Alderman - 5th Ward
Korynna Lopez, running for 5th Ward Alderman, has dedicated her career to advocating for children, community, and justice. Born in Berwyn, Korynna attended St. Leonard Parish School and graduated from J. Sterling Morton West High School. Korynna graduated from DePaul University with dual bachelor’s degrees in communication and media and sociology. Korynna lives with her mother, brother and rescue dog, Chance. Korynna is the youngest candidate for alderman in Berwyn’s history.
Beginning in college, Korynna worked toward criminal justice reform through policy research and advocacy. Along with a number of young leaders from Cook County, she contributed to two reports of recommendations for juvenile justice system reform, met with county stakeholders and helped design the website, expunge.io, which is aimed at helping raise awareness of juvenile record expungement and guide individuals through the process.
Korynna’s work was so well received that she was offered a full-time staff position after college at the not-for-profit organization, Illinois Justice Project. Here, she continues to focus on justice policy and reform efforts that engage communities and stakeholders in Chicago, Cook County, and Illinois. In addition, she is the president of the Illinois Juvenile Justice Commission’s Youth Advisory Board. While growing up, the Berwyn community cultivated and instilled values of honesty environmental responsibility, animal advocacy, compassion, friendship, determination and equality within Korynna.
