New Iraqi Doc In Parsippany

The award winning documentary THE BLOOD OF MY BROTHER will be the premiere film for the new FILMS FOR THOUGHT series sponsored by St. Gregory's Episcopal Church in Parsippany on Saturday October 28. Director Andrew Berends will add to the evening by attending the screening and holding a Q&A session at the film's conclusion.

THE BLOOD OF MY BROTHER is the first film to explore the Iraqi conflict from the point of view of average Iraqis. The New York Times calls it; "Intimate and Hair-raising." Time Out New York raves that THE BLOOD OF MY BROTHER is "Fascinating...a brave film." The Chicago Sun Times writes; "Invaluable...imparts a you are there atmosphere."

Berends spent six months in Baghdad in 2004 and 2005. His film chronicles the struggle of one Shia family to survive the death of their eldest son as the insurgency swells around them. The film contrasts the intimate details of daily life in Baghdad with the broader spectacle of a country at war.

THE BLOOD OF MY BROTHER premiered at this year's Tribeca Film Festival. It was also featured at The American Film Institute's Silver Docs Festival in Washington D.C. before being released theatrically nationwide. The film is not rated but with some graphic scenes of urban warfare, it is probably not suitable for children under the age of thirteen.

FILMS FOR THOUGHT is a monthly series that focuses on controversial and topical issues. In November, AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH, Al Gore's exploration of global warming will be the featured title. Program director Bruce Frigeri described the series as; "an effort to provide stimulating films that will provide insight, perspective and entertainment for our community." Saint Gregory's Episcopal Church is located at 480 S. Beverwyck Road in Parsippany. The evening will begin at 7:30. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Admission is five dollars. Call 973-884-4884 for additional information.
