Howard Dean is BACK!

Written by: Charles Chamberlain on Mar 2, 2009 2:20 PM EST

Linked to groups: Blog For America

You may have heard by now that Gov. Howard Dean is coming back to Democracy for America. Today we made the official announcement. Here’s some of what the good Doctor sent to DFA members today:

I'm returning to DFA and I have to admit, it'll be nice to work out of my old office in Burlington. I'll also be hitting the road with you, stumping for grassroots candidates and advocating for the issues that matter most to you and me. For one, I think you know that healthcare for all is an important issue to me. I look forward to working with you to pass meaningful reform that makes sure that every American has the care they need.

Help me welcome Howard back as a Strategic Advisor for DFA with a contribution today.

We're very excited to bring his strategic thinking and inspiration back to Democracy for America. It's perfect timing too. Since we will be celebrating our 5th birthday this month.

Here's more of what Gov. Dean had to say in his message to members today:

When my campaign for President ended in 2004, the political pundits and talking heads said our movement was over. They said you'd give up, you'd walk away, and politics would never hear from you again.

They got it wrong.

Five years later, DFA is stronger than ever. We started with a solid 300,000 members. Today, we boast over a million.

We started our support for progressive candidates with the original Dean Dozen. Today, you've elected over 575 DFA-endorsed candidates to all levels of office, including our first Dean Dozen candidate Barack Obama and his campaign for U.S. Senate.

Four years ago, thanks to your hard work, I was elected Chair of the Democratic National Committee. We continued to work together to reform the Democratic Party and fight for votes in all 50 States. Thanks to you I had the grassroots support needed to get the job done.

When we launched DFA, a core mission of mine was to train a new generation of citizen activists. Five years later, the DFA Campaign Academy and Night School have trained almost 20,000 activists and candidates nationwide in the skills to win and the results will pay off for years to come.

The DFA Community has held over 50,000 events from Juneau, Alaska to Wichita, Kansas, from Los Angeles to New York. Whether you participated in a candlelight vigil to end the war, delivered Social Security success stories to wavering members of Congress, or got together for a movie and phone banking night, your activism has changed the way Washington does business. They know we're watching. And they know we aren't going away.

We've done a lot in five years, and we're just getting started. Stand with me again and deliver DFA the resources to win for another 50.

When he says they got it wrong, he ain't kidding.

They said changing the Democratic Party from the inside out couldn’t be done. They doubted how new technology could engage and harness the energy of millions of Americans craving change. They said Democracy for America wouldn’t last.

DFA members proved them all wrong.

Help us celebrate by contributing today. After that, why not make sure all your likeminded friends, family and co-workers sign up with DFA too. We have a lot of work to do make the big changes happen on all the issues that matter.

The more of us working together to win, the more successes we’ll have over the next 5 years and beyond.

-Charles

Glad Howard is coming back. Hope that DFA now puts the focus squarely on helping progressives to raise the money they need from non-corporate sources, because as long as the current campaign corruption goes unchallenged, we're  not going to see the "change we need."

Let's set a goal to fund ENTIRELY for 20 or so progressive Congressional candidate from across the country. Let's also give them the support they need to meet their constituents and hone their message

I am so happy! I actually hoped for a long time that Gov. Dean wouldn't get a cabinet position, so he would come back to DFA. Then it seemed he wasn't going to come back anyway, so I hoped that he got the HHS position so he was at least involved *somehow*. But now, I'm glad he didn't get it because this is what I wanted all along! I really think Gov. Dean has more power to make our country better by inspiring the grassroots through DFA then through some silly cabinet position ;-) We have the power!

Come see Howard Dean at the 6th Annual DemocracyFest! http://www.DemocracyFest.net

nicely "full circle" about this, isn't there?

Welcome back. I hope we find some of our old pals coming back around. Nothing against Jim, but it just wasn't the same without Howard around.

Thank you, Guvnor.

Since graduating from college in 1980 I have discovered that often times you act like a jerk, you do not get picked for various managment vacancies.  I guss Mr. Obama realized this to.  Find it funny that the DFA is having to welcome him back.  He was a failure at running for President and now failed at getting elected as HHS.  He and Mr. Gore may want to go hit some bar together and discuss their failures.

Welcome back Dr. Dean!

Repubs know if Dean rides off into the sunset, and his inspiration with him, Dems will give back their gains.

Wow, finally, he's home where he's appreciated! We'd probably be stuck with Mcsame if it wasn't for Howard dean's successful 50 state strategy, so we all owe our guy many thanks and kudos for a job well done. That being said, Howard belongs HERE where he can REALLY make a difference! It's good to be back and hello to Kimmy, puddle, all the Deaniacs whose names are so familiar...but, if any occasion deserves a BAT, this is it. I'd be proud to hit that sucker a time or two...like the old days...we've got your back, Howard. Thanks for all you do. xoxoxo

Dean Pushing Big Apple 'Baby College'

[...]

Now that his tenure has ended at the DNC, Dean is working to launch a school readiness program in New York City. The integrated services are expected to include home-nurse visits, parenting workshops, day care, early childhood education, and after-school programs.

"We found a school, there are some wonderful people associated with it, it has especially strong leadership, there are social services in the district," he said. "So, all the ingredients are there. And now the question is: can we coordinate it and can I come up with some money so that nobody gets left behind?"

To learn how to get this project off the ground, Dean has consulted Geoffrey Canada, the president and CEO of the Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ), a multi-faceted anti-poverty program which includes something called "Baby College," a place where pregnant women and their significant others receive counseling on how to care for newborns.

Dean, who grew up in New York on Park Avenue, is not the only one who has looked to the HCZ program as a model.

While campaigning for president, Obama proposed replicating the Harlem program in 20 cities across the country. He said the federal government would provide half of the funding with the rest of the money coming from philanthropies and businesses.

The budget blueprint which Obama unveiled last week  follows up on his campaign promise: it includes money to support the creation of "Promise Neighborhoods" in which schools and community organizations would collaborate to provide broad support to families and children in high-poverty areas.

While Dean would have enjoyed working on Obama's "Promise Neighborhood" program, the former Vermont governor is hoping that the project he is spearheading in New York can become a useful model.

"This doesn't get you to the 20 cities," said Dean. "But what you need is a very successful demonstration project."

"I've already spoken with (Education Secretary) Arne Duncan," said Dean. "He thinks this is all a great idea."

Dean first became interested in early childhood intervention while trying to get a handle on prison costs as governor. Under his Success by Six program, every child in Vermont, whose parents ask for it, gets a visit within two weeks of their birth from a social worker or school nurse.

The purpose of the visits is to help parents cope with the birth of a new child.

"It's emotional deficits, its teenagers having kids, its low educational aspirations, its the disorganization that comes from intense poverty," said Dean.

He likens the initiative to Head Start, which offers services to children between the ages of 3 and 5, but says there is an advantage to working with even younger children and their parents.

"Most kids are hard-wired by the time they are three," said Dean.

In addition to promoting early childhood education, Dean's post-DNC plans include joining the government affairs practice at McKenna, Long & Aldridge LLP. He also plans to promote health-care reform through Democracy for America and democratic institutions worldwide through the National Democratic Institute.
