MoveOn.org, an organization most of us are familiar with, asked me to host a small (or large) event in front of Sunnu's regional office in Portsmouth. (I hope it is OK to cross-promote on this forum.) They have put together a report, based on extensive polling, showing how the American people see the link between our endless war and the recession. We will be presenting this report to Sununu's staffers (he is unlikely to be there) Thursday, April 24 @ 11 am. The office is at 1 New Hampshire Avenue, Portsmouth, near the entrance to Pease.

MOVEON MEMBERS TO DEMAND SEN. SUNUNU STOP SPENDING ON ENDLESS WAR AND FOCUS ON ISSUES AT HOME

WILL RELEASE NEW REPORT: NEW HAMPSHIRE VOTERS SEE ENDING THE IRAQ WAR AS BEST WAY TO HELP LOCAL ECONOMY

Durham, NH – On Thursday, April 24, members of MoveOn.org Political Action in the Seacoast Region will release a new report, "Iraq and Recession". The report focuses on groundbreaking poll numbers that show that voters in New Hampshire believe that the billions of dollars a week spent on Iraq war should be invested in economic priorities at home.

“Senator John E. Sununu has consistently voted with the President to spend half-trillion dollars on this endless war in Iraq, while ignoring the mounting economic pressures of voters here in New Hampshire. The billions per week we’re spending there could be invested in our faltering economy here at home,” said Timothy Horrigan, local MoveOn member. “It’s time to bring our troops home and use those same dollars for the priorities of most Americans--health care, clean energy, and job creation--to help those hurt by the impending recession.”

After the event, local MoveOn members will deliver the report to Sen. Sununu at his Seacoast Region office at the Pease International Tradeport in Portsmouth.

"The senator does not support torture," Chamberlain told the group, and suggested they review an op-ed piece Sununu wrote.

"The main thing ... is we have got an economic crisis ... and people in the Granite State recognize we simply can't afford to fight this war," Timothy Horrigan, of Durham, said.

Portsmouth resident Kathleen Somssich asked that Sununu reconsider the nation's commitment in Iraq. Her son is an officer whose unit is being "stop-lossed," and who will soon be headed back to Iraq after already serving 15 months there. Somssich said she believes there is a direct correlation between the recession and the war. Diamond said given the choice, his priority list would be topped with national health care and better, cheaper education for everyone.

According to the National Priorities Project, for the money being spent on the Iraq War, New Hampshire could give 564,093 people health care, fund 263,328 Head Start places for children, provide 205,402 scholarships for university students or provide 11,157 affordable housing units.
