Urgent Action: Stop Further Media Consolidation!

This is very urgent. Dec. 11 is the deadline to contact FCC. Let's inundate them with contacts to stop this madness; it worked last time with Powell. There's a new, even more arrogant Chairman, but if enough of us contact him...

There Is Movement In Congress To Restrain The Runaway F.C.C. If We Will Support It Yes, we know there is a holiday coming up fast. But despite mounting and unanimous public opposition, FCC Chairman Kevin J. Martin is trying to rush through essentially the same further media consolidation into the hands of fewer and fewer giant corporations, which was overturned by public pressure in 2003.

A bipartisan bill has already been introduced in Congress, The Media Ownership Act of 2007 (S.2332), to stop this rash and harmful action. At a public hearing (with the bare minimum advance legal notice) in Seattle on Nov. 9, presumptively to hear citizen input, Martin turned a deaf ear to a thousand protesting voices, and announced the next business day he was going to plow ahead with his destructive plan. FCC Commissioners Adelstein and Copps were appalled at Martin's obliviousness to the public interest, aiming to push through his gutting of current rules by December 11, just a couple weeks off. S.2332 would start by requiring a full and fair 90 days for the public to comment on any such proposed rule changes. It would also require protections for localism and diversity of ownership, including female and minorities.

I live in a part of the world where I don't have access to tv so I'm not able to see A Christmas Story and can't make up my own mind why A Christmas Story could be first.

you remember when I went on a crusade to get high speed internet access? On my road?
Well,
I failed. My State Representative is not engaged in that subject.
What really upset me was when I received her Newsletter where she proudly proclaimed that she can now have High Speed Internet Access.
She also said that she will continue to complain (to whom?) that not all have access.

high speed internet is being installed in remote areas down our way...in fact the cable guys and us road crew guys are in each others way all the time lately...same is not happening up there?
On topic...the airways must be returned to the public...the corporations don't own them!!!

This very sad article is from this week's Newsweek email. This guy says we're done for economically. To quote my hero (or one of them) David Walker from the article:

No, it's not happening up here.
I got a preliminary estimate from Comcast.
It said that it would cost ~$ 40,000 to bring High Speed to me.
It also said that if I would find 14 others to sign up it would cost $50 each.
I collected over 20 signatures.
Then I got an actual estimate of $80,000
But the bummer was: If I would find 14 others to sign up it would cost $ 2548 each.
That's where I got stumped.
The cost of the project doubled (the reason given made sense) but the individual contribution incrcreased more than 5000%
Too cool for school! Play the word game and 'earn' rice for the hungry donated by advertisers (Bloomberg, Itunes, eg)

I'll look into it for you. Basically every road that is maintained by the town I work for is having high speed installed at no added cost...just you basic fee for signing on from my understanding. I thought this was happening state wide.
I'll get back to you.
