Joseph “Joey” Johnston grew up in north Berwyn and attended St. Odilo Catholic School. After graduating from St. Odilo, he enrolled at St. Joseph College Preparatory High School in Westchester. During his freshman year, he became involved with Sokol Tabor in Berwyn. In addition to being an active gym participant, he served as an assistant instructor for younger groups, volunteered at Sokol events, and helped to organize Sokol functions. He graduated from St. Joseph High School achieving honor roll status during all four years. After receiving a scholarship from the American Sokol organization, he attended the University of North Dakota (UND). While at UND, he was active in many student organizations, serving as president of the student chapter of the American Meteorological Society and vice president of the UND Ten Percent Society. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in atmospheric sciences, he began his graduate studies at UND. He completed two years as a research and teaching assistant for the department of atmospheric sciences before beginning his career with a renewable energy company in North Dakota. He relocated to the Chicago area in 2009 to join a local renewable energy company, and in 2014, he returned to Berwyn to be closer to friends and family.
