Bylaw problem 1-- getting secretaries
Linked to groups: Northside DFA
The bylaws deal with the offices of treasurer, recording secretary, and membership secretary in a way reminescent of Genesis. "The bylaws said that there would be a treasurer, and there was a treasurer, and the bylaws saw that it was good." There is no specification as to how three offices will be filled. If the idea is for the Steering Committee to fill those offices from among themselves, the bylaws should say so.
Otherwise, something like: "The officers of the linkup shall be two cohosts, a treasurer, a recording secretay, and a membership secretary." And the directions for election should be for the election of officers.
That was down my mental list of suggestions somewhere.
I wasn't counting at-large members of the steering committee as officers, but wanted something like "officers and at-large members of the steering committee will be elected ..."
Either one would do.
My idea wasn't to change what I think teh steering committee wants, but change teh language to make it explicit.
Frank,
I think this is a good comment: want to write up a formal "amendment" to clarify this so it can be proposed at the next meeting?

By Sandra Verthein on Jan 8, 2007 7:12 AM ESTFrank, why do you have to spoil it all by applying logic and common sense? :-)
Your point is a good one, and when we go over that section of the bylaws in our upcoming meetings, you should raise that. Though it is possible that someone will "run" for secretary, it is more likely that this person will need to be choosen from among the steering committee. My only change to what you say above is that it should list all those positions and add "up to 5 at-large members" or whatever we want to call them, since I believe right now we have an upper limit of 10 steering committee members, and that would maintain that upper limit.
