Reminder - DC Gets a Vote? Join Eleanor Holmes Norton Wednesday Night

Dear Member,

REMINDER NOTICE

This Wednesday night, join DC Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton at DC for Democracy's June 7th MeetUp.

www.democracyinaction.com/dia/or...

Ms. Norton will be on hand to discuss her recently introduced (and bi-partisan) legislation to give DC representation in the US House of Representatives. Virginia Congressman Tom Davis has worked closely with Ms. Norton to craft the bill and the proposal has passed his Government Reform committee.

But where is the proposal headed next? Supports say the stars have aligned to deliver voting representation to DC. Detractors say it doesn't go far enough and sells full representation short. Hear straight from Ms. Norton about how far she thinks the bill can go in the House and how you can help make voting rights a reality.

Urgent Call: Join Day of Action

Dear Member,

Join DC for Democracy in a Day of Action!

Tomorrow, Saturday, May 13th, we'll take to the National Mall to get more people involved in our Change the Course campaign to force a full and honest debate on the floor of Congress. There is an exhibit on the Mall titled "Eyes Wide Open" highlighting the human cost of the war in Iraq - so we'll have a friendly audience and possibly a lot of out-of-town visitors that can go home and start organizing to get their member to sign the discharge petition H. Res. 543 and get our Congress talking again.

Join MeetUp: DC Rent Control Changing

Dear Member,

Join us at MeetUp this Wednesday night! The topic: Affordable Housing - Will DC Change Rent Control and Rent Subsidy Programs?

RSVP for MeetUp - www.democracyinaction.com/dia/or...

We'll be joined by two guest speakers, and affordable housing experts: Angie Rodgers of the DC Fiscal Policy Institute and Janet Brown (invited).

At this year's Summit, you identified affordable housing as one of your top issues for DC for Democracy to work on. The timing couldn't be more critical as the DC Council is considering two proposals to change the rent control laws for DC landlords and tenants, and establish a rent subsidy program for lower-income residents. Votes on both plans are less than a month away.

Click Here to Sign Up Today - www.democracyinaction.com/dia/or...

However you want to describe DC's housing market ("red-hot," "white-hot," "cooling" or "ridiculous"), it's more than evident that lower income residents have been left behind and are struggling. Just one example is the DC Housing Authority - where the agency serves 20,000 families through public housing and voucher programs, but has reached capacity and has over 52,000 families on its waiting list. As the Bush Administration continues to cut its support for these programs, the District is looking to step up and fill the gap. Find out how, and what you can do to make it happen!

Click Here to RSVP for Wednesday night's MeetUp - www.democracyinaction.com/dia/or... Ben's Chili Bowl, 1213 U Street, NW (Metro: U Street - green line), 7:00 - 8:30 pm.

See you on Wednesday night,

Join us for MeetUp this Wednesday night! We've got an exciting agenda set up for you. Click Here for details and let us know you're coming - Link

1. MeetUp Joe-mentum? Who's got the big mo' now?

As you may know, progressive Democrat Ned Lamont is giving Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman a primary election challenge. Progressives in the state (and from around the country) have Lamont running strong in the primary and standing up to the status quo. As a special guest, Aldon Hynes, senior campaign advisor to Mr. Lamont, will be there to talk about why progressives are challenging Senator Lieberman and answer your questions about his campaign and the tactics of challenging an incumbent Democrat.

Also on the agenda are updates and actions on the Living Wage and the School Modernization Campaign. Two of our biggest social justice campaigns will have their final vote before Council on March 7th. See how you can help with just one week left in this fight.

Finally, We'll be talking about the nationwide campaign we have recently launched with Democracy for America called "Change the Course," organizing a grassroots lobbying effort to spark a Congressional debate on the Iraq War.
