All-Stars in the Lead
Linked to groups: Blog For America
There are just three candidates left in the 2007 Grassroots All-Star competition -- narrowed down from a field of seven.
Darcy Burner (WA-8), technologist and community leader, is currently in the lead with 50.86% of the vote.
Charlie Brown (CA-4), a former rescue helicopter pilot and avid outdoorsman, is celebrating his final-round status on his official campaign blog. A push from his supporters could boost him up over his current 49.14% to trump Darcy's total.
And Eric Massa (NY-29), cancer outreach advocate and former Naval Officer, has a DFA Grassroots All-Stars voting request front-and-center on his campaign website. Any surge in votes for one of these three campaigns could change the outcome of this race dramatically.
Instant Runoff Voting (IRV) can seem mystifying. If you're wondering how it's possible for Darcy and Charlie to share 100% of the vote, you should take a look at the explanation of how IRV works at Wikipedia. In short, IRV allows citizens to vote their conscience without creating a "spoiler effect" and guarantees that the winning candidate receives at least 50% of the vote. Because we're using IRV Eric Massa could easily jump out of third place and into the lead with just a few more votes. Don't count Eric out!
All three of these candidates have made a strong commitment to bottom-up government. They ask, they listen, and they create lasting change. If you haven't voted, there's no time to waste. If you haven't asked your friends to support your candidate, the time is now. The challenge will come to a close Wednesday night at midnight and the winner will be announced shortly afterwards.
Tomorrow night is the first Democratic candidate debate from SC. I hope to read your comments on it. This election, as opposed to 2004, I will not be involved and therefore not lending an opinion on the candidates, but am always willing to listen and learn from the sometimes vibrant and violent exchanges.
cheers
Howard Dean is first.
But who is going to look out for the rights of American women? We lost a lot this last week.
http://journals.democraticunderground.com/madfloridian/1293
It is about more than just abortion, it is about control. It is about our role in this country.
Tara is also first today.
wow Tara is back. Welcome
Today is a pivotal day in our nations history. Many things are unfolding.
The Wizard of Oz is finally exposed for his lies. Things are coming together to show the world what we know. That we have been lied to (can u believe it) for the past 6 yrs.
cheney saying he is sick so kucinich doesn't start the impeachment proceedings. Then Cheney shows up on the hill to bash Reid and the Dems. Don't you guys get it? They are friggen criminals.
tillman's family and jessica lynch show up on the hill to say bush is a liar.
so much more.
and I just watched Vanessa Redgrave, that great actress, saying our world is falling apart because of the torture and violation of human rights.
I cried listening to her.
One thing she said, keep fighting the good fight. don't let those sob's stop you from doing your part. I for one won't
My country, My world.
Bush and his hind are toast.
We are going to take our country and our world back.
Here's a different take..
January 2007: "So Bush's confident strut, his incessant upbeat pronouncements about the war, his complacent smirks, his callous indifference to the unspeakable horror he has unleashed in Iraq – these are not the hallmarks of self-delusion, or willful ignorance, or a disassociation from reality. He and his accomplices know full well what the reality is – and they like itClaiming the Prize: Bush Surge Aimed at Securing Iraqi Oil
At any time within the next few days, the Iraqi Council of Ministers is expected to approve a new "hydrocarbon law" (OIL) essentially drawn up by the Bush Administration and its UK lackey, the Independent on Sunday reports. The new bill will "radically redraw the Iraqi oil industry and throw open the doors to the third-largest oil reserves in the world. "It would allow the first large-scale operation of foreign oil companies in the country since ..1972.
(But Maliki isn't going along. It hasn't been signed yet. THAT's what this whole thing is about. not so much dividing the country's only real income up (oil) between the Kurds, Shi'ites and Sunni, but --- to give it to large foreign oil companies. And our soldiers are dying for it. )
As the paper notes, the law will give Exxon, BP, Shell and other carbon cronies of the White House unprecedented sweetheart deals, allowing them to pump gargantuan profits from Iraq's oilfields for decades to come.
But they've already made billions from the war - Haliburton (Cheney) the Carlyle Group (Bush Senior) and many other insiders. They've already won - but they're greedy. The insurgents have declared they will NEVER let it happen. So the oil pipelines are bombed every other day.
May I ask why you are'nt going to be involved in this election?
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Sure Joan,
But not right now.......odd thing is, Im not alone.
3. floridagal - that decision is downright creepy and very dangerous from a women's rights perspective; i really thought that kind of thinking was on its way out - certainly never thought i'd see it in a modern day Supreme Court decision! thanks for posting this compendium of opinions about it.
May I ask why you are'nt going to be involved in this election?
Sure. Mike Gravel is the only Democrat who is saying what I want to hear and they won't even let him debate. I'll vote, but that's it.
Really wise words from Mary Travers (Peter Paul and Mary fame).
"Always participate in the time you live in."
There are no sidelines whether we like to think so or not.
Of course the plan was to forment chaos while they're setting up the great OIL takeover.
I've believed for a long time that the chaos was planned. Putzfollies is not an incompetent regime but rather dangerous, greedy and seemingly unstoppable. It knows exactly what it's doing and grabbing control of the oil, while endeavoring to grab total control over women is what these criminals are all about.
What? Cheney went to the hospital via Capitol Hill?
Start those impeachment proceedings, dammit!
Why isn't Mike Gravel in the debates? Can't anyone declare he/she's running and then be included?

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Just about anything anybody needs to start "going green" -- from energy-efficient light bulbs to fast-growing trees -- will be exhibited at an Enviro Fair to be held at 6 p.m. on April 27 in the lobby of the Alumni Arena on the University at Buffalo's North (Amherst) Campus.
The free fair, organized by UB Green and Re-Tree WNY, precedes the 8 p.m. Distinguished Speaker Series lecture by former vice president and environmental activist Al Gore. The Gore lecture is the signature event of UB's "Greener Shade of Blue" initiative to raise awareness about climate change and celebrate the university's decades-long commitment to environmental stewardship.
More than a dozen businesses and organizations will participate in the Enviro Fair in an effort to provide lecture goers with the opportunity to "go green" and take home environmental solutions recommended by Gore.
Walter Simpson, UB energy officer and director of the UB Green office in University Facilities, said the Enviro Fair will give attendees a chance to interact with, and learn from, participants in the local environmental movement.
"Everyone who's attending Al Gore's lecture is concerned about climate change," Simpson said. "They're eager to get involved, but they may be wondering how to begin.
"Enviro Fair introduces attendees to people who already are working on this issue so that they can start addressing climate change in their own lives."

...may it come true. :)
My energy saving light bulbs don't work in places where I have dimmer switches. Anyone know if such bulbs exist?
My energy saving light bulbs don't work in places where I have dimmer switches. Anyone know if such bulbs exist?
Same here. I have 20 lights that won't dim since I changed to cfb's. Haven't seen any that dim in the stores. Oh well...the savings in money and pollution are worth it.
Why isn't Mike Gravel in the debates?
He has dangerous ideas -- Democratic ones.
Can't anyone declare he/she's running and then be included?
Apparently, offending liberals isn't a concern.
Please tell me that there is *not* a debate on tomorrow night at the same time
as the Moyers special on PBS. please tell me it isnt so...
I thought Moyers was on on Thurs. If they're on at the same time, thank goodness for my VCR.

Steven Rosenfeld and Bob Fitrakis ask: "Did the most powerful Republicans in America have the computer capacity, software skills and electronic infrastructure in place on Election Night 2004 to tamper with the Ohio results to ensure George W. Bush's re-election? The answer appears to be yes."
Frustration Over Wall Unites Sunni and Shi'ite
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/042407B.shtml
The unexpected outcry about the proposed construction of a wall around a Sunni Arab neighborhood has revealed the depths of Iraqi frustration with the petty humiliations created by the new security plan intended to protect them. American and some Iraqi officials were clearly taken aback by the ferocity of the opposition to the wall, and on Monday the United States was showing signs of backing away from the plan.
Good news for our side. Why this criminal house of cards hasn't fallen is beyond me.
Special Counsel to Probe Karl Rove's Political Activities
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/042407J.shtml
Most of the time, an obscure federal investigative unit known as the Office of Special Counsel confines itself to monitoring the activities of relatively low-level government employees, stepping in with reprimands and other routine administrative actions for such offenses as discriminating against military personnel or engaging in prohibited political activities. But the Office of Special Counsel is preparing to jump into one of the most sensitive and potentially explosive issues in Washington, launching a broad investigation into White House political operations headed by chief strategist Karl Rove.
Ok, Moyers wed night 9-1030(eastern) on PBS
Debate thursday(MSNBC) 7 PM(eastern)
...according to the tv guide.
CNN is reporting on the Rove probe.
Month by month, day by day, we are getting closer to ridding ourselves of this awful AWFUL war mongering cabal.
CNN reporting that the WH is not happy with this. LOL
Squirm, putzes, squirm.
Where's Cheney? I'd rather he be in jail than in the hospital.
28.
sea,
I'll be super suprised if the WH investigates itself to our satisfaction. I can only hope.
This was a tough choice to make but I chose Darcy for my first choice and made Charlie my second choice.
Cripes - it's still snowing here in Colorado.
21.
sitka,
Same problem here. I haven't seen any energy bulbs that work with dimmer bulbs which don't seem to work with flourescent lights either.
I did find some that work with three-way lamps that have switches rather than the touch types. However, they didn't work with one of our lamps but did with the other.
Joan, yes, you're quite right. Why can't s/o outside do it?
howdy all! lots of good news but sadly it doesn't outweigh the bad news... yet. please begin to bring 'em home NOW, dammit and please dems call for an impartial investigation on rove et al because the dude that is doing the investigation, Scott Bloch, IS UNDER INVESTIGATION HIMSELF right now!
The Office of Personnel Management's inspector general has been investigating allegations by current and former OSC employees that Special Counsel Scott J. Bloch retaliated against underlings who disagreed with his policies--by, among other means, transferring them out of state--and tossed out legitimate whistle-blower cases to reduce the office backlog. Bloch denies the accusations, saying that under his leadership the agency has grown more efficient and receptive to whistle-blowers.

*********** LISTENER - if you pop on here, I'm running late but will be there in a while - weird day!. don't wait for me to order. : )
Rain here all day and from the same big storm as Denver.Meanwhile no corn is planted yet, anywhere around here. The ethanol plants will be nervous next week, and the markets will yo yo. Does "rain means grain" if the seed doesn't make it into the ground? You won't see me for a few days when the sun next comes out.
Go Darcy!
Good luck, Phil. I feel for all you farmers right now. I hope our snow doesn't head your way. It's so wet and heavy.
