Jahana Hayes is perhaps the best example of the power of a great education. The daughter of a young mother who suffered from substance abuse, and a teen mother herself, Hayes says that “education saved her life,” and as a high school social studies teacher and the 2016 National Teacher of the Year, she has saved the lives of so many students by providing a quality education.

Hayes is now running for Congress in Connecticut’s 5th District, and if elected, will be the first African-American Democrat and the first African-American woman to represent the state. A lifelong Connecticut resident and a passionate, energetic, and committed leader, Jahana Hayes will ensure that all residents in the district are represented, and will be a champion for equity and equality within her district, and in Congress.

A former teacher currently serving as a school administrator, Hayes will be a fighter for strong educational policy, demanding that all children from all communities have access to a high quality education, advocating for college affordability, ensuring open access to more students, and challenging measures that divert public funding from our schools.

Hayes will also be a champion for the issues that affect children and families, including Medicare for All, common sense legislation to prevent gun violence, passing the DREAM Act, and addressing the equity gap that impacts communities of color.
