Dean for HHS?

As per this DailyKos diary, it looks like Tom Daschle's nomination for HHS Secretary may be going down in flames. If it does, then President Obama (oh how I love the sound of that!) will need to make a new pick for the position.

I can think of no better candidate (and I admit that includes the current nominee) for the position than Dr. Gov. Howard Dean.

When Gov. Dean decided to run for DNC Chair, it was all of us here at DFA who got whole hog behind him and, with the help of lots of other like-minded progressive Democrats and forward-thinking state Party chairs, were able to get him elected. We all know how that turned out (can you say President Obama and big majorities in the House and Senate?).

So now there may well be another opportunity to get Gov. Dean's back, and truth be told, all of our own backs becuase we really, really need universal health care (not just insurance, but care) and if anyone can make it happen, along side of President Obama of course, it's Howard Dean.

How about we all get started hitting our lists, and sending our thoughts off to the Administration?

Howard Dean for Secretary of Health and Human Services!

If you're so inclined, you can send along your thoughts to the boss.

Another reason to go with Obama

(or at least not with HRC) - from the NY Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/10/us/politics/10clinton.html

Read the whole thing; here's a snippet to give you an idea:

"Several aides, donors and supporters, who requested anonymity to recount private conversations with the candidate, said they had warned Mrs. Clinton that her husbands attacks on Mr. Obama were demeaning to her and hurting her campaign. Mrs. Clinton replied that her husband became carried away at times but that she did not see any real harm from his approach, they said."

Great info for your not-so up on politics neighbor

While we politically addicted types that have us joining groups like DFA tend to be fairly well informed, many of our friends and family members may not be quite so up-to-date on the relative merits of the current crop of candidates.

To help you help them, there's a great resource (IMHO of course!) with voter guides, interviews and articles in the Philadelphia Jewish Voice at www.pjvoice.com/v17/17100dossier...

As you, along with everyone else gets inundated with e-mails, robo-calls - have you noticed that they're all GOP funded hit jobs? - mail, radio and TV ads, remember that it is still 1-on-1, face-to-face interactions that have the greatest impact, like when you let your neighbor know that the real reason for the GOP attack robo-calls and ads is to get them so fed up that they stay home on Election Day and the absolute best way to thumb their nose at the GOP's negativity is to go and vote Democratic up and down the line.

Making time to canvass, to engage your cashier at the supermarket, to ask co-workers you know have a progressive outlook if they're going to vote, to remind your friends and neighbors to get to the polls is even more important than phone banking (which is still important!) and more important than sending yet another $50 to the campaign of your choice, though if you've got it, send it!

Eleven - yes, that's 11 days left until Election Day!

Come out and canvass for Lois Murphy!

Written by: Joe Magid on Oct 16, 2006 10:43 PM EDT

Linked to groups: Lower Merion Grassroots

We're going out again this Sunday, October 22nd knocking on doors for Lois Murphy.

We'll be meeting at the Lower Merion/Narberth Democratic Committee Headquarters (29 W. Lancaster Ave.) at 1pm.

LMNDC HQ is directly across from the Philadelphia Sports Club (where the Ardmore movie theater used to be). There is parking around behind the building - heading west on Lancaster, make a right into the lot just past the Subway shop.

Please let Rosie Goldensohn at the Murphy Campaign (610.896.0502) know if you can make it.

I look forward to seeing you - even if you can only spare an hour or two - even if you'll be a bit late.

Latest polls have Lois moving into a lead that is just over the margin of error. Things are heading in the right direction, now we need to bury the incumbent and we need EVERYONE to pitch in, one way or another, and to be honest, there is no better way than face-to-face conversations with undecided voters which is exactly who we'll be talking to on Sunday.

If you can't make the canvass, Rosie can ALWAYS use help, making phone calls every day and evening through and including election day. Every minute you can help will make a HUGE difference.

Be there or be square!

Lois Murphy canvass alert and Governor Dean Fundraiser for Admiral Sestak

Written by: Joe Magid on Oct 7, 2006 1:43 PM EDT

Linked to groups: Lower Merion Grassroots

First off, Governor Dean is coming to town on Wednesday, 10/11 for a Joe Sestack fundraiser - see below for details.

Meanwhile, we need as many LM Grassroots members as possible to come out canvassing for Lois Murphy in Lower Merion tomorrow and next Sunday.

We'll be meeting at the Lower Merion/Narberth Democratic Committee Headquarters (29 W. Lancaster Ave.) at 1pm on both days. LMNDC HQ is directly across from the Philadelphia Sports Club (where the Ardmore movie theater used to be). There is parking around behind the building - heading west on Lancaster, make a right into the light just past the Subway sub shop.

Please let me (610.642.0451) and/or Rosie Goldensohn at the Narberth Murphy Campaign office (610.667.5061) know if you can make it.

I look forward to seeing as many of you as can possibly make it - even if you can only spare an hour or two - even if you'll be a bit late.

Lois is a spare 2 points ahead of the incumbent (I try never to speak his name so as to hold down my lunch…) in the latest independent poll - now is the time for Lois to pull away, but we need EVERYONE to pitch in, one way or another, and to be honest, there is no better way than face-to-face conversations with undecided voters which is exactly who we'll be talking to tomorrow the 8th and next Sunday, the 15th.

Be there or be square!

10/1--Pottstown
10/7--Collegeville
10/8--Lower Merion (FAMILY CANVASS)
10/14--Plymouth Meeting
10/15--Lower Merion (FAMILY CANVASS)

All canvassing is tentatively set for 10a to 2p, meeting around 9:30 a to get organized each day.

While everyone is more than welcome to participate in a many canvassing days as they are able, we'd really like to see a great turnout of our local troops for the 2 Lower Merion days, Sunday October 8 and Sunday October 15.

Please RSVP to me (jsmagid@grassrootsforamerica.us) right away and I'll communicate your expected participation to the Murphy Campaign volunteer coordinator, Rosie Goldensohn.

Thanks in advance and look forward to seeing you on the 8th and 15th.

January Link-up set for Thursday, 1/12

Written by: Joe Magid on Jan 3, 2006 10:30 PM EST

Linked to groups: Lower Merion Grassroots

Folks,

I hope everyone made it through the holidays in one piece and had a chance to relax and enjoy time with family, or just savior some down time.

As planned, the ad-hoc steering committee got together to work on plans for the next few months and made some great progress towards that end.

If you head over to Link you'll see that we've scheduled our next Link-up for a week from Thursday, January 12.

We've got something for just about everyone on the agenda, so please RSVP right away and grab a neighbor or a friend and high-tail it over to my place next Thursday!

- Joe

PS Feel free to drop me an e-mail (jsmagid@grassrootsforamerica.us) or give me a call (610.642.0451) with questions, thoughts and ideas.

Holiday respite/planning for '06

Written by: Joe Magid on Dec 8, 2005 12:52 PM EST

Linked to groups: Lower Merion Grassroots

Folks,

A quick note to let you know that we're going to take a break this month - everyone's got quite enough to deal with I expect - and crank it back up in January - with a reasonable possibility that we'll have a Link-Up meeting on Thursday, January 12th.

Feel free to check back here at DFALink (Link) and of course we'll do our best to give you due warning so you can join us.

In the meantime, our ad-hoc steering committee will be putting together a suggested agenda for January as well as a battle plan for the fast approaching election season. If you'd like to have some input into the developing plans and/or take the lead on any aspect of that plan, please let me know ASAP (jsmagid@grassrootsforamerica.us or 610.642.0451).

Happy Holidays and a peaceful and prosperous New Year to all,

Joe
