Full "Night School Comment" Etc.....
I just signed up for the next session on counterting the 30,000 lobbyists....the comment I submitted was wayyyyy too long for the allotted space. So here's what I wrote in its fullness....
"If, and it is indeed a very big if, we had a million ACTIVE citizen lobbyists fully informed/dedicated/committed and able to rebut the health insurance industry's (PR)opaganda/lobbying etc....we would have single payer this year. The "impossible" would be compelled. There are no sane objectively rational arguments for the existence of this parasitic industry *except* for the cold political fact that they are allowed to legally bribe our lawmakers through the "campaign financing. The corrupt status quo could not stand the collective light of a million of us lighting a candle. Sadly, Obama will need to be led by the people...as he hasn't yet the courage to take the risk of using his bully pulpit to go over the heads of the establishment and to lead a populist revolt......so yes, we'll have to do it ourselves....one by one by one."
I'm tempted to go on a bit longer now that I have all this "space" lol. However if that paragraph didn't convey the message, I doubt that ten more longer ones would make much difference for you. (But I'll add afew anyway ;-) It's becoming painfully obvious that the old bromide that real change is a bottom up proposition is absolutely true. I suppose actually having power must somehow mess with your head/heart in such a way that you forget about the ideals that impelled you to get into politics/public service in the first place.
If...and yes, it's a big if...a million dedicated activists could assemble five million passionate citizens in DC on a hot July day....all signed up/documented and organized (or the park service will claim the numbers are one tenth the size) all DEMANDING single payer....and the polls showed that the people actually understood the benefits and it had a 70% approval rating; it would be passed and signed this year.
When congress is more afraid of the people, than it is of the lobbyists/contributors; then they will pass Single Payer (which is what both Dr Dean and Obama have in the past proclaimed the best/most ideal solution.
The same mass movement that could push the bums back on single payer could also achieve real campaign finance reform and real ethics laws.
These things are "impossible" only if we believe they are impossible....and conversely, if/when be believe/know in our bones that they are inDEED possible; they become virtually inevitable.....despite the fact that the opposition will do all in its considerable power to sabotage/derail anything that is good and decent. We can overcome!!!
