Democracy for America responds to sexual assault allegations against Sen. Al Franken

Earlier today, broadcaster and model Leann Tweeden documented in an extended write-up on KABC’s website that U.S. Senator Al Franken had “kissed and groped me without my consent.”

Democracy for America, led by the four women on its directing team, issued the following statement in response to these sexual assault allegations against Sen. Franken:

"We believe Leann Tweeden and thank her for having the courage to share her story.  We are profoundly disturbed and disappointed by Senator Al Franken's behavior.  While we are glad that Senator Franken has apologized, expressed remorse, and been publicly supportive of additional investigations, those responses are nowhere near enough to repair the harm he did to Ms. Tweeden and the trust he has lost within the progressive community.

"Sexual harassment, assault, abuse, and the exploitation of women are unacceptable and have no place in our politics. Women deserve better, the progressive movement deserves better, and our country deserves better and we're committed to working with others to realizing that standard.” -- Mia Moore, Chief of Staff; Kristina Powell, Finance Director; Mari Schimmer, Organizing Director; Annie Weinberg, Electoral Director, Democracy for America

Democracy for America cheers big wins for city candidates in Tuesday elections

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) celebrated a series of big wins in mayoral and city council races from Charlotte, NC to Manchester, NH that occurred this week and will continue building progressive power across the country.

Earlier this year, DFA committed to investing half a million dollars in an effort to identify, recruit, train, staff, and elect a new generation of city officials -- mayors, city council leaders, school board members, state’s attorneys and more - who are ready to fight for racial and economic justice by winning people-powered campaigns.

This week alone, DFA-endorsed municipal candidates won seven elections bringing the current total number of DFA city wins in 2017 to 20.   Over past three years, DFA has supported a total of 97 municipal campaigns and won crucial elections from Seattle to Tucson to Chicago.

Statement from Democracy for America Chair Jim Dean on the PAC’s current 2017 city-level victories:

“All across the country, from providing safe harbor to immigrant neighbors to the racial justice reforms they’re pushing for in local policing, progressives are making America’s cities bastions of resistance to the Trump regime and ensuring that the leadership of their communities are reflective of and responsive to the people they serve.

“Given our cities’ long history of progressive leadership, Democracy for America decided to invest big in electing a new generation of city officials and, after less than a year, those investments are paying off in history-making victories all across the country.

Just this week, DFA-endorsed candidate Vi Lyles became the first Black woman to be elected Mayor of Charlotte, NC; Joyce Craig, broke through another glass ceiling to become the first woman elected Mayor of Manchester, NH; civil rights attorney Larry Krasner won a game-changing race for District Attorney in the city Philadelphia; and Ben Chin is now headed to a runoff election in December with even more votes than his near win in 2015.

“At DFA, we believe that cities can’t be an afterthought for major Democratic institutions, and they can’t be an old boys network of the corporate Wall Street wing. Our cities must be the labs of progressive policy where we can make a real difference in people’s lives, which is precisely why we’re so excited by the successes we’ve had in city-level races this week and throughout 2017.  Thanks to the hard work of the grassroots, a new generation of city leaders are emerging and winning elections and we can’t wait to work with them to deliver on their inclusive populist vision of a country where every American has the opportunity to build a life that is safe, thriving, and free.”  -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

Details of a few of DFA’s city-level victories this week:

  • Vi Lyles became the first Black woman ever to serve as Mayor of Charlotte, NC, trouncing a rightwing Republican with 59.9% of the vote. Since its pre-primary endorsement of Vi’s campaign, DFA mobilized members across North Carolina and nationally in support of the campaign’s field, fundraising, and media events; recruited over 1,663 donors to directly support the campaign, raising $11,540.83 in small dollar contributions; and provided the campaign with cutting-edge voter contact technology tools via our DFA Dialer program.
  • Larry Krasner won his District Attorney’s race in Philadelphia. In office, Krasner is set to be one of the country’s most progressive prosecutors with a commitment to ending the death penalty, ending cash bail, and fighting for police accountability and justice. Krasner’s win is a major victory for Black Lives Matter movement leaders in Philadelphia, one of America’s most incarcerated cities.
  • Joyce Craig became the first woman elected to serve as Mayor of Manchester, NH, defeating a four-term incumbent by 2,000 votes.
  • After a narrow, run-off loss in 2015 to a race-baiting Republican, millennial progressive Ben Chin won the first round of his race for Mayor of Lewiston, ME.

Other big, 2017 city-level victories for DFA:

  • Chokwe Lumumba won his race for Mayor of Jackson, MS by besting nine candidates in a hotly contested primary --  including a well-funded incumbent and a sitting State Senator -- and running on a bold platform of Black self-determination, economic and racial justice and community.
  • Aja Brown was re-elected Mayor of Compton, CA. As the youngest mayor ever to serve in the role, Brown defeated challengers in a primary and runoff and has led the way in fighting for good public schools, accessible transportation, affordable housing and criminal justice reform.
  • In Berywn, Illinois, DFA endorsed a winning slate of 9 municipal challengers to the entrenched political establishment, comprised primarily of first-time candidates, rank-and-file union members, four LGBTQ candidates, and six Latinxs in a rapidly diversifying municipality. The nine seat victory swept in a new city clerk and bold new leadership into Trusteeships, the City Council, and the Treasurer’s offices.
  • State Representative Cory Mason won his mayoral race in Racine, WI as a fighter for working families, defeating six primary opponents and one long-serving incumbent alderman in the October runoff.

DFA hails huge win for Manka Dhingra in WA special election to help flip WA State Senate

Tonight, DFA-endorsed candidate Manka Dhingra claimed a huge victory in a Washington state special election that has helped flip control of the State Senate and control of all three branches of state government to Democrats.

Democracy for America members invested big in Manka’s race running an $150,000 independent expenditure (IE) effort to support her campaign, featuring a multi-pass canvass program, online ads, direct mail, paid phone calls, and text messaging tightly targeting registered voters who voted for the first time in 2016 or have voted sporadically in previous elections.

Democracy for America’s Chair Jim Dean on Manka Dhingra’s game-changing victory in Washington State:

“Manka Dhingra’s victory tonight is a tremendous win for Eastside voters, the entire state of Washington, and progressive voters all across the country who understand the stakes of state elections like this one.

“With Manka Dhingra in the State Senate, Washingtonians not only will now have another strong, progressive voice in Olympia, they will have flipped control of a legislative chamber and won a state government united in its commitment to standing up to Donald Trump’s attacks on our healthcare, environment, education system, and immigrant communities.

“We were proud to pour everything we could into Manka’s race and we cannot wait to see how her vote in the State Senate helps Washington continue building on its legacy of national progressive leadership.” -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

Key facts about DFA’s comprehensive IE in support of Dhingra:

  • The IE's ads received more than 892,825 individual, in-district impressions across Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube and was watched at least 131,724 times over all three services.
  • As a part of paid field efforts, canvassers knocked on 13,888 doors and engaged in individual conversations with well over 4,000 targeted new or sporadic 45th district voters.
  • The IE's mail program sent 18,713 pieces, while its phone and texting programs contacted 5,459 voters and sent 4,179 individual messages, respectively.
  • DFA’s IE was done in close partnership with the State Government Citizens’ Campaign (SGCC) political action committee.

Democracy for America celebrates Justin Fairfax victory for Lt. Gov., 14 Delegate wins in Virginia

Tonight, DFA-endorsed candidate Justin Fairfax won his race for Lieutenant Governor in Virginia -- and, as of 9:54 pm ET, 14 of DFA’s 16 endorsed candidates for VA State House have also won.

Statement from Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director of Democracy for America, on Justin Fairfax’s victory and the rapidly growing number of victories in Virginia’s House of Delegates:

“Justin Fairfax’s historic win tonight is not only a huge victory for Virginians, it’s a big victory for anyone hungry for new leaders standing up to the wealthy and powerful and working toward racial and economic justice for every American.

“As just the second African-American to ever win statewide office in the Commonwealth of Virginia, Justin Fairfax has already made history just by winning this seat.  For Democrats, he’s also made history by showing doubters in Richmond and Washington that progressives dedicated to an inclusive populist political agenda can win big in Virginia.

“We were proud to support Justin Fairfax early in this contest, back him up to the very end, and we simply can’t wait to keep fighting shoulder-to-shoulder with him as Virginia’s next Lieutenant Governor.

“We are also celebrating several huge victories tonight among DFA-endorsed House of Delegates candidates including Jennifer Carroll Foy (VA-HD-2), Hala Ayala  (VA-HD-51), Wendy Gooditis (VA-HD-10), Chris Hurst (VA-HD-12), Elizabeth Guzman (VA-HD-31), David Reid (VA-HD-32), Mark Levine (VA-HD-45), Lashrecse Aird (VA-HD-63), Delores McQuinn (VA-HD-70) Jeff Bourne (VA-HD-71), Jennifer Boysko (VA-HD-86), Jeion Ward (VA-HD-92), and Marcia Price (VA-HD-95).

"Of particular note are the history-making victories of Danica Roem (VA-HD-13), who will be the nation’s first transgender state legislator, and Elizabeth Guzman (VA-HD-31), who will be the first Latina and one of the first first-generation immigrants to serve in the Virginia General Assembly.

“Virginians deserve a House of Delegates that represents their proud progressive values and tonight they got a huge step closer to realizing that goal.”  -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America

As a part of its 2017 “Purple to Blue” work in Virginia, Democracy for America:

  • Endorsed 19 candidates across the state, beginning in January, and began immediate support for strategy, field, fundraising and media
  • Delivered big with DFA Dialer. In partnership with Indivisible, Democracy for America led the country’s largest volunteer-led national calling program with more than 600,000 dials to mobilize sporadic Democratic Virginia voters, focusing on Black and Brown voters across the state
  • Led the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus Training, training 15 candidates and their campaign teams on the ground on expanding the electorate, voter targeting, win number strategy, field planning and more
  • Connected our members into on-the-ground canvassing, phonebanking, and fundraising events, in partnership with our local sister group, DC for Democracy

DFA announces end of “direct aid” for Northam in VA gubernatorial race after anti-immigrant comments

This afternoon, following comments backtracking from support for immigrant families, Democracy for America announced that it was no longer doing "any work to directly aid" Democrat Ralph Northam's Virginia campaign for Governor.

DFA never endorsed Northam in the Gubernatorial race, but, as a part of the coordinated campaign, is spearheading a grassroots calling program to mobilize Virginia voters up and down the ballot. In October, following news that Northam staffers had left Lt. Gov. candidate Justin Fairfax off canvass literature, DFA stopped asking voters or collecting data about Northam as a part of that calling program. Today, DFA decided to make this decision public.

Full statement from Charles Chamberlain, DFA's Executive Director, announcing the decision to end any direct support for Northam:

"Ralph Northam's gutless, politically senseless, and morally debased decision yesterday to openly backtrack on his commitment to standing up for immigrant families is a picture-perfect example of why Democracy for America never endorsed him in the primary and focused the entirety of our efforts in Virginia on down-ticket races, like Justin Fairfax's campaign for Lieutenant Governor.  It's also why, today, we're announcing that we will no longer do any work to directly aid Northam's gubernatorial efforts.

"Despite our profound reservations about Northam's commitment to the inclusive populist agenda Democrats need to embrace to win, following the conclusion of Virginia's Democratic primary, we have continued to work alongside the Virginia Democratic Coordinated campaign for our endorsed candidates, raise tens of thousands of dollars in grassroots donations, and make tens of thousands of calls to voters to expand the electorate.

"Those concerns proved justified when, a few weeks ago, the VA Democratic Coordinated campaign (dominated by Northam operatives) bought literature for canvassers that purposely left off Fairfax, who, if elected, would be just the second Black man to ever serve statewide office in the Commonwealth.  Following that racist action, we decided to remove Northam's name from the tens of thousands of volunteer Get-Out-the-Vote calls our members are making in Virginia, but, for the sake of Democratic comity, we refrained from publicly discussing that decision.

"However, after seeing Northam play directly into the hands of Republicans' racist anti-immigrant rhetoric on sanctuary cities, we refuse to be silent any longer and even remotely complicit in the disastrous, racist, and voter-turnout-depressing campaign Ralph Northam appears intent on running.

"The fight for racial and economic justice are core Democratic values, not talking points for convenient moments. This isn't some arbitrary purity test either.  Public dithering on basic issues of racial justice, like the need to protect immigrant families targeted by a bigoted Federal government, isn't just morally bankrupt, it's precisely why many Black, brown, and progressive white voters that should make up the base of reliable Democratic voters don't believe Democratic candidates have their backs and sit out elections.

"Let's be really clear: If Ralph Northam wins next Tuesday, it won't be because he publicly backtracked on his commitment to protecting immigrant families, but in spite of it.  And, if he loses, the blame should be placed squarely on the shoulders of the consultants who urged the campaign to cave on core Democratic values in the face of a virulently racist Republican campaign - and whose obsession with flipping white, Republican-leaning votes and ignoring voters of color has consistently failed.

"As we have from the start, we are committed to supporting DFA's endorsed candidates in Virginia through election day, but we cannot remain silent as an outdated faction of national and state Democratic Party staffers and consultants run the same old, broken, and racist playbook that lost Democrats over 1000 elected offices since 2008 and allowed a bigoted billionaire to squeak into the White House last Fall.  Our country and our party deserve much, much better." -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America

DFA is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC with 41,719 members in the Commonwealth of Virginia and one million members nationwide committed to taking on structural racism, income inequality, and money in politics.

In the 2017 election in Virginia, DFA has endorsed Justin Fairfax for Lt. Governor, John Bell for Sheriff, and Lashrecse Aird (VA-HD-63), Hala Ayala (VA-HD-51), Lamont Bagby (VA-HD-54), Jeff Bourne (VA-HD-71), Jennifer Boysko (VA-HD-86), Sheila Bynum-Coleman (VA-HD-62), Jennifer Carroll Foy (VA-HD-2), Wendy Gooditis (VA-HD-10), Elizabeth Guzman (VA-HD-31), Chris Hurst (VA-HD-12), Mark Levine (VA-HD-45), Delores McQuinn (VA-HD-70), Marcia Price (VA-HD-95), David Reid (VA-HD-32), Danica Roem (VA-HD-13), Donte Tanner (VA-HD-40), and Jeion Ward (VA-HD-92) for the House of Delegates.

Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $40 million and made more than 11.1 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 9185 progressive candidates nationwide.

TAX RESPONSE: Politicians duped by Trump’s billionaire tax cut deserve “a humiliating defeat”

Today, Trump’s Republican Party is finally releasing the details of the Trump Billionaire Tax Cut and it’s as bone-crushingly bad for working families and good for the richest of the rich as expected.

Here’s a reaction to and a pledge to fight back against Trump’s Billionaire Tax Cut from Democracy for America (DFA) Chair Jim Dean:

"Much like the fight against his multiple attempts to strip millions of their healthcare earlier this year, the battle against Donald Trump's billionaire tax cuts will make it exceedingly clear which Washington politicians, both Republicans and Democrats, are doing the bidding of the mega-rich 1% and which leaders are fighting for everyone else.

Donald Trump is and always has been a bigoted fraud desperate for the affection of the champagne-swilling moneyed class, so it should come as no surprise that the tax plan his party has produced is a mammoth giveaway to millionaires, billionaires, and multinational corporations.  And, for Trump, the idea that all this will come at the expense of a single parent working three jobs to pay for his college degree or a student struggling with her medical debt is a feature, not a bug.

"The simple fact is this:  The tax plan Donald Trump's Republican Party has put forward today is designed to fund the second homes and private jets of the richest of the rich and make it easier for Republicans to destroy the Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid systems millions of people have paid into their whole lives and need to survive.  Period. End of Story.

"The notion that Donald Trump's billionaire tax cut is focused on working and middle-class families is a dangerous joke and any Washington politician who buys it, especially Democrats, deserves a humiliating defeat at the ballot box.

“Democracy for America members are committed to doing everything we can to defeat Donald Trump’s billionaire tax cut and holding accountable any individual in Washington who furthers it.” -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

Both the 30-second and extended version of the ads were produced by Gum Spirits Productions for DFA in close partnership with the State Government Citizens’ Campaign (SGCC) political action committee.  The targeted social media and pre-roll video online ad buy for the 30-second spot was facilitated by Solidarity Strategies.

Democracy for America backs Kevin de León in California U.S. Senate race

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of State Senator Kevin de León immediately after he declared his candidacy for U.S. Senate in California.  De León, the current President pro tempore of the California State Senate, will face four-term Senator Dianne Feinstein in the June primary.

This is DFA’s first endorsement of a 2018 U.S. Senate primary challenger.

Earlier this year, DFA has endorsed incumbent Senators Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) in their respective 2018 reelection fights.

Democracy for America has 298,529 members in the state of California and more than one million members nationwide.

DFA Executive Director Charles Chamberlain on the decision to endorse De León in the U.S. Senate primary campaign in California:

“Californians made their state a bright blue beacon of resistance to Donald Trump’s hate-fueled agenda, and they deserve two Senators who will be relentless allies in their battle to stand up to the White House and take bold action on social, racial, and economic justice.

“From his work as a young community organizer battling the anti-immigrant Proposition 187 to his leadership in the push for a bold single-payer healthcare plan in the California State Senate, state Senator Kevin de León has spent his life fighting for justice and that’s why Democracy for America members couldn’t be more excited to support his campaign for the U.S. Senate.

“When Trump became President, de León didn’t ask people to sit back and wait, hoping maybe Trump would someday turn out OK. He immediately began working to pass policies that would help the people most immediately affected by Trump’s bigoted, greedy policies.

“The simple fact is this: We won't defeat Trump and his Republican Party with corporate Democrats pushing Republican-lite policies and weak leadership. We win when candidates offer a progressive vision for America and fight to make it happen. Kevin de León has proven he will do both and we can’t wait to see him do it in the U.S. Senate.” -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America

DFA’s decision to endorse Kevin de León follows a “Pulse Poll” of DFA’s California members that found that 63% of respondents want a progressive leader to challenge Senator Feinstein in the 2018 U.S. Senate election.

Quote from Sen. Kevin de León on receiving DFA’s endorsement:

“Earning the early support of Democracy for America’s grassroots members isn’t just an honor, it’s a reflection of my commitment to running a people-powered campaign for the U.S. Senate that’s focused on big, bold populist progressive ideas and the active confrontation of Donald Trump’s bigoted agenda.” -- Sen. Kevin de León, U.S. Senate candidate

As the first Latino elected President pro Tempore of the California State Senate in more than 130 years, Sen. Kevin de León has been a leader in the fight to pass single-payer healthcare through the California State Senate; a fierce champion in the battle against climate change; and a stalwart ally for immigration justice who got his start in politics organizing citizens against the virulently anti-immigrant Proposition 187.  If elected, Sen. De León would be the first Latino to represent California in the U.S. Senate.  He’s committed not only to standing up to Donald Trump’s bigoted right-wing agenda, but building on California’s tradition of progressive leadership and leading the fight for big, bold populist progressive ideas.

Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $40 million and made more than 11.1 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 915 progressive candidates nationwide.

DFA launches $150,000 campaign backing Manka Dhingra in Washington State Senate special election

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) launched the first phase of an $150,000 independent expenditure campaign to get-out-the-vote for Democrat Manka Dhingra in a critical 2017 special election (LD-45) that could determine control of the Washington State Senate.

The comprehensive IE campaign will feature a multi-pass canvas program, direct mail, phone calls, text messages, and paid media targeting registered voters in Washington’s 45th Legislative District who voted for the first time in 2016 or have voted sporadically in previous elections.

In a state legislative district that Donald Trump lost in 2016 by a massive 37 points, DFA’s IE program aims to help voters see that this fall’s special election is a critical opportunity to make sure their State Senate can stand with Washington’s Governor and State Assembly as fully united front against Trump’s bigoted and hate-fueled agenda.

Quote from DFA Communications Director Neil Sroka on the group’s support for Manka Dhingra’s race for Washington State Senate:

“A dedicated public servant and 22-year Eastside resident, Manka Dhingra will be a strong, progressive voice in the State Senate who will ensure Washington’s government stands up to Donald Trump’s attacks on our healthcare, environment, education system, and immigrant communities.

“All across the country, people are looking for ways to stand up to Donald Trump’s bigoted, hate-fueled agenda.  We’re excited to run this campaign in support of Manka Dhingra to make sure that every Eastside voter understands the tremendous opportunity they have this November to fight back and stand up for opportunity, progress, and fairness for everyone.”  -- Neil Sroka, Communications Director, Democracy for America

DFA’s multi-pass canvas program started knocking its very first doors this week and will continue through election day, while the other components of the program (e.g. direct mail, calls, text and paid media) will hit the ground in the weeks ahead.

Democracy for America is working with Fieldworks on its canvass program; Solidarity Strategies on mail, phone calls, texts and media buying; and Gum Spirits Productions on paid media production.  DFA has also worked closely on the conception, design, and execution of this IE campaign with the volunteer leaders of the recently formed State Government Citizens’ Campaign (SGCC) political action committee.

DFA, which endorsed Manka Dhingra in May, is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC with 74,992 members in the state of Washington and one million members nationwide committed to taking on structural racism, income inequality, and money in politics.

Take the pledge: Volunteer to help defeat NRA candidates

How is Congress responding to last night's terror attack in Las Vegas? By getting ready to pass a bill to make it easier to buy silencers -- a top priority for the NRA.

Republican elected officials offer their thoughts and prayers. They lower flags to half-staff. But they will never act to stop gun violence and mass shootings, because they're in league with the NRA.

The NRA is unrepentant. They and their allies in Congress don't think there's anything wrong with what happened in Las Vegas last night. In fact, they are doubling down in support of laws that enable white men like Stephen Paddock to use guns to terrorize their families and communities.

Congress has caved to the NRA after every mass shooting this decade, from Sandy Hook to San Bernardino, from Umpqua Community College in Oregon to the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, and so many more. They will keep doing so until we defeat them at the ballot box.

DFA members are mobilizing to defeat the NRA and elect candidates who will confront gun violence with legislation and funding for gun safety and enforcement. This includes crucial elections in Virginia next month, where the NRA is spending big to defeat our candidates. Can you help?

Will you pledge to volunteer to help DFA defeat NRA-backed candidates across the country in 2017 and 2018 -- and replace them with leaders who will stand up to the NRA and fight gun violence?

Democracy for America endorses Derrick Crowe in Texas U.S. House race

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Derrick Crowe in his race for the U.S. Congress in Texas’ 21st congressional district.

Democracy for America has 79,226 members in Texas and more than one million members nationwide.

Chair Jim Dean on DFA’s decision to back Derrick Crowe for Congress:

“Derrick Crowe’s campaign for Congress shows that standing up for American values like liberty and justice for all leads directly to policies like climate change action, Medicare For All, and tuition-free college. He’s showing Democrats that the path to victory in Texas isn’t in chasing Republican votes, but in championing a bold, progressive vision for the future.

“Derrick doesn’t just talk about fighting for progressive values--he puts himself on the line. He went to jail in protest of the GOP attempt to slash health coverage. He’s stood with the Latinx community against Republican attacks like S.B. 4 and the DACA repeal. And, he’s taking progressive populism back to its rural roots on issues like broadband Internet access.

“Derrick’s small-town background, Capitol Hill experience, and grassroots organizing history will make him Rep. Lamar Smith’s worst nightmare. We’re proud to back this ‘nerd for science’ as he takes on Congress’ worst climate science denier.” -- Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America

Quote from Derrick Crowe on receiving DFA’s endorsement:

“We're taking on Big Money and entrenched special interests in my district, and that's why Democracy for America's support is so important.

“Our campaign is fighting corporate power with people power, and DFA's support as a strong, progressive, grassroots network will be indispensable. Together, we will unseat a Trump-backing science denier in a district that is ground zero in the fight against climate change.” -- Derrick Crowe, Candidate for Congress (TX-21)

Derrick Crowe is a self-professed “science nerd” with extensive professional experience on Capitol Hill who is committed to taking on the fringe right and start delivering for all the people of Texas’ 21st Congressional District.  In Congress, Crowe will be a fearless champion for ending the rigged economy, fighting climate change, passing Medicare for All, and confronting structural racism.

Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $40 million and made more than 11.1 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 915 progressive candidates nationwide.

DFA backs James Thompson in bid for Kansas’ 4th Congressional District

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced that it had re-upped its support for civil rights attorney James Thompson in his race for Congress in Kansas’ 4th Congressional District.

This is DFA’s second time supporting Thompson for this congressional seat.  The group proudly supported him during his exceedingly strong performance in the April 2017 special election in Kansas’ 4th Congressional District.

DFA has 12,755 members in Kansas and one million members nationwide.

DFA Chair Jim Dean on the organization’s endorsement of Thompson:

“In April, James Thompson showed that, even with very little help from Democrats in Washington DC, a civil rights attorney and military veteran who is committed to run core populist progressive principles can do what many insiders might think is impossible.

“We’re proud to support James Thompson for Congress because we know his smart, people-powered campaign can not only can win in Kansas’ 4th District, but show leaders in the rest of the country how to beat back  Donald Trump’s agenda of bigotry, hate, and division by standing up for bold, progressive ideas and refusing to cave on core values of racial, gender, and economic justice.  -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

Thompson on receiving DFA’s endorsement:

"This endorsement from Democracy for America is an important milestone for my 2018 campaign. My special election campaign could not have gotten as close to victory as we did without the help of groups like DFA. Since the national Democratic Party had written off our special election, we had to rely on outside groups like DFA to accomplish what we did in April—and we got results. We did better than any Democrat has done here in the past 20 years and moved the needle more to the left than any of the special elections campaigns for Congress in 2017.

With this endorsement, we are once again working together to promote the progressive values we know people in Kansas, and the nation, hold dear. We believe in things like preserving the Affordable Care Act, protecting our DREAMERs, promoting education, and empowering women. With his very first vote in Congress, my opponent, Ron Estes, voted in favor of the House GOP’s healthcare bill. He voted with a smile on his face for a bill which would have decimated Kansas and its rural communities and kicked more than 23 million Americans off of healthcare. I knew then that I had to continue the fight for my fellow Kansans and working Americans everywhere; because a government of the people, should also be a government for the people." -- James Thompson

A proud U.S. army veteran who went on to fight for civil rights after earning college and law degree with the help of the G.I. Bill, Thompson is a passionate progressive who understands America thrives when everyone succeeds.  Thompson’s strong performance in April’s special election with little help from the national party showed that a progressive with his focus on jobs, education, and veterans can put this deep red district in play and show Democrats across the country how to win.

Democracy for America is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC with more than one million members nationwide committed to taking on income inequality, money in politics, and structural racism.

Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $40 million and made more than 11.1 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 915 progressive candidates nationwide.

DFA resolute in fight to protect Obamcare, pass “Medicare for All” after Graham-Cassidy failure

Earlier today, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced that the Senate did not have enough votes to pass the Graham-Cassidy healthcare legislation, effectively ending Republicans most recent attempt to dismantle Obamacare.

Democracy for America's Executive Director Charles Chamberlain responded to Senate Republicans' decision to give up on passing Trumpcare 3.0 saying:

"While Democracy for America members celebrate Senate Republicans failing once again in their most recent attempt to gut Obamacare and replace it with a fake health care plan that would strip millions of their insurance and result in the deaths of thousands of Americans, we know the fight isn’t over and likely won’t be over for years to come.

"Healthcare is a human right, period. DFA members are committed to beating back every effort to dismantle the progress and successes of Obamacare while continuing to fight for the truly universal coverage guaranteed by Medicare For All.

"Today's news is an important step in a larger battle to ensuring healthcare access to every single American, but we still have a long way to go."  -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America.

Democracy for America backs Veronica Escobar in U.S. House race in TX-16

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Veronica Escobar in her race for U.S, Congress in Texas 16th congressional district.

Democracy for America has 79,226 members in Texas and more than one million members nationwide.

Chair Jim Dean on DFA’s endorsement of Veronica Escobar for Congress:

“As a former County Commissioner and El Paso County Judge, Veronica Escobar understands the dangers El Paso’s border community face with Donald Trump and his bigoted allies at the helm in Washington and she’s shown throughout her career to the progressive values needed to fearlessly beat back injustice.

“Democracy for America members are excited to support Veronica Escobar for Congress because we know the experience she has standing up for racial, gender, and economic justice and we’re certain she’ll be a critical ally in the fights for the populist progressive reforms we need to confront Donald Trump’s hate-fueled agenda.” -- Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America

Quote from Veronica Escobar on receiving DFA’s endorsement:

"I am honored and humbled by this endorsement and ready to work with the members of Democracy for America, for the people of El Paso and Americans across the country. As County Judge in El Paso, I worked hard to expand access to affordable healthcare for our community.  But even with Obamacare and efforts at the local level like ours, too many Americans still lack access to quality healthcare because they lack insurance or because the costs of care are too high. The result is devastating to families. I'm ready to work together to create a system of healthcare that provides affordable, quality care for all.” -- Veronica Escobar, Candidate for Congress (TX-16)

A third generation El Pasoan, Veronica Escobar has established herself as an educator, judge, and community activists ready to fight for the border community she loves.  As an El Paso County Judge, Escobar has fought corruption in local government and took bold stances in defense of the rights of women, working families, and immigrants.  In Congress, Escobar is committed to standing up to Donald Trump and his allies bigoted and hate-fueled agenda and doing what it takes to grow jobs and expand access to healthcare, transportation, and quality of life in El Paso.

Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $40 million and made more than 11.1 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 915 progressive candidates nationwide.

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) endorsed Joe Neguse in his race for U.S. Congress in Colorado’s 2nd congressional districts.

Democracy for America has more than 61,550 members in Colorado and more than one million members nationwide.

Democracy for America Chair Jim Dean on the organization’s endorsement of Joe Neguse for Congress:

“The Colorado’s second congressional district is a critical power base for progressives in the Mile High State and our country, which is why it’s so important that it gets a Representative in Congress like Joe Neguse who will champion bold ideas like Medicare for All in Washington.

“From his experience on Colorado University’s Board of Regents to his battles for citizens at the State’s consumer protection agency, Joe Neguse has built a career dedicated to standing up for progressive values.  Democracy for America members are  thrilled to support Joe Neguse for Congress because he’s already done great things for Colorado and our country needs the next generation of progressive leaders like him on the national stage.” -- Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America

Quote from Joe Neguse on receiving DFA’s endorsement:

"I am humbled and honored to have the support of DFA. People-driven campaigns are how we can fight back against what's been happening in Washington D.C. With your support, we can truly change the face of Congress and fight for real progressive change, like a Medicare-for-all system, a $15/hour minimum wage, and overturning Citizens United." -- Joe Neguse, Candidate for Congress (CO-2)

The son of hardworking immigrants from Eritrea, Joe Neguse is the co-founder of New Era Colorado, the state’s largest youth voter registration and mobilization nonprofit in Colorado.  In 2008, Neguse was elected by 2nd district voters to serve on the Colorado University’s Board of Regents, becoming the second African-American to be elected Regent in Colorado history.  Following his service as Regent, Neguse was appointed to lead the state’s consumer protection agency where he achieved a number of key victories for Colorado consumers and was awarded the 2017 “Consumer Protection Award” by the international Council on Licensure, Enforcement, and Regulation. In Congress, Neguse is focused on expanding opportunities for all Coloradans and delivering on big, bold populist progressive reforms like Medicare for All.

Democracy for America celebrates Vi Lyles outright victory in Charlotte mayoral primary

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) celebrated the stunning upset victory endorsed candidate Vi Lyles achieved  in Charlotte's Democratic mayoral primary.

In the multi-candidate primary matchup, Lyles beat the incumbent mayor by 10 points and  earned over 46% of the primary vote, allowing her to claim the Democratic nomination outright and proceed directly to the Fall general mayoral election against Republican Kenny Smith.  If elected, Lyles will be the first Black woman to ever serve as Charlotte’s Mayor.

Democracy for America was among the first national progressive organizations to endorse Lyles in April 2017, raised more than $10,000 via 1,567 individual contributions, co-sponsored events, and worked directly with the campaign to set up its DFA Dialer calling tool to reach out to voters.

With Yvette Simpson's surprise victory in Cincinnati, Lyles’ primary victory marks second time this cycle that a DFA-endorsed progressive Black woman with a powerful track record of unapologetic progressive leadership has defied conventional wisdom and won a race against an incumbent mayor in a major city.

Democracy for America Chair Jim Dean on Vi Lyles outright victory in the Charlotte mayoral primary:

“Vi Lyles won an outright victory in Charlotte’s Democratic mayoral primary, not by spending hundreds of thousands of dollars airing TV ads, but by spelling out her convictions and talking one-on-one with voters about her bold vision for a more equitable, just, and fair Charlotte. Her victory may be a surprise to the pundits but not to the voters.

“Voters sent a powerful message by unseating an incumbent and putting Vi Lyles in the position to make history in November as the first Black woman to be ever elected Charlotte’s Mayor.

“City governments can no longer be a playground for Wall Street developers, violent and unaccountable police departments, or Democratic incumbents good old boy’s networks. In 2017, voters stand ready to make cities everywhere into bastions of resistance to the Trump regime, by electing bold progressive leaders, like Vi Lyles, who run on and are committed to fighting for racial and economic justice.” -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

DFA has over 46,930 members in the state of North Carolina.

DFA’s support for Lyles is part of a 2017-18 organizational initiative to invest $500,000 in municipal races across the country that the Associated Press recently described as an attempt “turn the Trump resistance movement into tangible victories.”

Prior to her election to an at-large position on the City Council in 2013, Lyles had spent nearly thirty years in Charlotte’s city government, including more than a decade as the assistant city manager. She was instrumental in guiding Charlotte’s affordable housing plan and in the development of Mecklenburg County’s Minority and Women’s Business Enterprise Program -- both of which had a dramatic impact on improving the lives of forgotten Charlotte residents.

Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $40 million and made more than 11.1 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 915 progressive candidates nationwide.

DFA on growing momentum behind Sanders’ “Medicare for All” bill

Over the last 24 hours, multiple members of the U.S. Senate have announced their decision to support Senator Bernie Sanders' "Medicare for All" bill which is set to be unveiled tomorrow (Wednesday).

Democracy for America is a strong supporter of Senator Sanders' bill and will be working with our members across the country to build on the rapidly growing support for Medicare for All.

Quick comment from DFA Executive Director Charles Chamberlain on the growing support for Medicare for All:

"In the last few days, we've seen the number of U.S. Senators backing Senator Sanders' Medicare for All legislation rapidly increasing and we wouldn't be surprised if this week ends with more than 20% of the Senate Democratic Caucus supporting the bill.

"The growing momentum for Medicare for All is a remarkable turnaround for an idea that was deemed too radical to even debate eight years ago. However, it's really a testament to the political clarity of the policy and the steadfast work Senator Sanders has put into organizing support for it inside and outside the halls of power.

"Medicare for All legislation isn't going to be passed by this Republican Congress or signed by this President, but the momentum growing behind it right now has already ensured that it'll be a crystal clear goal of any progressive's agenda for years to come." -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America

Democracy for America endorses Cary Moon for Seattle Mayor

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Cary Moon in the hotly contested race for Mayor of Seattle, WA.

DFA’s support for Moon is part of a 2017-18 organizational initiative to invest $500,000 in municipal races across the country that the Associated Press recently described as an attempt “turn the Trump resistance movement into tangible victories.”

In the past, DFA has helped elect progressive leaders to municipal leadership across the country, including Mayor Michael Tubbs of Stockton (CA), Vice Mayor Regina Romero of Tucson, Illinois’ Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx, and City Councillor Helen Gym of Philadelphia. In 2015, DFA endorsed Lisa Herbold, Mike O’Brien, Kshama Sawant, and Lorena Gonzalez in their successful campaigns for the Seattle City Council.

Democracy for America Chair Jim Dean on the endorsement of Cary Moon for Seattle Mayor:

“Democracy for America is excited to support Cary Moon for Mayor because she has the vision and experience needed to address Seattle’s urgent needs.  She understands how city government works better than almost anyone else in town, and has a detailed vision for how to work with everyone in Seattle to take on white supremacy, economic inequality, and corporate power.

“Over the last decade, Seattle has become a national leader in the fight for progressive policies and priorities. Electing Cary Moon mayor gives Seattle an opportunity to make it clear that it’s doubling down on that populist progressive leadership -- something that could not be more important in the wake of Donald Trump’s election.” -- Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America

DFA has over 75,600 members in the state of Washington.

Moon is a community activist, engineer, and urban planner, who built her reputation as a community fighter by successfully battling to reclaim land and build civic space on Seattle’s waterfront.  As mayor, she’s looking use her experience bringing people together to get big things done to tackle chronic challenges facing Seattle like housing affordability, transit, and racial inequity.

Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $40 million and made more than 11.1 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 915 progressive candidates nationwide.

DFA RESPONSE: With DACA recision, Trump “is governing like a white supremacist”

Donald Trump's administration just launched its plans to rescind Deferred Action for Child Arrival (DACA) protections for over 800,000 hardworking young people who came to the United States as children.

Here's Democracy for America's response to Trump's disgusting decision to repeal DACA:

"Donald Trump may think he can hide behind legalistic moralizing and briefly kicking the fate of DACA to Congress, but he can't conceal his pursuit of an amoral, bigoted agenda, no matter how cowardly he does it.

"Two weeks ago, we saw Donald Trump side with Nazis after the horrors of Charlottesville and pardon a former Arizona sheriff who ran a self-described segregated “concentration camp” for undocumented immigrants. Today, the Trump administration begins its efforts to end DACA and destroy the lives of 800,000 hardworking young people who were brought to this country as children.  Simply put, Donald Trump is governing like a white supremacist.

"To those who spent the last week publicly wringing their hands about the President's impending destruction of DACA, especially those in Congress, it's time to put up or shut up.  Are you going to stand with the white supremacist in the White House who attacks young, primarily black and brown people who've done nothing wrong?  Or are you going to stand with the overwhelming majority of Americans who support the DACA program and take action to defend it?

"DFA stands in solidarity with the Dreamers and all immigrants and refugees, all loved and valued parts of our community, targeted by the Trump administration. We will not stand by quietly while the President and his party tear apart our families, target our friends, and destroy our communities.  We expect our elected leaders to join us in fighting back against this attack on DACA and clearly respond with action to the white supremacist governance streaming out of the White House.  With the lives of hundreds of thousands on the line, pointed tweets and artful press statements with empty platitudes and words of concern aren’t enough.  -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

DFA on “cowardly bigot” Trump’s failure to call out white supremacist terrorism in Charlottesville

Following Donald Trump's absurdly disturbing press conference glossing over the white supremacist terrorist attack during today's racist rallies in Charlottesville, VA, Democracy for America released the following statement.

"We don't need to 'study' the storm of bigotry and hate that Donald Trump helped unleashed in this country and, today, killed a peaceful protestor in the streets of Charlottesville.

"It should be shocking that the President of the United States has refused to call the white supremacist terrorism that occurred today what it is, but it isn't. Donald Trump is a cowardly bigot who openly sought the support of the people carrying torches, running over individuals, and screaming Nazi slogans.

"The brave souls who put their bodies on the line to stand up to bigotry, hate, and white supremacy in Charlottesville represent the very best of our country's values and serve as a model of resistance that we all must work to emulate." -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America

DFA & Leading Progressive Groups: Democratic Party must stand up, proudly support abortion rights

Leading progressive groups, led by Democracy for America (DFA) and NARAL Pro-Choice America, today released a Statement of Principles when it comes to the Democratic Party and abortion.

Joining DFA and NARAL on the Statement of Principles are MoveOn Political Action, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, EMILY’s List, Working Families Party, Ultraviolet, Daily Kos, Demos, Progressive Change Campaign Committee, Indivisible Project, American Federation of Teachers, and Social Security Works.

The Statement of Principles brings together groups that supported Secretary Hillary Clinton and Senator Bernie Sanders in last year’s primary.

"Democrats will fail to retake power in 2018 if we allow ourselves to be forced into a false choice between a populist progressive agenda and reproductive justice,"  said Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director of Democracy for America.  "Abortion rights are inextricably tied to the fight against economic and racial inequity, full stop, and until all leaders of our party fully understand that we're going to keep losing."

“Our basic rights and freedoms are under assault daily from the Trump Administration,” said Ilyse Hogue, President of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “The Democratic Party cannot give an inch in their opposition to this Administration. That is true across the board and especially true when it comes to abortion rights. The Democratic Party cannot and will not win if it turns it’s back on women and our fundamental rights.”

The Statement of Principles are online here and copied below:

As progressives, we know we cannot have a real conversation about economic security that does not include the ability to decide if, when, and how to raise a family; that being able to plan a pregnancy has a powerful effect on educational attainment, career trajectory, and chance to define our own destinies.

As progressives, we stand united in understanding that policies that limit access to abortion and force medically unnecessary procedures are oppressive to women, especially low-income women and women of color.

As progressives, we stand united in the belief that a woman’s autonomy over her own body is not a secondary issue or a “social issue,” but rather a human right and a necessity in order to attain and preserve  economic security in her life.

As progressives, we acknowledge that the current economic system is exceptionally punishing of mothers, single mothers, and mothers of color whose wages, job opportunities, and economic advancement suffer due to the “motherhood penalty.”

As progressives, we stand united in our belief that 21st century economic populism must include an understanding of how race and gender affect our economic reality and our economic opportunity.

As a progressive movement, we recognize that over the last decade there has been a massive erosion of access to abortion and attacks on contraception and we cannot back away from this fight without abandoning people and undercutting core constituencies in our base.

As we always have, progressives share our party with people who personally don’t believe that abortion is an option for them. This includes self-identified “pro-life” legislators up until the moment they seek to impose those personal views on their constituents and the country. If they vote to restrict abortion access or contraception access, they then undercut the party platform and they undercut the welfare of women. We strive for and believe in personal evolution and growth so, if they have voted to do so in the past, the burden of proof is upon them through subsequent votes and/or public statements -- not in the heat of a campaign -- but prior to running for office or re-election.

Thus, as progressives, we know to organize, mobilize, and win elections we must field candidates who understand the integral nature of these core values and bring the full power of our collective base to win.

DFA says DCCC’s “profoundly disturbing” comments against abortion rights will hurt Democrats

Yesterday, in an interview with THE HILLDCCC Chair Rep. Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) said that House Democrats would not withhold funds from candidates who oppose abortion rights.

Democracy for America has long held that abortion rights are a core component of any populist progressive political agenda and a requirement in any comprehensive fight against economic and racial inequity.

Today, DFA's Executive Director, Charles Chamberlain, responded to Luján's disturbing comments regarding the DCCC's support for abortion rights:

"It is profoundly disturbing to hear the person tasked with helping Democrats take back the House suggest that our party can credibly talk about confronting economic inequity while turning a blind eye to candidates who want to limit women's right to control their own bodies. Abortion rights are inextricably tied to the fight against economic and racial inequity, full stop, and until all leaders of our party fully understand that we're going to keep losing.

"Democrats retook Congress in 2006 because Gov. Howard Dean's 50-State Strategy ensured that the party was equipped to compete across the country and strong opposition to the Iraq war mobilized millions to send Republicans packing. We won in spite of the handful of anti-choice corporatists who ran as Democrats, not because of them. And, years later, it was many of those same corporate and anti-choice Democrats who worked to limit health care reform and water down efforts to restrain Wall Street greed.

"If the DCCC is willing to throw choice out for the sake of political expediency, what other core Democratic values are next? Democrats can and should work to find and support candidates who reflect their districts, but trying to build a congressional majority by selectively ignoring key components in the fight against economic and racial inequity, like abortion rights, is morally incoherent and politically stupid.” -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America

Following stunning healthcare vote, DFA backs Sen. Mazie Hirono for reelection in Hawaii

The day after her heartfelt speech helped derail the seven-year campaign by Senate Republicans to repeal Obamacare, Democracy for America (DFA) endorsed Senator Mazie Hirono in her bid to continue representing Hawaii in the U.S. Senate.

DFA has 8,197 members in Hawaii and more than one million members nationwide.

DFA Chair Jim Dean on the grassroots progressive organization’s decision to support Sen. Hirono’s reelection effort:

“Democracy for America members can't wait any longer to demonstrate our support for Senator Mazie Hirono's re-election after her impassioned speech last night in defense of Obamacare.

“Throughout the fight to protect the Affordable Care Act, Senator Mazie Hirono has stood out as a consistent voice for the voiceless and a steadfast advocate for Medicare for All, the fundamental transformation to healthcare our country needs now more than ever. Even more amazingly, Senator Hirono has waged these fights and spoken out in support of a bold policy agenda, all while fearlessly waging a battle with cancer.

“Put simply: Over the last few months, Senator Mazie Hirono has fought for the lives of millions of Americans at the same time she’s been fighting for her own. That kind of selfless devotion to resistance and persistence doesn’t just make Senator Hirono someone we want in our corner, it makes her someone who should be an inspiration to all those who care about progressive change.

“DFA and its million members are honored to stand with Senator Hirono in her unwavering fight for the people of Hawaii and the big, bold populist progressive ideas that will make our country a more just, equal, and better place for all Americans.” -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

Sen. Mazie Hirono on DFA’s endorsement:

“Democracy for America and its members are on the front lines of the most important progressive fights in our country. I am honored to receive their endorsement and to fight at their side in the battles to come.” -- Senator Mazie Hirono (HI)

Hirono is the fifth Senate incumbent DFA has backed in the 2018 cycle.  Earlier this year, Democracy for America endorsed Senators Elizabeth Warren (MA), Sherrod Brown (OH), Bernie Sanders (VT), and Tammy Baldwin (WI) in their races for reelection. In 2012, DFA supported Hirono in her first race for the U.S. Senate and, in 2014, the grassroots group backed Sen. Brian Schatz in his contested race for the Aloha State’s other Senate seat.

Democracy for America is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC with more than one million members nationwide committed to taking on income inequality, money in politics, and structural racism. Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $40 million and made more than 11.1 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 917 progressive candidates nationwide.

DFA endorses Rep. Pramila Jayapal for reelection

Democracy for America (DFA) today endorsed Rep. Pramila Jayapal in her reelection bid in Washington’s 7th congressional district.

DFA has 74,922 members in the state of Washington and more than one million members nationwide.

During her 2016 race, DFA began supporting Jayapal in the primary and raised and contributed more than $66,747 to her election.  The average contribution from DFA members was $6.09.

Jayapal is just the second house incumbent DFA has backed in the 2018 cycle and joins  The one million-member progressive organization endorsed Rep. Ruben Gallego (AZ-7) late last month.

DFA Chair Jim Dean on the grassroots organization’s strong support for Jayapal’s reelection:

“In her first six months, Rep. Pramila Jayapal has not only fought for progressive values in DC, she’s worked with her new colleagues and showed them how to fight.

“Rep. Pramila Jayapal, the agenda she fights for, and the steadfast commitment she’s demonstrated to that fight are the future of the Democratic Party and its candidates. To say our country needs bold, populist progressive leaders like Pramila Jayapal in Congress is a tremendous understatement and it’s why we’re so excited to get behind her reelection efforts so early this cycle.

“Democracy for America members were proud to support Pramila in her first race for Congress, but we’re even more excited to reelect her because she’s already proven to be a vital movement ally in the fight to build a Democratic Party and a Congress that’s committed to delivering healthcare, a liveable wage, college, and environmental justice for all Americans.  -- Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America

Rep. Pramila Jayapal on DFA’s endorsement:

"I am honored to have the support of Democracy for America and its members nationwide. In times like these, we can't just be an opposition party, we must also be a proposition party. That means not only resisting Donald Trump, but also harnessing our power to organize and leverage the grassroots at key moments to fight for healthcare for all, a livable wage, college for all and environmental justice.  DFA continues to be a leader on these issues  and I looked forward to building our movement together." -- Rep. Pramila Jayapal

DFA has also endorsed Manka Dhingra, a candidate Jayapal has also backed, in her campaign for a hotly contested State Senate seat in Washington’s 45th District.

DFA urges Senate Democrats to vote NO on Christopher Wray FBI confirmation

After yesterday’s disappointingly unanimous vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee, Democracy for America is urging all Senate Democrats to vote NO on Christopher Wray’s final confirmation for FBI Director.

Statement from Democracy for America Chair, Jim Dean, against Wray’s confirmation:

“Democrats can’t claim to be the party of the resistance movement if our own U.S. Senators simply go along and nod through Donald Trump’s hand-picked FBI Director after he fired the last one in a blatant and publicly acknowledged attempt to obstruct justice.

“Voting to confirm Christopher Wray to head the FBI is essentially telling Donald Trump that Democrats are just fine with him hiring and firing whoever he wants, whenever he wants, for whatever reason he wants -- up to and including taking illegal action to insulate himself from the law.

“Resistance isn’t just a noun, it’s a verb.  Resistance requires action from everyone who claims to belong to it, from those marching in the streets to those trying to fight back in the corridors of power.

“The grassroots is doing its part by standing up and relentlessly organizing to hold Donald Trump’s administration accountable for its actions.

“We urge Senate Democrats to do their part and actively resist Donald Trump’s lawlessness by voting vote NO on Christopher Wray’s confirmation for FBI Director.” -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

Stop Betsy DeVos and her attacks on civil rights

Take Action!

Betsy DeVos is working hard to destroy our public schools -- and now we need to stop DeVos and her aides from destroying key civil rights protections students need.

DeVos is taking aim at the Department of Education's vital Office of Civil Rights, which enforces numerous protections against discrimination in schools. They've even suggested gutting enforcement of Title IX, a critical protection of women's rights in college.

That's the background to the horrific comment made by Candice Jackson, who DeVos put in charge of the Office of Civil Rights. Jackson mocked victims of sexual assault on campus, claiming that "90 percent" of such claims "fall into the category of 'we were both drunk,' 'we broke up, and six months later I found myself under a Title IX investigation because she just decided that our last sleeping together was not quite right.'"

DeVos herself agrees. After meeting with groups of men who have been working to roll back federal investigations of sexual assault, DeVos actually took the side of men accused of these crimes and said their stories needed to be told too.

These are extremely offensive comments coming from anybody. But Jackson is also in charge of federal Title IX investigations of sexual assault on campus. Even though Jackson apologized under pressure, these comments make it clear she's unfit to continue in her job.

Democratic Senator Patty Murray agrees. She's calling on Jackson to resign, saying that these comments "should disqualify her from service in the position of top Department of Education protector of students' right to be safe at school."

DFA stands with Sen. Murray. So do our friends at CREDO Action. Will you help? Sign the petition: Tell Betsy DeVos that Candice Jackson must go -- and the Department of Education must commit to continuing and expanding existing civil rights protections.

DFA: “Tonight, Trumpcare hit a brick wall of people-power” after losing two more GOP Senate votes

A statement from Democracy for America regarding tonight's news that Senate Republicans' most recent iteration of Trumpcare has now lost more than twice the number of Republican votes needed to pass.

“Tonight, Trumpcare hit a brick wall of people-power when it lost two more right-wing Senators for completely different reasons.

“While Mitch McConnell will certainly try to reassemble the flaming wreckage that is Trumpcare’s hodge-podge of death sentences and billionaire giveaways, tonight is a tremendous victory for millions of grassroots activists who have filled town halls, melted phone lines, and risked arrest at congressional offices to defeat Trumpcare and any effort to dismantle the modest health care reforms delivered by the Affordable Care Act.

“Whether this is the beginning of the end or the end of the beginning of this battle, we intend to keep up the fight until Trumpcare is dead, buried, and Congress is focused on enacting Medicare for All, the only truly comprehensive reform that can fix what’s ailing our health care system.” -- Neil Sroka, Communications Director, Democracy for America

DFA backs Mary Matiella in Arizona’s 2nd Congressional District

Chair Jim Dean says Matiella is “the progressive choice” in one of Democrats’ top 2018 targets

Democracy for America (DFA) today endorsed former Assistant Secretary for the Army Mary Matiella in her campaign against Martha McSally in Arizona’s 2nd Congressional District, one of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s top 2018 targets.

DFA has 37,728 members in Arizona and more than one million members nationwide.  In late June, DFA endorsed Rep. Ruben Gallago in his run for reelection in Arizona’s 7th Congressional district, David Garcia in his race for Governor, and January Contreras in her for Attorney General in the Grand Canyon State.

DFA Chair Jim Dean on the grassroots progressive organization’s endorsement of Matiella:

“Throughout her life, Mary Matiella has served the American people and, in Congress, she’ll serve the people of Southern Arizona by fighting for a bold, populist progressive vision for the country that tackles income and equity inequality.

“Not only will Mary Matiella be the first Latina to represent Arizona’s second district, she’s ready to fight to expand Social Security, push for Medicare for All, stop the attacks on immigrants and refugees, and build an economy that works for everyone and not just the elite few.

“Mary Matiella is the progressive choice in Arizona’s 2nd Congressional District race.  We can’t wait to help Democracy for America members in Arizona and across the country help Mary build the smart, people-powered, issues-based grassroots campaign we need to defeat Martha McSally.” -- Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America

Mary Matiella on the endorsement:

"We're building a campaign from the bottom up, and I'm thrilled to have the support of Democracy for America, one of our nation's leading grassroots, progressive advocacy organizations. I look forward to working together to improve the lives and increase opportunities for southern Arizonans." -- Mary Matiella

Mary Matiella is a former Assistant Secretary of the Army, a native Tucsonan, and the child of migrant farm workers.  Taught the the importance of hard work and a good education by her parents early on, Matiella graduated from Tucson’s Pueblo High School and graduated from the University of Arizona’s College of Education with the help of a Regent’s Scholarship before going on to earn a Master’s Degree from the University’s Eller College of Management and a Doctorate in Washington, DC.  Matiella’s career in public service took her from top financial positions at the U.S. Forest Service and the Department of Housing and Urban Develop to a civilian Army position focused on financial management that the Department of Defense ranks as equivalent to a four-star general.

Democracy for America Endorses Challengers Emilio Huerta and Laura Moser for Congress

Democracy for America today endorsed two progressives running for the House of Representatives against Republicans in 2018. Emilio Huerta is running in California’s 21st District against David Valadao and Laura Moser is running in Texas’ 7th District against John Culberson. The news follows the national progressive organization’s first 2018 challenger endorsement yesterday, of Randy Bryce in his campaign against Paul Ryan in Wisconsin’s 1st District. Democracy for America has raised $1.8 million from its members for Bernie Sanders’ campaign last year, and over $60,000 in just a few months for John Ossoff’s special election earlier this year.

Democracy for America Chair Jim Dean on the endorsements:

“This is how we will kick the Republicans out of power in Congress: with candidates like Laura, Emilio, and Randy who are running on their progressive values and using their campaigns to expand the electorate in their districts.”

“Laura Moser didn’t wait until Trump was elected to start mobilizing hundreds of thousands of people across the country to get involved in the resistance. We desperately need more leaders like Laura who have the ingenuity and persistence to go beyond the way things have always been done. Our members are excited to help get her much-needed voice to Congress.”

“Emilio Huerta has been steeped in organizing his whole life, including decades spent empowering communities in the San Joaquin Valley to fight for fair treatment. That experience will be key to turning out people who have traditionally not voted. Flipping this district from Republican control doesn’t happen overnight, which is why we’re glad to stand with Emilio again as he continues the work he began last cycle.” - Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America

Laura Moser on the endorsement:

“I am absolutely thrilled to have DFA's endorsement -- the grassroots, people-powered know-how from a group like DFA will help ensure that our campaign is an indispensable organizing force in the Texas 7th, with impact in not just Houston but all of Texas for decades to come.”

Emilio Huerta on the endorsement:

"The battle for California’s 21st Congressional District will be one of the most important congressional races in 2018. As a life-long resident of California’s San Joaquin Valley, I am concerned that Washington will further erode economic opportunities and environmental safeguards for Valley residents. Congressman David Valadao (R) recently disregarded the interest of working families and voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act. As a result, more than 120,000 residents in the 21st will be without health coverage. Enough! I will fight for expansion of health insurance coverage for all Americans, income equality, better paying jobs, comprehensive immigration reform, elimination of student loan debt, and safeguards for workers and the environment.  I need your help to stop the reckless and catastrophic policies of Donald Trump and the Republican-dominated Congress."

Laura Moser is a long-time writer and journalist who turned to resistance activism following Donald Trump’s election. She began the activist organization Daily Action in response to the corruption and bigotry she saw coming from Capitol Hill. The organization, dedicated to giving people daily actions to resist the Trump administration, currently has around 300,000 members.

Emilio Huerta is the son of civil rights activist Dolores Huerta. His 20+ year career has been spent as a civil rights lawyer as well as a Court Appointed Child Advocate (CASA), general counsel of the Cesar Chavez Foundation, and a national representative for the United Farm Workers union. During his career he has established primary health care clinics in low-income areas in California and has developed more than $400 million in affordable housing across the United States.

Democracy for America Endorses Randy Bryce to Replace Paul Ryan

DFA is First National Multi-Issue Progressive Group to Back the Iron Worker’s Campaign

Democracy for America (DFA) today endorsed ironworker Randy Bryce in his campaign against House Speaker Paul Ryan in Wisconsin’s 1st Congressional District. It is the organization’s first federal challenger endorsement for the 2018 general election. DFA has 41,971 members in Wisconsin and more than one million members nationwide.

DFA Chair Jim Dean on the grassroots progressive organization’s endorsement of Bryce:

“Randy Bryce’s down-to-earth, people-oriented progressivism is a breath of fresh air. While Paul Ryan’s agenda is driven by the lobbyists who can afford to buy his time, Randy’s views on the issues are forged by his time working the iron. He support for single payer health care is informed by his concern for keeping his family covered. His commitment to racial and economic justice is drawn from firsthand knowledge of how they affect his neighbors and co-workers.”

“We need more people like Randy, who reflect and understand their communities, to step forward and run for office across the country. Against the right person running a progressive, issue-based grassroots campaign, no amount of lobbyist and corporate backing can save Republicans in the House from losing their jobs. Our members are excited to prove that by pouring their energy into Randy Bryce’s campaign to replace Paul Ryan.” -- Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America

Randy Bryce on the endorsement:

"Proud to have DFA's endorsement. The backing of an organization that
stands for the progressive values important to so many working people
across our country will help us beat Paul Ryan and carry Wisconsin forward
into 2018." -- Randy Bryce

Randy Bryce is a U.S. Army veteran, cancer survivor, single father, and union ironworker. He was raised in southeastern Wisconsin, and went to public schools. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, and was posted to Honduras, where he earned the Army Achievement Medal. Randy’s father was a police officer, and his mother worked in a doctor’s office. His brother is also a police officer, and his sister is a public school teacher. Randy currently serves as President of the Wisconsin Veterans Chamber of Commerce board of directors, and as Chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin Veterans Caucus.

Democracy for America Endorses David Garcia for Governor and January Contreras for Attorney General

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) endorsed David Garcia and January Contreras in their respective bids for Governor and Attorney General of Arizona. Democracy for America is a million-member national progressive organization whose members contributed more than $1.8 million to Bernie Sanders 2016 presidential campaign. The organization has 37,728 members in Arizona. Yesterday, DFA backed Congressman Ruben Gallego (AZ-07), the organization’s first incumbent House endorsement of the cycle.

Democracy for America Chair Jim Dean on the endorsements:

“With Arizona acting as “ground zero” in the battle against Donald Trump’s hateful agenda, it is more important than ever before that the state has strong progressive leaders who will protect all of Arizona’s residents. Instead, Arizona currently has a Governor and Attorney General who have embraced Trump’s destructive policies, from dismantling public education to backing the Muslim ban.”

“Arizonans deserve a Governor who cares about creating a better future for all of them, not one who is set on selling the state out to the Koch brothers. David Garcia has spent his life dedicated to public education, and his bold vision for tuition-free public college will improve opportunities for generations of Arizonans. That is the kind of progressive change our members are excited to work for, and Garcia will have our full support in his campaign.”

January Contreras has a track record of fighting for the Arizonans who need it most, making her the perfect champion to stand up to the legal nightmare that is Trump’s Justice Department under Jeff Sessions. Our members will have her back in this campaign, so she can protect the residents of Arizona who most need protection from the Trump administration’s bullying tactics.” -- Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America.

David Garcia was born in Arizona and educated entirely in its public schools. After serving in the U.S. Army infantry, he went on to have a high-profile career as an advocate for public education, holding positions such as Associate Superintendent of Public Instruction for Standards and Accountability, and Director of Research and Policy for the Arizona Department of Education. He is currently a professor at ASU.

January Contreras founded the non-profit legal center Arizona Legal Women and Youth Services (ALWAYS) in 2013 to help survivors of sex and labor trafficking, vulnerable children and people in abusive relationships. Prior to that, she worked as an assistant attorney general and as the assistant director of the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System.

Democracy for America Endorses Rep. Ruben Gallego for Re-Election

Democracy for America today endorsed Rep. Ruben Gallego in his re-election campaign to continue representing Arizona’s 7th Congressional District. Rep. Gallego is the first incumbent house member endorsed by the million member progressive grassroots PAC this election cycle.

Democracy for America Chair Jim Dean on the endorsement:

“In the early days following Donald Trump’s election, a lot of Democrats hemmed and hawed about working with him. Ruben Gallego was not one of those people - he instead spoke with bold clarity from the House floor about the threat Trump poses to our country, and has been leading efforts against his hateful agenda ever since.”

“We need more progressives like Ruben Gallego who are not afraid of taking a stand on their principles, especially when they are doing so alone. Progressives lawmakers have a special responsibility for leadership that sometimes involves dragging their colleagues out of the establishment way of thinking that can envelope them in Washington. Our members nationwide are hungry for leadership like Ruben’s, and we are proud to stand with him.” - Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America

Rep. Gallego on the endorsement:

“DFA is fighting Trump at every turn, and I couldn't be prouder to stand with them. We need bold progressives with the toughness to resist and the leadership to map a new course forward if we're going to take back this country. DFA is fostering that every day and I'll be right there with them for as long as it takes.” - Rep. Ruben Gallego

Rep. Ruben Gallego was elected to Congress in 2014 after he serving in the Arizona House of Representatives and in the U.S. Marine Corps, including a tour of duty in Iraq. He has also led efforts to recall former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who was notorious for his racist policies targeting immigrants.

Democracy for America is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC committed to taking on income inequality, money in politics, and structural racism. Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $40 million and made more than 11.1 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 917 progressive candidates nationwide.

Democracy for America Endorses Wendy Carrillo for California State Assembly

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) endorsed community advocate Wendy Carrillo in the special election for California State Assembly District 51, a seat currently held by Assemblyman Jimmy Gomez, who won election to Congress. DFA is a million-member national progressive organization that raised $1.8 million for Bernie Sanders’ 2016 Presidential Campaign. DFA has 278,352 members in California.

Democracy for America Chair Jim Dean on the endorsement of Carrillo:

“In Wendy Carrillo we have a bold progressive with the skills and experience needed to tackle the issues that touch the lives of people in California most, like environmental justice and ending income inequality.

“Throughout her career as a journalist and advocate, Wendy Carrillo has been on the frontlines of countless reform movements fighting for equality, opportunity, and fairness. She has been relentless in her pursuit of a future where every Californian is treated with fairness and dignity. We need unapologetic progressives like Wendy in every corner of the country, and we are looking forward to lending her our support in this important election.” -- Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America.

Wendy Carrillo made the following statement in response to winning DFA’s support:

“I’m honored to receive the endorsement of DFA in my race to represent the hard working men and women in California’s 51st Assembly District. Our state has shown incredible leadership in defending the rights of workers, immigrants, women’s comprehensive reproductive rights, healthcare and the LGBTQ community, amongst many other issues. I’m eager to continue these efforts and ensure that California leads the way in our progressive values.”

Democracy for America is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC committed to taking on income inequality, money in politics, and structural racism. Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $40 million and made more than 11.1 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 907 progressive candidates nationwide.
