I'll take my first hand experience over TV reporting anytime, Fred, you are getting it second hand eitherway
==========================

That's what the hawks say when they come back from Iraq - weak argument.

The FRONTLINE folk studied him - "first hand" as you put it, and they did it with experts on Rove, which you are not.

from last thread.  OK, let's talk a little about race.

Question:  Since BO is not black nor white, but a mulatto (which I don't think is polically incorrect) why is he being hailed as the first black candidate?  It's just as silly to say that he's a white candidate.

This has puzzled me.

Also, for those who read his books, did he hang around blacks or whites or mixed race as a child...as a student in high school?  Who were his friends?  As a youngster, was he more influenced by whites or blacks or neither?  Did he have any religion before Wright's church?  Was he agnostic?  What was his mother, his grandmother?  Are his mother and grandmother religious and church goers?  Did he go with them?

It seems like he ended up identifying with the black community since he started Wright's church.  Why not the white community since he was raised by white women?  Or wasn't he?  Why not a liberal white church?

I'm not trashing him...these are legit questions to help me understand.

I'll take first hand experience anyday Fred. Rove brought my old nemisis, his buddy Jim Nussle back into the White House as budget director and Rove has some classic tricks and your "experts" missed one of his favorites.

the first "contrast" ad will be an attack where rove's candidate is weakest and his opponent not necessarily so, (when voters catch on it is a draw) and a sharp response will be an followed with an attack on "negative" campaigning, and every other attack ad back will be followed with "my opponent  made me do it"

think Swift Boat, and if you think Rove had no hand in that I'll sell you a bridge

If you want to "know" Obama, read his first book, "Dreams from My Father."  He was raised in his early years by His white mother, grandparents, and for a couple of years in Indonesia, by and Indonesian student his mother married and then divorced.  He lived there in a developing country.

That's as far as I've gotten, but it  is well written and absorbing, hard to put down, book.  You would love it.

70% or more of African-American have white blood, much more if you count other non-whites, like Asian, etc.

This cultural habit we have of anyone with a fraction of colored blood as "colored" or black, is a relic of racism, goes back to the "purity" of the white race, that the white blood is contaminated. like Hitler when he said 1/4 Jewish is Jewish.  Israel says 1/4 Jewish makes you ethnically Jewish BTW, but Rabbis say  1/2 but it has to be the  Jewish mother, not the father.

We don't see a person as half white, only half black.  Any fraction of you African, makes you black.

Mulatto is from the Spanish it mean "young mule" a sterile hybrid of a male donkey and female horse - obviously derogatory - technically it does meant one black parent and one white.

=====================

We would all like to have real life first hand experience on all issue, but having it doesn't necessarily give one the moral authority to be correct...

having said that, there are probably many Rovian tactics and strategy, but his most unique and original  is attacking strengths IMO, and that is what Swifties was all about.  Kerry's greatest strength being the macho security image that fought in Viet Nam, but nonetheless against Iraq.  I believe that is what Democratic leaders found "electable" about him in the shadow of 9/11.

think "relative" strength, where your opponent has a clear advantage

if Rove's candidate has a weakness, that is where he will attack the "relative " strength of an opponent (like I said, to try an achieve a draw in an area where he should be beat)

bingo - that's Rove's and the right's favorite ploy - but in some recent reading I learned where they picked it up - Bill Clinton - and I'm sure he got it from someone else.  folks twho will play any game to win pick up what works and just run with it for as long as they can.

a life well-lived..........rest in peace, david.

*****************

some thoughts........

all this clamor about barack's decision to stay in his church is like product comparison and brand loyalty.  barack was brought to worship in rev wright's church by his future wife, michelle, and was led to christ by his pastor, rev wright.  these are relationships in a matrix of common experiences and mutual support in overcoming adversity.

not every person of color knows the stats, but he/she has anecdotes:  "a 48% growth, since 2000, in the number of hate groups operating in the United States.  The count now stands at 888--a record high." -- southern poverty law center.  this has an odd coincidence with the bush years.

i was there in los angeles when the o.j. verdict was read.  i agree with barack that o.j. was guilty.  but the jury looked at the evidence through the prism of their own experiences with the notorious l.a.p.d.  no one knew that better that the jury consultant who selected the 12 jurors and was credited by o.j.'s lawyers as the real star of the team--the behavioral, not the legal, expert.

my own experience on a jury trying an afr-am defendant was another lesson.  two white jurors voted to convict on all 12 charges--the sheriff's dept bundled about 9 unresolved cases--even one charge on which 10 of us voted to acquit b/c the plaintiff could not identify the accused in a line-up.  juries, not churches, try our real feelings about race.

Avocado Frosting

8 ounces avocado meat, approximately 2 small to medium
2 teaspoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 pound powdered sugar, sifted
1/2 teaspoon lemon extract

Peel and pit the avocado. Place the avocado into the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment along with the lemon juice and beat until lightened in color, approximately 2 to 3 minutes. Add the powdered sugar a little at a time and beat until smooth. Add the lemon extract and mix to combine. If not using right away, store in the refrigerator.

Decorate a cake frosted with this stuff with curls of candied grapefruit rind. A nice, tangy contrast with the fatty sweetness of the avocado.

A few Clinton facts:

Bill Clinton was elected in 1992 and had a Democratic majority in Congress.

In 1994, that Congressional majority was lost bigtime to the Republicans.

In 1996 when Bill Clinton was running for reelection, the Democratic minority did not change much except for a net of one senate seat.

During Clinton's reign, NAFTA was pushed by Hillary and  Bill Clinton, both taking a very active role in what was a Republican dream bill.

Bill Clinton signed off on giving away a large chunk of the media and the partisan effects of that have made it much harder for Democrats to get equal time to get their own messages out and while being pummeled by the what is now the corporate media.

The entire party took big embarrassing moral blows because of Bill Clinton's repeated affairs with women and repeated denials, including the Monica Lewinsky and the Paula Jones civil trial.

While Bill Clinton brought back the deficits effectively, he still left a debt of more than $5 trillion dollars and did lots of damage to the  Democratic Party.

IMO, Bill Clinton is not as advertised. He wasn't a good president -- for the Democrats.

And I would like to know whose idea it was that he run for prez after saying he didn't have that intention.

There's more here than meets the eye.  Åt least we know about HC.  BO is still very unknown and that voting of his in the US Senate is troubling...as hers is.

Michelle took him to church?  Maybe that's why I'm not comfy with her.  IMO she's radical and that remark about finally being proud to be an American is troubling.  I suspect she espouses what Wright says and BO, her husband doesn't?

I don't see him as particularly angry (I wish he had more in him) but I see her as very angry ... and wearing the pants.   I wonder now if she's the one behind his run..

I think she's power hungry.   I've always sensed that and now it makes sense if she's the person who took him to the radical church.

The fierce urgency of convenience  When America talks about race and radicals  Jared StoryIssue date: 3/20/08 Barack Obama is fond of Dr. King's oft-quoted phrase - "the fierce urgency of now."
So when is it urgent for the right and the white majority to discuss racism or any of the other 'isms' that deter this great country from living up to its touted principles?
It's simple really - when it is convenient or expedient for them to do so.
The recent resurgence of debate over whether or not Obama should distance himself from his pastor is just the most recent manifestation of the right's strategy of discrediting those who are often only nominally progressive by linking them to others who are much more progressive, even radical....

Camp Hill mayor switches parties to vote for Obama  by ELLEN LYON, Of The Patriot-News Thursday March 20, 2008, 6:03 PM

Camp Hill Mayor Lou Thieblemont switched his lifelong Republican registration this week so he can vote for Democratic Sen. Barack Obama in Pennsylvania's April 22 primary.

"I'm sick and tired of the politics of fear in this country. He's the only one who doesn't do that," Thieblemont said of Obama. "He's the only candidate who's said he'd talk to our enemies and try to get some common ground."

A retired airline pilot, Thieblemont, 62, said he doesn't believe the Bush administration's claims that the United States is safer now. "We're all alone in the world. We have basically lost all our friends in the world with comments like 'bring it on.'"

Donovan - The Lullaby of Spring

spring has showered far her drip
splash and trickle running,
plant has flowered in the sand
shell and pebble sunning;

so begins another spring,
green leaves and of berries,
chiff-chaff eggs are painted by
motherbird eating cherries

in the misty, tangled sky,
fast a wind is blowing
in a newborn rabbit's heart
river life is flowing

so begins another spring,
green leaves and of berries,
chiff-chaff eggs are painted by
motherbird eating cherries

from the dark and whetted soil,
petals are unfolding
from the stony village kirk
easter bells of old ring

so begins another spring,
green leaves and of berries,
chiff-chaff eggs are painted by
motherbird eating cherries

spring has showered far her drip,
splash and trickle running
plant has flowered in the sun
shell and pebble sunning

"Old age should burn and rave at close of day"

Donovan - Do Not Go Gentle (Beat Cafe)

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

March 18, 2008

Getting clearance to stay in the United States for two years is not easy. The 16-year-old Nigerian boy needed a visitor’s visa and a passport, and the Nigerian government said the latter would take several months to obtain.

the forces arrayed against Obama's campaign (the Clintons' DLC machine, the McCain straight talking express, the neo-con radio talk show hosts, etc.) remind me of the forces arrayed against Howard in the fall and winter of 2003, early 2004

Also, I want to thank David and his family for their service to democracy. We need more patriots like him.

The wife and I went out last night for a night out (we've had few this winter)...ended up having only one drink each as a fellow there brought up the discussion of politics, saying Bush was right and the war in Iraq was needed. My wife said she could even hear me when she went to the ladies room and she ushered me out of the place before something happened...I was only talking loud as he was trying to talk over me and that wasn't going to happen...lol

The wife remembers the bar room brawls from my youth and said she saw that look in my eyes...thought someone fired up this old fogy...she was right.

J.Happer  !!!!!!!!!!!!!!                             why did you post such an ignorant statement on a deceased DFA member who did not hide behind a nickname.  I  wrote this blog in hopes of honoring a dear devoted DFA member and so many have chosen to comment on other things.  Dave deserved better than this from DFA and its members.  So if you don't reply to me I hope every member reads this and outs you for your ignorance.  Dave wil RIP tomorrow at Jefferson Barracks in St.Louis for those who knew his dedication as a DFA member who even on disability  and ill on fixed income sponsered scholarships for DFA training for someone who could not afford to pay.  This is what grassroots is based on and from not a rude ignorant person who I wish an apology from.  Thanks to all who wrote comments His mom who is 90 yrs old and his brother send their regards to our work and efforts for Democracy of which Dave loved...Retta  Pls let me hear who this person is who wrote that reply.
