By Jo*in*Vermont on Nov 3, 2008 5:29 PM EST

this man has been tested in so many ways; surely this is the toughest of all in this election season.  she gave him the strength and the wisdom we see in him - come what may, I will be forever grateful for that.  he has changed people in a beautiful way.

God bless, Toot.  thank you.

aloha to barack's tutu.  she will live on in her grandson's character and leadership.

our thoughts and condolences go out to barack and maya and their families.  we all wish that tutu could have held on for another day or so to witness her grandson declared president-elect.  however, she did vote absentee in the general election, and her vote has been confirmed by a hawaii official.

********

we also offer our condolences to the family of terence tolbert, who worked tirelessly for the obama campaign in nevada.  barack's victory is his as well.
