Pasadena DFA Takes a Stand for Light Rail
Linked to groups: DFA Pasadena
Pasadena DFA had their Chapter meeting last week and used it as an opportunity to get behind a local issue. It's progressive, community-oriented, and will make a lot of people's lives in the San Gabriel Valley better - light rail.
This past Thursday Pasadena DFA got together to hear Susan Hoder, Director of Public Affairs, Metro Gold Line Foothills Extension Construction Authority. She explained how their group needs to generate public comment and support before 4/24 - when the LA Metropolitan Transit Authority Board meets to decide if the San Gabriel Valley's Gold Line light rail extension gets put on the Long Range Transportation Plan.
It makes accounting sense to do this because the $80 million involved for this extension will buy us $320 million in federal support. It makes community sense because we have a growing traffic problem on our 210 freeway that runs across the whole San Gabriel Valley.
Our group wrote up about 20 hand written letters of support on the spot for this and committed to sending members to that board meeting later this month!

To learn more about this issue and get involved:

and
Our agenda wasn't limited to this though. We talked about Russ Warner's congressional campaign for the 26th CD here in California and got 10 people signed up to volunteer for our upcoming DFA day at campaign HQ on Saturday April 26th 10-4 p.m.!
http://www.warnerforcongress.com/ - for more information on his campaign
and
http://tiny.cc/AvDdm - for more information on how to get to his HQ and join us 4/26
We discussed our tabling event at the Rose Bowl on Sunday 4/13. It's our first one for this spring and thanks to Patrick Burns' leadership it will no doubt have been a good action in our community. We'll post more on this in a separate blog entry.
We concluded the meeting with a couple of additional issues that are on the horizon for our community.
Altadena Town Council elections June 8th
(more info on the Town Council - http://www.altadenatowncouncil.org/)
and
Propositions 98 and 99 are on California's June 3, 2008 ballot and we need to educate voters on how to vote on them
(more information here - http://www.no98yes99.com/)
We have a lot to be proud of as a group. We need more of our membership's involvement if we want to make a bigger impact and take on more issues. If you've not been to a meeting, think about joining us in May. Feel free to reach out to our chapter leader - Patrick Briggs - pbriggs@greeneggsandham.org , if you want to find out more about us.
Thank you Maddie for doing such a fine job organizing our April DFA chapter meeting. Thanks also to our fine steering committee. Outstanding work!

The Gold Line speaker was fascinating - she has been working so diligently for this cause and is very committed - she really knew the the ins and outs, the political and the technical - and was so enthusiastic - it was inspiring! I wrote two letters. :)
thanks for sharing.i will pay attention to it

Good morning, everybody
Talk about re-inventing the wheel! Here we're going for the whole cart.
It's 4:24 AM and it's gotten cold again and I can't get my eyes to stay open. LOL
Yes, this is impeachment week in NH. Have you all read the autopsy report on the Iraqi left hanging to die dangling from his wrists? I've archived it on Hannah.

Perhaps better not to have eaten.
Fortunately, although Tom Engelhardt thinks we're creating a host of people bent on revenge,I think their faith prohibits revenge against anyone but the immediate perpetrators of injury. They blame Allah for the really bad stuff--must have been displeased to let Satan loose on the world. Small comfort.
bitter is an interesting word. Bitter fruit can be made palatable. It just takes a bit of effort. In PA, where there are a lot of Germans, bitter is sure to resonnate with bitten, which is to ask nicely for something or seek help. It's not a word that assigns cause. It refers to a condition that just is. In that it resembles right and wrong and is, essentially, indisputable. So, it was not a good idea to try to dispute it.
But, it did get Hillary free media at a time when she can't afford ads. Wonder how much longer that account can be milked. One would guess that eventually the media will catch on that, unlike the stain on the blue dress, there's nothing there.
Ms. Zheng, BTW, is a commercial spammer.
good morning! how about a laugh to start your day? I had missed this from Jon Stewart last week:
Ouch! The Daily Show's Eviscerating "Documentary" About Fox Newshttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/04/11/smackdown-the-emdaily-sho_n_96185.html
I am starting spring cleanup today if in fact we have our first day of spring here, as soon as it warms up enough things aren't frozen down, lol, I have little piles of gravel everywhere from snow pushing days. I'll be back with a shout out to donna and thankful who helped with tornado cleanup two years ago .
the bitter truth for Hillary is that she overplayed her hand
it was a perfect chance for a brief reference and let the MSM do there thing, but by her taking up the cause brought the spotlight of elitism on her, and then forced a look at the underlying issue where Obama has the upper hand
this episode will destroy the Republican attack line for fall that McCain is in touch but Obama isn't
that will just draw laughs
pathological there/their switches in my postings, must have been a spring fever day when they covered that in English class
hope teachers got the knowledge crammed in before this week's thoughts turned to the upcoming prom night for the kids
no high school kids on my payroll right now, except for a level headed girl that helps my wife with the babies on the weekend and she says she is coming to work the next morning
along with guns and God, prom night is a big deal in the rust belt

Nico PitneyThe Huffington PostBill Clinton Flashback: "All These Economically Insecure White People...Are Scared To Death"April 13, 2008 02:41 PM
As the rumination continues over Barack Obama's comments about economically-depressed small town voters, statements made by Bill Clinton on the same topic -- uttered while he was running for president in 1991 -- have now surfaced.
"The reason (George H. W. Bush's tactic) works so well now is that you have all these economically insecure white people who are scared to death," Clinton was quoted saying by the Los Angeles Times in September 1991.
A couple months later, Joe Klein, writing for the Sunday Times, reported that Clinton made the following remarks:
"You know, he [Bush] wants to divide us over race. I'm from the South. I understand this. This quota deal they're gonna pull in the next election is the same old scam they've been pulling on us for decade after decade after decade. When their economic policies fail, when the country's coming apart rather than coming together, what do they do? They find the most economically insecure white men and scare the living daylights out of them. They know if they can keep us looking at each other across a racial divide, if I can look at Bobby Rush and think, Bobby wants my job, my promotion, then neither of us can look at George Bush and say, 'What happened to everybody's job? What happened to everybody's income? What ... have ... you ... done ... to ... our ... country?'"

White women begin to turn away from Hillary Clinton By David Lightman | McClatchy Newspapers- Posted on Sunday, April 13, 2008
LEVITTOWN, Pa. — Like many women over 50, Paula Houwen was eager to vote for Hillary Clinton for president.
"I was impressed when she was first lady. She wasn't the country's trophy wife," the 56-year-old suburban Philadelphia pharmacist recalled.
Today, though, Houwen's no longer a Clinton fan.
"I do not like the way Hillary Clinton has run her campaign," she said.

Obama, in his critique of Hillary is playing with fire........he is forgetting, he will NEED her votes in Novemeber.............sometimes I think these so called "professional" politicians are quite immature................I cannot fathom JFK or FDR ever acting as childish as some of these people today..............
There are many Americans that like him, but wish not to be part of the overly loud, voisterous church congregation.................
How far we have declined...................
I don't know anything about the specific proposal for Pasadena, but I'm in favor of as much mass transit as possible, including light rail.
There's a threshold of mass transit an area needs to have before people start realizing what they have, and how they can use it. When I was in small market news, I used to see towns and small cities buy a bus or two, run it on one loop, once an hour, on the main streets, and wonder why people don't use it. On the other hand, I've seen very well off, very white collar (the people who they say never use mass transit) areas where they implemented a mass transit system of small buses that linked to rail, were low cost to the user and convenient to walk to the stops, and it was all they could do to run enough buses for everyone who wanted to use them.
Mass transit isn't free, but neither are roads. We need to think about mass transit as we do roads, as a service we provide the community for the benefit of the community, not as a profit center. Nobody expects the roads to break even.

OBAMA PA SPORTSMEN PUSH BACK
Posted: Sunday, April 13, 2008 7:05 PM
by Domenico Montanaro
From NBC’s Cherelle Kantey
In this afternoon’s conference call sponsored by the Pennsylvania Sportsmen and Sportswomen for Obama, small-town politicians said the latest attacks from the Clinton campaign are shameless, aimed at creating divisions in their communities.
“Trying to turn small-town Pennsylvanians against each other for political gain is shameless,” said Mayor John Fetterman of Braddock, Pa. Fetterman blasted the New York senator for trying to win votes by patronizing gun owners, a move he said shows a willingness to win at all costs.
“I think it's really discouraging and tacky to see Hillary Clinton pandering as if she's a gun owner,” said Fetterman. “I think it demonstrates and represents willingness to say anything and everything to get elected.”
Rep. Dan Surra (D-PA) said he shares the frustration of the constituents he represents.
“I represent the people that Barack Obama was talking about, that people who have lost their jobs,” Surra said. "I think he understands, there is a frustration out there.”
...
At the conclusion of the call, the sportsmen made it clear that they intend to support Obama, who they say has genuine interest in the concerns of small-town communities.
“Barack Obama has reached out to sportsmen; he’s reached out to blue-collar people,” Surra said. “And I think the reason it’s being blown up like it is, because they don’t want to talk about who can really bring the change that we need.”

Its 8.49am.........based on what Linda? Democrats have a tendency to fall into this trap every 4 years it seems..................Dukakis was 18 poits ahead of Bush in 1988, Gore was ahead of Bush, and Kerry led Bush2 I believe.................
Mccain will play it safe........draped in flags and war medals, flag lapel pins and fighter pilot stories plus POW tales of bravery will captivate the imagination of the populace..............
I'm tired of a person's views being labeled "condescending" just because they have a different life experience.
Obama wasn't at all condescending. He tossed the word "religion" in the mix because he grew up pretty much without one and today finds church relevant primarily as an engine of social change. He was using the word to refer to people who go to church as if it's a circle of covered wagons, valiantly defending against outward foes.
Neither of which is how I, personally, view the church, but I have seen it viewed in both those ways by many different people.
Nope, he was no more condescending than assuming small town people don't have computers.

Im not running for President...........
Good morning. Go Pasadena!

Hillary has the Democratic party machine behind her in PA. Barack has Bob Casey and Patrick Murphy. I think Casey is a tremendous help to Barack - he seems very authentic. He seems to just tell it like it is. Rendell just seems like a smarmy hack to me - always has especially when he was out there trashing Dean last time around.
Mike wrote "Obama, in his critique of Hillary is playing with fire........he is forgetting, he will NEED [Clintoon's] votes in Novemeber."
This is confounding. You told us that Clinton will be the Democratic nominee, so I'm assuming you meant to write that Clinton is forgetting she will need Obama's votes in November.

I think what's really confounding Mike is this news:

Just remember he said "not this time". He is not going to take the crap and the people are tired of all the shee ite that we have been force fed.
So go vote for Annie Oakley. Did you know she died recently?
I thought that Hillary was rather condescending to the intelligence of the average voter - by thinking her lies and spin would work. she is so out of touch - she would have done better to stick to the truth of what he said. Obama may be taking some out of their comfort zone, but these are good conversations to have. as for the crap about this only comes out when he's in 'liberal' circles, perhaps some of these investigative reporters should read his books - he realyed the same thing in his writings, many years ago.

At times in his books and in his speeches, he has spoken about the various societal disadvantages for AAs but he has also criticized self-defeatist personal behavior amongst some in the AA community (ie. those black male teenagers that ostricize other black male teenagers who seriously want to excel in school, that criticism can come in the words like "you're acting white"; hip-hop music derogatory to women; etc.).Well, to the rural (largely) white community, comes the talk about being bitter -- bitter about various societal disadvantages for often poor or barely middle class whites. But he has also mentioned about personal behavior in which distractions from one's problems come in the form of drinking, gun usage, religion, whatever. In other words, the real problems of the economy etc. don't get seriously addressed, so instead try to forget about them by getting distracted/getting one's esteem up through the power of a gun, of religious salvation, of the atmosphere of a bar, etc.Maybe I'm analyzing things too much but Obama doesn't neatly fit into a liberal nor a conservative box, and that why he appeals to so many different type of Americans, who really want to start being empowered again.
