Request to HQ
I've tried asking something in the comments, but it hasn't been answered, so I'm trying this. I'd like backup, please.Last week, with only 20 minutes warning, we were told that the blog commenting was being shut down "for a server upgrade", for a week. Now we see this message:
NOTE: For discussions, Blog for America now uses DFA-Link technology.
And given that it comes at a time when we were expecting the regular Blog for America to be back up, and there hasn't been any other communication, one can only guess this means that the switch to DFA link for commenting is permenant.
Except that nobody actually came out and told us that. And as people are figuring it out, they having to ask, one at a time, how they can change their DFA-link name, which is often their full name not normally used in the Blog for America commenting, how to fix that. And, because this is a community, people are helping each other out with that.
But if this top-down decision has been made, could we at least get a little more help? We can't even READ anything at DFA-link without signing in, whereas we could read all of Blog for America, including the comments, without having a login.
I think there needs to be some more detailed explanation of this change, and answers to the Frequently Asked Questions, either posted on the front page of Blog for America, or linked from there. People should not have to log in to see it.
Again, can I please have some backup from other people who think this would be helpful, and indeed basic courtesy from what is supposed to be "our" organization? Can you help generate a list of questions that people who are not familiar with DFA-link and used to commenting and reading at Blog for America would need answered? Thanks.
I saw this on another blog regarding this blog. Could someone please comment?
I want to sign up at DFA blog as [my blog name], and I want to use my gmail address. Can I pick the [email address] I want to use or do I have to use the one I am logged in with? Or does it matter?

Other questions
listener, could you post on that other blog and let people know that we are collecting questions in this thread?

The answer to what appears as your signature--
If you go to "edit profile" and click on "contact" you can enter anything you want in the first and last name fields. For example, I put in "hannah" and "_*" and it came up "hannah_*" Then, I went back in and changed it back to my usual moniker. All along the system still recognized me as Monica.

I think the most important issues are:
#1--- that you have to log in to be able to read the threads and to even be able to see how many people have commented. It is very off putting.
#2---We should have been warned atleast. It appears that DFA did this in a top down manner, but I'm sure that DFA feels as though it is really ground up because they are addressing peoples complaints of how the blog worked before. But--as Jennie wrote:"I think there needs to be some more detailed explanation of this change, and answers to the Frequently Asked Questions, either posted on the front page of Blog for America, or linked from there. #3 on a positive note-- I like the fact a lot that I can have two different threads open at the same time!
thank you for putting this together Jennie!

Changing formal name to moniker
I tried what Monica suggested, but when I go to my profile and click on contact info, it has a block for last name and a block for first name, with red asterisks next to each, indicating mandatory fields. Monica, are you referring to another screen? Can you describe precisely what the screen looks like, where I could substitute something other than my given name?

You can enter a single blank space as a last name.
You can enter a single blank space as a last name.
You just have to put a blank space for the last name-- but I agree... I do like your X
Rating
One flaw in the rating system that I think should be address is the ability to hit the back button on your browser and rate again, a back button, and rate again. I think there should be a quick solution to that.

Glad you asked!
Thx for thread Jennie. On the positive side, Luigi and Tara have been prompt and very helpful with answers to my dumb questions. On the negative side, I hope we go back to the old blog for plain old blogging. Because of reasons already stated, I took all the info out of my DFALink profile because I thought it would be too public now, so DFALink is fairly useless as a link - I live in a small town so I even changed my zip code. Also, I hate having to wade through the threads to find the most recent, read so many, read the small print. Of course, I hate change like everyone else and have been having to try to get used to a new computer at the same time.

by ann ilow on Friday,
I took my info out of DFAlink and i hate change too.
I don't know why we can't tell when there is a new thread. I only know and can get there when someone posts it in the old thread.

my old MAC
I can't get Opera or the other one that was suggested on my current
10.1.5. I have to upgrade, which I'll do eventually....
But on the old blog, windows wouldn't close just becuz I'd run off to get a URL. Can this be fixed on this format?

By listener on Jul 7, 2006 12:10 PM EDTIs there any way of making the print larger on this blog,
short of having to get into my software here?
It's fine for all other screens and blogs I use, except this one.
