Democracy for America Members Mobilize to Stop Telecom Immunity

Released: Jul 1, 2008 10:52 AM

BURLINGTON, VT – DemocracyForAmerica.com, our nation’s largest progressive political action community, this morning sent a message to its over 725,000 members asking them to take action to stop the reauthorization of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.  DFA members will be visiting their Senators’ district offices to demand that they stop the President’s attempt to grant retroactive immunity to the telecommunications companies that participated in his program of illegal wiretapping.  DFA has been at the lead of efforts to block retroactive immunity.

Retroactive immunity is an assault on the Constitution,” said Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America.  “President Bush and Vice President Cheney cannot be allowed to give their cronies at AT&T and Verizon a get-out-of-jail free card.”

Democracy for America members will be delivering directly to their Senators a strong message of opposition to this boldfaced attempt to cover up the Bush administration’s illegal activities.  DFA members will be carrying a message which demands that senators support a filibuster of the “compromise” FISA legislation. (DFA handout attached to this email)

In November of 2007, Sen. Harry Reid was forced, after his office received thousands of calls from Democracy for America members, to pull a FISA bill that included retroactive immunity from Senate consideration.

In the days before this year’s State of the Union address, Democracy for America members funded a full-page New York Times ad that called on Senators Clinton and Obama to show leadership, return to Washington, and support the filibuster in opposition to this attempt at retroactive immunity.  Again, retroactive immunity was defeated after the Senate failed to garner enough votes to block a filibuster.

And, in March, Democracy for America targeted House Intelligence Committee Chairman Silvestre Reyes.  Rep. Reyes had indicated he was “open” to compromise on retroactive immunity.  After thousands of calls to his offices in El Paso and Washington and a full-page ad in his district’s largest paper, Rep. Reyes thought better of the compromise.  Rep. Reyes stood with Speaker Pelosi and his committee produced a bill that did not contain retroactive immunity.

Over the past two weeks, Democracy for America members made tens of thousands of calls to their senators.  These calls pushed back consideration of the FISA “compromise” till after the July recess.

Democracy for America members have been working to stop retroactive immunity; they have made calls, they have written letters, they have shown the strength of grassroots action,” said Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of Democracy for America.  “Today, they are going to show their senators’ the true face of America.  DFA members will let their senators know the protections guaranteed by the Constitution are not optional.

Chellie Pingree, as a business owner and elected representative, has shown she has what it takes to lead and Democracy for America is proud to endorse her campaign,” said Jim Dean, Chair of DFA.  “Chellie Pingree is a tested leader who has the skills and experience that her constituents deserve.

Chellie has been actively engaged in three decades of work for change.  This has ranged from serving the residents of  North Haven on the school board to leading more than 300,000 members and supporters across the nation as the president and CEO of Common Cause to serving eight years in the Maine State Senate.

In the legislature, Chellie stood firm for social and economic justice, and never backed down from taking on powerful adversaries--most notably the pharmaceutical lobby.  In the Legislature, Chellie took on the pharmaceutical companies to pass a first-in-the-nation program to lower the price of prescription drugs in Maine.  Always mindful of Maine's need for economic development, Chellie was chair of the Economic Growth Council.

Chellie is a small business owner and farmer who understands the economic policies of George Bush, John McCain, and the Republican Party are not in the best interests of Mainers.  She created jobs for community as owner and manager of North Island Yarns and North Island Designs.  Chellie’s current business is Nebo Lodge, an inn and restaurant on North Haven.

"The most important part of my campaign has been one on one interaction with the voters at the grassroots level--which is why I'm thrilled to be endorsed by Democracy for America, an organization committed to grassroots organizing," said Chellie Pingree.

Democracy for America is the key endorsement in this race, bringing donations from progressives and providing volunteers to participate in door-to-door, grassroots outreach.  DFA has helped elect over 550 progressives to office from Governor Deval Patrick in Massachusetts to Rep. Jerry McNerney in California’s 11th Congressional District.

Chellie Pingree knows we have to break our dependence on foreign oil, support development of alternative sources of energy, and fix our broken health care system to guarantee we leave our children and grandchildren a better world,” said Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of Democracy for America.  “Chellie Pingree’s commitment to progressive values shows she is ready to go to Washington and tackle and solve the tough problems.

Democracy for America Endorses Tom Allen for United States Senate

Released: Jul 1, 2008 10:39 AM

BURLINGTON, VT – DemocracyForAmerica.com, our nation’s largest progressive political action community, has endorsed Tom Allen’s campaign to represent Maine in the United States Senate.  Tom has represented Maine’s 1st Congressional District for the past twelve years.  In this campaign, Tom is running against Republican incumbent Susan Collins.  Ms. Collins likes to portray herself as a moderate, but in reality she has been a consistent vote for the failed policies of George Bush, John McCain, and the Republican Party.

Tom Allen has a proven record and the experience Mainers deserve and Democracy for America is proud to endorse his campaign,” said Jim Dean, Chair of DFA.  “Tom Allen is a committed public servant whose vision and foresight are needed in the Senate.

Allen expressed his gratitude for the endorsement.

In a few short years, Democracy for America has greatly strengthened our Party and our nation by empowering voters with effective tools for grassroots engagement and discussion on the issues,” said Tom Allen.  “I appreciate DFA’s confidence in me and am thankful to have them on board in my campaign for change.

Tom Allen knows we have to end the War in Iraq, fix our broken health care system, and implement economic policies that support the middle class and working men and women,” said Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of Democracy for America.  “Tom Allen’s people-powered campaign is a clear sign that he will put his constituents before big money special interests.

Susan Collins likes to talk a big game, but the truth of the matter is she can’t walk the walk and remains in lockstep with the misguided agenda of George Bush, John McCain, and the Republican Party,” said Daniel I. Medress, Communications Director of Democracy for America.  “Tom Allen is a straight-shooter who doesn’t change his tune based on the latest polling.  This is a lesson Susan Collins is incapable of learning.

Tom grew up in Portland and spent summers and weekends on the family farm near North Sebago.  Tom attended Bowdoin College, where he demonstrated his capacity for courage and leadership.  In 1965, he made headlines when he led the Bowdoin chapter of his fraternity out of the national association because it refused to admit African Americans.  Through his academic success and leadership, Tom earned the Rhodes Scholarship.  He attended Harvard Law upon graduation from Oxford.

Tom served on Portland’s City Council in Portland from 1989 to 1995. During his tenure, Portland led the state in nondiscrimination practices by banning bias based on sexual orientation for housing, credit and employment.

In 1996, Tom ran for Congress from Maine’s 1st District, defeating incumbent Republican James Longley, Jr. by 10 percentage points. In Washington, Tom has been a strong and effective leader, pioneering legislation on prescription drug issues, campaign finance reform and the environment. A member of two influential House committees – Energy & Commerce and Budget – he is a strong advocate for health care, small business, energy, fiscal responsibility and economic competitiveness.

BURLINGTON, VT – DemocracyForAmerica.com, our nation’s largest progressive political action community, has endorsed Dan Maffei’s campaign to represent New York’s 25th Congressional District.  Two years ago, Dan came close to defeating incumbent Republican James Walsh.  Rather than face a tough campaign again, Mr. Walsh announced his retirement in January.  Dan’s likely challenger on the Republican ticket will be the lackluster Dale Sweetland.

Dan Maffei has the public and private sector experience that the 25th District needs and Democracy for America is proud to endorse his campaign,” said Jim Dean, Chair of DFA.  “Dan Maffei knows progressive values on issues like jobs and health care will make Upstate New York and the whole country stronger.

Dan Maffei is ready on day one to work for an agenda that brings good paying jobs back to Upstate NewYork, fixes our broken health care system, and ends the disastrous foreign policy of George Bush, John McCain, and the Republican Party,” said Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of Democracy for America.  “While jobs were leaving Upstate New York and health care costs were soaring, James Walsh, Dale Sweetland, and the Republican Party did nothing.  Dan Maffei’s experience, vision, and judgment make him the only choice on Election Day.

Democracy for America Endorses Linda Stender for United States House of Representatives

Released: Jun 27, 2008 10:31 AM

BURLINGTON, VT – DemocracyForAmerica.com, our nation’s largest progressive political action community, has endorsed Linda Stender’s campaign to represent New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District.  Two years ago, Linda came within 1% of defeating incumbent Republican Mike Ferguson.  Rather than face a tough campaign again, Mr. Ferguson dropped out.  Running in his place on the Republican ticket will be Bush lackey Leonard Lance.

Linda Stender has a progressive record of public service that can’t be matched and Democracy for America is proud to endorse her campaign,” said Jim Dean, Chair of DFA.  “Linda Stender has been at the forefront of progressive activism in New Jersey and she is ready to take her experience and judgment to Washington.

Linda Stender and her husband Richard raised their three kids in Fanwood, NJ, a few blocks from where she grew up.  Linda first got involved in public service when the Fanwood Borough Council was putting special interests before the needs of the people.  So, she ran for office herself to reform local government and help her neighbors.  And she won.

After serving on the Borough Council, Linda went on to serve as Mayor of her hometown and Freeholder of her county.  Today, Linda is proudly serving her fourth term in the New Jersey General Assembly representing her neighbors in the 22nd Legislative District.  In the state legislature, Linda spearheaded the effort to combat Global Warming.  Linda Stender is also one of New Jersey’s strongest advocates for making our state a national leader for stem cell research.

I am honored and thrilled to receive the endorsement of Democracy for America, an organization that shares my commitment to working together to take our country back,” said Linda Stender.  “The Bush administration and Republicans in Washington have led our nation in the wrong direction, and I’m running for Congress to get us back on the right track.  I look forward to working with the DFA community over the coming weeks and months to bring the change our families need.

With Linda Stender in Congress we can make much needed progress on issues like revitalizing our economy, ending the War in Iraq, making the United States energy independent, and providing health care to all Americans,” said Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of Democracy for America.  “Everyone deserves to be represented by someone who is responsive to their needs and concerns.  When Linda Stender is elected, the residents of New Jersey’s 7th District will have that.

Democracy for America Endorses Mark Begich for United States Senate

Released: Jun 25, 2008 10:27 AM

BURLINGTON, VT – DemocracyForAmerica.com, our nation’s largest progressive political action community, has endorsed Mark Begich’s campaign for the United States Senate.  Begich is running against disgraced Senator Ted Stevens.  Sen. Stevens is currently the target of several investigations regarding his ties to lobbyists and powerful business interests like the oil services company VECO.

Mark Begich has shown as mayor of Anchorage he has the integrity and judgment to lead and Democracy for America is proud to endorse his campaign,” said Jim Dean, Chair of DFA.  “Mark Begich’s commitment to honesty and transparency and his record of success make him the only choice this November.

Mark Begich, 46, is in his fifth year as mayor of Alaska’s largest city, which under his administration is in its 20th consecutive year of economic growth, has enjoyed a record building boom and is financially sound due to strong fiscal management.  Begich, the city’s first mayor born in Anchorage, is the son of Alaska’s third congressman, Nick Begich, who in 1972, along with House Majority Leader Hale Boggs, disappeared while flying between Anchorage and Juneau.

As mayor, Begich is especially focused on transforming Anchorage into a progressive, international city capitalizing on its Pacific Rim location.  Twice during Begich’s tenure – and for the first time in a generation - voters have passed every proposition on the city ballot, approving enormous investments in public facilities, public safety, parks and recreation and transportation.

Begich will bring his style of being open and accessible with him when he is elected to the U.S. Senate.

I am pleased to receive the endorsement of Democracy for America and recognition of my work standing up for working families, not for special interests,” said Mark Begich. “Together we can bring great change to America and improve the lives of families from Alaska to Maine and everywhere in between.

Democracy for America is a key endorsement in this race, bringing donations from progressives and providing volunteers to participate in door-to-door, grassroots outreach.  DFA has helped elect over 550 progressives to office from Governor Deval Patrick in Massachusetts to Rep. Jerry McNerney in California’s 11th Congressional District.

Mark Begich is ready to reform the corrupted and misguided ethics of the insider Washington culture,” said Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of Democracy for America.  “Mark Begich is ready to do the hard work needed to make the United States energy independent, to make sure our struggling economy gets back on the right track, and to make sure we honor the service of our brave men and women in uniform.

Ted Stevens is part of the tired, old culture of incumbency that puts big money campaign contributors in the driver’s seat instead of the American people,” said Daniel I. Medress, Communications Director of Democracy for America.  “Mark Begich will work for his constituents and be accountable to the high standards Ted Stevens is incapable of living up to.

Democracy for America Says No to FISA “Compromise”

Released: Jun 20, 2008 10:03 AM

Jim Dean: “Will Speaker Pelosi show the leadership to do the right thing?”

BURLINGTON, VT – DemocracyForAmerica.com, our nation’s largest progressive political action community, this morning sent a message to its over 725,000 members asking them to call Speaker Nancy Pelosi to demand that she does not let the so-called FISA “compromise” bill come to a vote.  DFA has been at the lead of efforts to block retroactive immunity for the telecommunications companies that participated in President Bush’s program of illegal wiretapping on Americans.

Listen, this bill is a sham,” said Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America.  “The question is: will Speaker Pelosi show the leadership to do the right thing and stop this bill?”

In November of 2007, Sen. Harry Reid was forced, after his office received thousands of calls from Democracy for America members, to pull a FISA bill that included retroactive immunity from Senate consideration.

In the days before this year’s State of the Union address, DFA members funded a full-page New York Times ad that called on Senators Clinton and Obama to show leadership, return to Washington, and support the filibuster in opposition to this attempt at retroactive immunity.

Reyes though better of compromise.  Rep. Reyes stood with Speaker Pelosi and his committee produced a bill that did not contain retroactive immunity.

DFA members have stopped the Bush administration from giving telecom companies a get-out-of-jail-free card before and, now, they will do it again,” said Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of Democracy for America.

The folks who put this compromise together – Sen. Rockefeller (WV), Sen. Bond (MO), House Majority Leader Hoyer (MD), and House Minority Whip Blunt (MO) – are on the wrong side of American values,” said Daniel I. Medress, Communications Director of Democracy for America.  “It is a betrayal of the fundamental ideals of our country.  These guys need to decide whether they are on the side of the American people or President Bush.

Come Together

Democracy for America Calls for Democratic Unity

BURLINGTON, VT -- DemocracyForAmerica.com, our nation's largest progressive political action organization, today, in a message to its over 700,000 members, called on Democrats and progressives to unite behind Sen. Barack Obama as the presumptive nominee of the Democratic Party.  What started six months ago in the caucuses in Iowa has produced a phenomenal candidate who is ready to bring Americans together to end the War in Iraq, provide health care to all, and confront the very real threats of global climate change. Democrats, progressives, independents, and Republicans will come together to support Barack Obama and defeat John McCain and the failed policies of George W. Bush.

"This has been a nomination process that no one could have predicted, but it is a process that was controlled by empowered voters who want to put an end to the disastrous leadership of President Bush, Vice President Cheney, and Sen. McCain," said Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America.  "Over 35 million voters participated in Democratic primaries and caucuses because they were energized by the candidates and because they are ready for a change from the discredited and shortsighted Republican vision."

In his message to Democracy for America's members, Jim Dean wrote, "Last night, Barack Obama won the delegates necessary to become the Democratic Nominee. This historic victory is a testament to your hard work and dedication. We're moving America forward into a new era of progressive leadership."

"We are witnesses to an historic and transparent process that has strengthened the Democratic Party and provided us with a candidate who will defeat John McCain and move America back to a position of leadership in the world," said Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of Democracy for America.  "Now that the primaries and caucuses are done, as Democrats, as progressives, as Americans we must unite behind our nominee and work as hard as we can to win the White House and change the world."

Leonard Boswell’s Campaign in Freefall as Election Day Nears

Released: May 30, 2008 10:14 AM

BURLINGTON, VT – DemocracyForAmerica.com, our nation’s largest progressive political action organization, endorsed Ed Fallon for Congress because he offers his 3rd District constituents the leadership and intelligence they need in Washington.   Ed Fallon’s opponent in the June 3rd primary is so out of touch with the needs of Iowans and so scared about losing this election his supporters have started to send false attack mailers to voters.  (In an editorial published on May 29th the Des Moines Register debunks the false attack mailers: http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080529/OPINION03/805290382/1110)

What Leonard Boswell is selling, the voters aren’t buying.” said Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America.  “Races like this are won at the door and over the phone.  Ed Fallon’s grassroots campaign understands this and that is why he is going to win on June 3rd.

Democracy for America will use its grassroots infrastructure in the 3rd District to turn out hundreds of volunteers to participate in get out the vote activities in support of Ed Fallon.  DFA and its members have, time and again, shocked the political establishment by focusing on the neighbor-to-neighbor outreach that is crucial for victory in tough races.  Earlier this year, DFA and its members were instrumental in helping Donna Edwards defeat incumbent Congressman Al Wynn in Maryland.

Ed Fallon’s campaign which is funded by small donations from individuals contrasts with Leonard Boswell’s campaign which is dependent on large contributions from PACs like AT&T and Wal-Mart.  Ed Fallon has excited and energized voters from across the District who have volunteered in large numbers to drive his people-powered campaign to victory in the primary.  While Ed Fallon talks about bringing high-paying jobs to Iowa and fixing our country’s broken health care system and ending the War in Iraq, Leonard Boswell lashes out in a pathetic and vain attempt to confuse voters about his own shoddy record.

Leonard Boswell has had his chance and he has failed.  Leonard Boswell has failed on education, on the environment, on farm issues, and on the War in Iraq,” said Daniel I. Medress, Communications Director of Democracy for America.  “Ed Fallon has the grassroots support and understands the issues that matter to voters.  That is why Ed Fallon was endorsed by the Des Moines Register and why Ed Fallon will win on June 3rd.”

Say It Ain’t So, Joe: Democracy for America and J Street Call on Joe Lieberman To Reject Pastor John Hagee, Withdraw from keynote address to Pastor’s DC Israel Conference in July

Released: May 27, 2008 10:00 AM

BURLINGTON, VT/WASHINGTON, D.C. – DemocracyForAmerica.com, our nation’s largest progressive political action organization, is partnering with J Street, the political arm of the pro-Israel, pro-peace movement, to demand that Sen. Joe Lieberman cut all ties with Pastor John Hagee and "Christians United for Israel”.

Last Thursday, Senator John McCain renounced the endorsement of Pastor Hagee and made it clear that his views are simply out of bounds for mainstream American politics.  Now it’s Joe Lieberman’s turn to follow the lead of his good friend, the Republican nominee for President.

J Street and DFA launched the “Say Ain’t So Joe” petition asking Sen. Lieberman to reject Pastor Hagee’s hatemongering and to refuse to appear at the 2008 Christians United for Israel Washington-Israel Summit this July 22.  Democracy for America and its over 700,000 members and J Street are asking Americans to sign the petition and join the movement to keep Pastor Hagee’s brand of religious intolerance out of American political discourse.

Pastor Hagee has a long and despicable record of hate speech that has been well documented:

On Muslims -- "All Muslims have a mandate to kill Christians and Jews."

On Hurrican Katrina -- "I believe that New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God and they were recipients of the             judgment of God for that."

On Women -- "Do you know the difference between a terrorist and a woman with PMS? You can negotiate with a terrorist."

“Joe Lieberman has been hustled by a hate-filled con-artist who hides behind the cloak of religion to spread a particularly pernicious type of bigotry,” said Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of Democracy for America.  “Does Joe Lieberman have no shame?  Will he stand with a hatemonger and continue to praise this intolerant figure?  Or, will he recognize that Pastor Hagee is no friend of Americans who believe that tolerance and understanding are things that make America great?

There should be no place in American politics – and certainly no place in the American Jewish community – for a man who holds John Hagee’s views,” said Jeremy Ben-Ami, J Street’s Executive Director. “John McCain finally got that on Thursday.  Now it’s time for American Jewish leaders to admit that, for too long, Pastor Hagee’s supposed ‘pro-Israel’ views have bought him a free pass in the Jewish community.  This has to end.  It simply isn’t worth sacrificing core values and principles that the Jewish community holds dear for a political alliance of convenience. And the great irony is, Hagee in the end really isn’t ‘pro-Israel.’ His support for Israel is simply a means to an apocalyptic end of destruction or conversion for the Jewish people.

Democracy for America Starts the Right to Vote Campaign

Released: May 15, 2008 9:50 AM

DFA Mobilizes Members Against Anti-voting Laws

BURLINGTON, VT – DemocracyForAmerica.com, our nation's largest progressive political action organization, today, kicked off the Right to Vote Campaign to stop Republican efforts to require citizens to present government-issued photo identifications before voting.  DFA sent a message to its membership asking them to participate in the multi-pronged campaign to defeat the Republican anti-voting plan.

"The progressive community is not going to sit idly by while Republicans work to dismantle our democracy," said Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America.  "These photo ID laws are just literacy tests dressed up in new clothes."

Two weeks ago, the Supreme Court upheld an Indiana law that requires voters to present a government-issued photo ID before casting a ballot in an election.  Republicans say these laws are designed to protect against voter fraud, but the truth is that this is a solution in search of a problem.  The real aim of these voter ID laws is to disenfranchise traditionally Democratic voters: the elderly, the poor, people of color, and new voters.

Already, six states in addition to Indiana — Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Michigan, and South Dakota — now require voters to show a photo ID before voting.  19 more states are considering passing such requirements.  And, Missouri is trying to take all of this a step further and require voters to prove their citizenship before voting.

In his message to Democracy for America's members, Jim Dean said, "Republicans can't win elections based on their failed philosophies, so, they've latched onto a new plan: make it as hard and expensive as possible for people to exercise their constitutionally protected right to vote.

Democracy for America recognizes that voter ID laws are just the latest attempt to disenfranchise voters and place additional hurdles before citizens who want to participate in our political process.  As a stunning example of how voter ID laws disenfranchise and punish voters, just last week in Indiana, as many as 12 nuns were turned away from their polling place because they did not have photo identifications.

Democracy for America has a long track record of successful grassroots action.  DFA has helped elect over 550 progressives to office from Governor Deval Patrick in Massachusetts to Rep. Jerry McNerney in California's 11th Congressional District.  DFA has been instrumental in the ongoing fight to block President Bush's attempt to grant retroactive immunity to the telecommunications companies that participated in his illegal wiretapping program.

"The Right to Vote Campaign starts today with a petition that will be delivered to Democratic legislators and it will continue with online and offline action to beat back this outrageous attempt by Republicans to strip people of their right to vote," said Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of Democracy for America.  "DFA and its members will be active across the country and, together, we will protect the right to vote."

Democracy for America Members Mobilize to Stop Voter ID Law

Missouri Voter ID: A Solution in Search of a Problem

BURLINGTON, VT – DemocracyForAmerica.com, our nation's largest progressive political action organization, is standing firm in its opposition to Missouri's House Joint Resolution 48; a resolution that would require voters to prove citizenship before exercising their constitutionally guaranteed right to vote.  This morning, DFA sent a message to its Missouri members calling on  them to contact their state Senators and demand that they vote No on HJR 48.

"HJR 48 is as bad as it is unnecessary," said Jim Dean, Chair of DFA.  "HJR 48 is a big government power grab that will disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of American citizens."

Republicans forced the resolution through the Missouri House of Representatives over the weekend and it will likely be voted on by the Senate this afternoon.  The resolution will force American citizens who vote in Missouri to prove their citizenship by presenting an approved form of government-issued photo identification.

"It's a sad day when the General Assembly spends the people's time crafting legislation that is intended to disenfranchise elderly and poor citizens," said State Senator Joan Bray (St. Louis), an opponent of HJR 48.  "My Republican colleagues try to talk a good game about protecting elections, but in the end this is just another example of big government run amok."

Democracy for America recognizes that voter ID laws are just the latest attempt to disenfranchise voters and place additional hurdles before citizens who want to participate in our political process.  HJR 48 follows in a long line of measures designed to prevent people from voting.  Like poll taxes and literacy tests, voter ID laws are intended not to protect the integrity of elections, but to disenfranchise traditionally Democratic voters.  As a stunning example of how voter ID laws disenfranchise and punish voters, just last week in Indiana, as many as 12 nuns were turned away from their polling place because they did not have photo identifications.

"Republicans know the American people have rejected their failed philosophies, so, all they have left is to stop as many people as possible from voting," said Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of Democracy for America.  "HJR 48 is a despicable and desperate attempt by Republicans to win an election through Draconian means when they can't win on their own merits."

Mario Diaz-Balart Discovers Working Men and Women

Released: May 2, 2008 9:35 AM

Republican Shocked to Learn that Individuals Care About Their Community

BURLINGTON -- DemocracyForAmerica.com, our nation’s largest progressive political action organization, endorsed Joe Garcia for the U.S. House because, unlike his opponent, he knows it’s the job of a Congressman to represent his constituents and not just high-dollar donors, lobbyists, and corporate PACs.  Rep. Diaz-Balart, being unfamiliar with the idea of small-dollar donations from individuals concerned about their neighborhoods and country, tried to make a controversy out of Joe Garcia’s robust fundraising.

In yesterday’s Miami Herald, Lesley Clark reported that U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart is accusing Joe Garcia of 'hiding' the source of campaign contributions.  As the article makes clear, campaign finance regulations do not require disclosure of donors' identities for contributions under $200.

Joe Garcia is supported by real men and women who give $5, $10, or $20 contributions. This manufactured attack shows how little respect Mario Diaz-Balart has for small-dollar donors,” said Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America.

Mario Diaz-Balart is, once again, showing how out-of-touch and unfit he is to serve in the United State House of Representatives,” said Wendy Sejour, resident of Florida’s 25th Congressional District.

Democracy for America has helped Joe Garcia raise over $30,000 from over 1000 donors for an average contribution of $28.  These small-dollar donations have made his campaign a true threat and that is why Rep. Diaz-Balart is now blindly lashing out and making ridiculous, false accusations.

Mario Diaz-Balart has been living in his ivory tower for too long,” said Daniel I. Medress, Communications Director of Democracy for America.  “Rep. Diaz-Balart is frighteningly misinformed about how campaigns work and this is further proof that his days of misrepresenting South Florida are numbered.

Democracy for America Endorses Roy Carter for the United States House of Representatives

Released: Apr 30, 2008 9:23 AM

BURLINGTON, VT – DemocracyForAmerica.com, our nation's largest progressive political action organization, has endorsed Roy Carter's campaign for the United States House of Representatives.

"Roy Carter, unlike his Republican opponent, will be able to give the 5th Congressional District what it needs in Washington: a dedicated and intelligent advocate for working men and women," said Jim Dean, Chair of DFA.  "Roy Carter will represent all his constituents and not just big-money donors, corporate PACs, and lobbyists."

A native resident of Western North Carolina and a lifelong Democrat, Roy Carter has been a public school educator for the past 40 years. In addition to being a classroom teacher, Roy Carter was the Head Coach of the North Wilkes High School football team and has served the students of Ashe, Wilkes, and Surry counties—all of which are in the 5th Congressional District. Roy Carter has dedicated his life to educating young people and motivating them to achieve their goals by being a positive and affirming influence in their lives.  Leading by example, he has volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, working to build homes for hard working families.  Through his leadership and innovation several student and community programs were created to combat drop-out rates, drug and alcohol abuse, and illiteracy.

As a Congressman, Roy Carter will give the people of the 5th Congressional District the leadership they need and deserve.  Mr. Carter will be the kind of Congressman who will stand up for what is right, tell you the plain truth, and never forget that the trust, needs, and best interests of his constituents are more important than anything any special interest could offer.

Roy Carter is committed to bridging the partisan divide that has polarized the 5th District and our country for too many years. Mr. Carter’s opponent, Virginia Foxx, is nothing more than a mean and out-of-touch mouthpiece for the Bush administration.  She has voted against such important legislation as the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), Head Start, and aid to the victims of hurricane Katrina.

Her insensitivity to the needs and concerns of her constituents even extends to insulting relatives of soldiers who have been killed while bravely serving the United States in uniform in Iraq.  Rep. Foxx’s office, not only, refused to meet with Summer Lipford, a gold star mother in Statesville whose son, PFC Steven F. Sirko, was killed in Iraq, but went so far as to belittle Ms. Lipford’s fallen son.  Rep. Foxx’s office brushed Ms. Lipford off by saying that her son was just a paid volunteer and his death in Iraq was not worthy of a meeting.

I am proud to be the Democracy for America Grassroots All-Star and to have received the support of so many concerned citizens in our district and throughout our country,” said Roy Carter. “Voters are speaking loud and clear. They have responded to my campaign’s message by an overwhelming margin because they want a leader who believes that people always come before politics.

"Roy Carter served his community for 40 years as a public school teacher and coach and now he is ready to serve in the halls of Congress," said Daniel I. Medress, Communications Director of DFA.  "Roy Carter’s opponent, Virginia Foxx, has failed the 5th District time and again.  Roy Carter’s grassroots campaign and its commitment to the culture of activism will mop the floor with Virginia Foxx in November."

Democracy for America Endorses Richard Holober for Assembly

Released: Apr 22, 2008 9:17 AM

BURLINGTON, VT – DemocracyForAmerica.com, our nation's largest progressive political action organization, announced Tuesday that it has endorsed Richard Holober, Democrat for California’s 19th State Assembly seat.

"Richard Holober is a proven champion for better schools, environmental protection, and affordable health care.  Democracy for America is proud to endorse his campaign," said Jim Dean, Chair of DFA.  "Richard Holober is just the type of leader we need in Sacramento."

Richard is an education leader who knows what it takes to improve California's public schools. He has 14 years of experience on the San Mateo County Community College Board and the Millbrae School Board. He successfully reduced classroom overcrowding and updated curriculum so students can be successful in a changing economy.

As a member of the State Assembly, Richard will stand up to the Republicans who are trying to cut education funding at all levels, including K-12, community colleges, state colleges and universities.

Richard Holober has been at the forefront in the fight for universal health care coverage and affordable prescription drugs, and he successfully fought for better protections for H.M.O. patients. He has the experience and independence to stand up to the insurance companies and drug companies.

Richard will work hard to protect our air, land and water. He was a leader in the fight to stop the clear cutting of old-growth redwood forests, and has supported legislation to make toxic polluters pay for clean up costs. He has led the San Mateo County Community College District in its pioneering "green building" program for new classroom construction, which has dramatically reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

"I'm proud to be supported by Democracy for America, because it is a refection of my commitment to Democratic values," said Richard Holober. "As the grassroots Democratic candidate, DFA support means a great deal to me. Together we can prove that grassroots campaigning can overcome the biggest special interests -- and our victory will result in more progressive policy and good government.

"Richard Holober is a strong, progressive candidate with the skills and experience needed in the California Assembly," said Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of DFA.  "Richard Holober will be the people’s advocate for universal health care, education reform, and he will be a leader on issues like renewable energy and protecting the environment."

"This is going to be a tough race and I am incredibly proud to have the support of Democracy for America," said Mark Leno.  “My campaign is powered by the people of my District and DFA understands how important this is and that is why I know with their support we will be victorious."

"Mark Leno will work for progressive solutions on renewable energy, universal health care, marriage equality, and Clean Money campaign finance reform," said Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of DFA.  "Mark Leno’s work as a community advocate, a county supervisor, and a state assemblymember shows that he has the experience and vision to deliver for his constituents and the state."

Democracy for America Endorses Jack Markell for Governor

Released: Apr 10, 2008 12:09 PM

BURLINGTON, VT – DemocracyForAmerica.com, our nation's largest progressive political action organization, announced Monday that it has endorsed Jack Markell's campaign for governor.

"Jack Markell has a proven record as Delaware’s State Treasurer, having worked on helping Delawareans of all income levels take control of their financial lives. Democracy for America is proud to endorse his campaign," said Jim Dean, Chair of DFA.  "Jack Markell’s work as a public official and his experience in the private sector make him uniquely qualified to lead Delaware."

Jack Markell has been State Treasurer for nine years after having a very successful business career. He understands the diverse issues facing Delaware and has proposed bold solutions, such as guaranteeing every Delawarean will have affordable, quality health insurance and creating 25,000 jobs in his first term.

Jack Markell is ready to lead and bring the kind of change that is needed in Dover.  Jack has spent time in communities around the state, listening to Delawareans talk about their financial problems and has fought to implement changes that have a real impact on their lives. Over the past few years, he has worked to bring banking into Delaware’s schools, help people claim the tax credits they deserve and start new programs to improve healthcare for state workers. Additionally, he developed the Delaware Money School, which offers hundreds of free classes each year to teach people basic financial literacy skills at no cost to taxpayers.

After earning degrees in economics and development studies from Brown University, Jack took a job with the First National Bank of Chicago and went to school at night, earning an MBA from the University of Chicago. As the thirteenth employee of Nextel, he served as Senior Vice President for Corporate Development and helped launched the company to global prominence.

"I am honored to be endorsed by Democracy for America; an organization committed to the kind of socially progressive and fiscally responsible ideology that drives my work," said Jack Markell.  "With DFA's help, we will take our message of positive change to all Delawareans."

Mario Diaz-Balart is Out of Touch

Released: Apr 10, 2008 11:57 AM

Rep. Diaz-Balart lashes out at Joe Garcia

BURLINGTON, VT -- Democracy for America, our nation's largest progressive political action organization, endorsed Joe Garcia’s campaign to represent Florida’s 25th Congressional District because his mainstream, progressive approach stands in stark contrast to the reactionary views of failed Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart.  Joe Garcia offers Floridians a real choice in this election cycle and his long record of service to the cause of Cuban freedom means that all Mario Diaz-Balart can bring to the table is character attacks and blustery language.  Unlike Mario Diaz-Balart, Joe Garcia is ready to lead on important issues like bringing health care to all Americans, expanding opportunities for good middle-class jobs, and ending the War in Iraq.

In yesterday’s Miami Herald, Mario Diaz-Balart accused Joe Garcia of being a left-wing extremist for associating with United States Congressman and Korean War hero Charles Rangel.  The reality is  Rep. Diaz-Balart is out of touch.  Rep. Diaz-Balart has no plan for health care, no plan to bring more jobs to South Florida, and has no plan to end the War in Iraq.  Rep. Diaz-Balart is a lapdog for the Bush administration and has consistently sided with the Ann Coulter wing of the Republican Party.

No one has ever accused Rep. Diaz-Balart of being an effective Congressman, but his new attack on Joe Garcia shows what an empty suit he is,” said Daniel I. Medress, Communications Director for Democracy for America.  “Joe Garcia is talking about the issues that matter to South Floridians and Mario Diaz-Balart is running a negative campaign because he can’t talk about the issues because he has nothing to offer but failed leadership and empty rhetoric.”

Democracy for America Endorses Anne Dicker for Pennsylvania State Senate

Released: Mar 31, 2008 11:50 AM

BURLINGTON, VT -- Democracy for America, our nation's largest progressive political action organization, has endorsed Anne Dicker’s campaign for the Pennsylvania State Senate.

"Anne Dicker is just the type of citizen-activist we need in office," said Jim Dean, Chair of DFA.  "Anne Dicker has a long history of working for progressive solutions on the grassroots level and Democracy for America is proud to endorse her campaign.”

Anne Dicker is a political organizer, neighborhood advocate, and co-founder of Philly for Dean, Philly for Change, and PA for Democracy.   As the next Senator to represent the 1st District, she will be a strong voice for reform. She is uniquely qualified to break from the old idea of self service over public service and restore a culture of open, honest, fair, and ethical hard work for the benefit of ever6yone in the 1st District.

I have been involved with Democracy for America since its inception and I know just how important this endorsement is.  I am grateful to have the support of DFA and its 675,000 members,” said Anne Dicker.  “With DFA’s help, we will win this primary and go on to victory in November.”

The Democracy for America endorsement is a clear sign of the momentum building behind Anne Dicker’s campaign.  DFA is the key endorsement in this race, bringing donations from progressives and providing volunteers to participate in door-to-door, grassroots outreach.  A national endorsement such as this will focus the attention of DFA’s 675,000 members on this race and is another indication of the support coalescing around Anne Dicker.

Anne Dicker is a great candidate and her campaign with its focus on neighbor-to-neighbor canvassing and grassroots organizing is a perfect example of a people-powered campaign," said Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of DFA.  “Democracy for America is supporting Anne Dicker because she is the kind of candidate committed to her constituents and still believes in the idea of government of the people, by the people, and for the people.”

Democracy for America Responds to Sen. James Inhofe

Released: Mar 31, 2008 11:34 AM

Once again, the Senator shows how out of touch he is

BURLINGTON, VT -- Democracy for America, our nation's largest progressive political action organization, endorsed Andrew Rice's campaign to represent Oklahoma in the United States Senate and Sen. James Inhofe is scared. Less than 24-hours after DFA sent a message to its 675,000 members on behalf of Andrew Rice, Sen. Inhofe's campaign sent out a fundraising email that shows just how little he understands about the growing culture of activism that is changing the political landscape in Oklahoma and across the country.  Sen. James Inhofe is, once again, showing why he is unfit to serve and unworthy of another term.

In the email sent by Sen. Inhofe's campaign, he tries to hide his extremist views and instead lashes out at Democracy for America.  Sen. Inhofe tries to claim he is a conservative, but the facts of his record are clear: he is a Republican extremist with beliefs that put him at odds with a majority of Oklahomans and Americans.

Sen. Inhofe claimed that Global Warming is "the second-largest hoax ever played on the American people, after the separation of church and state."  He believes the Weather Channel is behind the hoax to attract viewers.  And he's compared environmentalists to "Nazis" and the Environmental Protection Agency to the "Gestapo."

Sen. Inhofe was one of only nine senators to vote against banning torture on individuals in U.S. Government custody.  In fact, during the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse investigation, he was "outraged by the outrage" over the revelations of abuse.

Anti-Equality, anti-choice, Sen. Inhofe is even anti-college loans.  And in March 2002, he suggested that the 9/11 terrorist attacks were a form of divine retribution against the U.S. for failing to defend Israel.

"Sen. Inhofe is not a conservative, but just a mean, out-of-touch man with beliefs and opinions that are contradicted by reality, science, and plain old commonsense," said Daniel I. Medress, Communications Director of Democracy for America.  "Andrew Rice offers Oklahomans something they do not get from Sen. Inhofe: a sane legislator with mainstream ideas and the energy to get the job done."

Democracy for America Endorses Andrew Rice for the United States Senate

Released: Mar 27, 2008 11:23 AM

BURLINGTON, VT -- Democracy for America, our nation's largest progressive political action organization, has endorsed Andrew Rice’s campaign for the United States Senate.

"Andrew Rice has a proven record in the Oklahoma State Senate having worked on issues like health care, veteran’s rights, and the environment.  Democracy for America is proud to endorse his campaign," said Jim Dean, Chair of DFA.  "Andrew’s opponent, James Inhofe, has lost touch with the needs of his constituents and reality.  In James Inhofe, you have a guy who denies global warming, calls environmentalists ‘Nazis’, and thinks it’s fine for our government to torture people.”

Andrew Rice is a state Senator and community leader who can bring real change to Oklahoma and fix Washington.  Andrew was inspired to become involved in government and politics after his brother was murdered during the horrific events of September 11th.  He believes our country is going in the wrong direction and is ready to do all he can to be a voice for Oklahomans.

In the Oklahoma State Senate, Andrew Rice has been a leader on the issues that affect the lives of real people.  In Washington, he will be a leader on key issues like providing all Americans access to excellent health care, ensuring we respect the sacrifices made by our brave men and women in uniform, and protecting families from failed Republican economic policies.

As a challenger to a well-funded incumbent, I am grateful to have the support of Democracy for America and its citizen-activists,” said Andrew Rice.  “With DFA’s help, we will defeat my opponent and start to find solutions to the problems the he has denied for so long.”

Democracy for America is the key endorsement in this race, bringing donations from progressives and providing volunteers to participate in door-to-door, grassroots outreach.  The DFA Training Academy has trained tens of thousands of activists across the country in the strategies and tactics of successful campaigns and will be coming to Norman, Oklahoma this weekend. (http://www.dfalink.com/oktraining)

Andrew Rice is a strong, progressive candidate and his people-powered campaign will put an end to the disastrous Senate career of James Inhofe.  We have a war to end, important health care legislation to pass, and important work to do," said Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of DFA.  “Andrew Rice, unlike his opponent, understands this and is ready to lead.”

Debbie Wasserman Schultz Forgets Who Her Friends Are

Released: Mar 24, 2008 1:16 PM

DFA Calls on Rep. Wasserman Schultz to Support Democrats in Florida

BURLINGTON, VT -- Democracy for America, our nation's largest progressive political action organization, is calling on Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz to be removed as the Chair of the Red to Blue program.  Rep. Wasserman Schultz is refusing to campaign on behalf of Democrats running against incumbent Republicans in south Florida.  The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's Red to Blue program works to defeat incumbent Republicans throughout the country and is an essential component in the effort to expand the Democratic majority in the House of Representatives.

Joe Garcia – a Democracy for America endorsed candidate – running in Florida's 25th Congressional District against Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, Annette Taddeo running in the 18th CD against Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, and Raul Martinez running in the 21st CD against Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart are being denied crucial support from Rep. Wasserman Schultz.  All three candidates have been endorsed by such Democrats as Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, Majority Whip James Clyburn, Democratic Caucus Chair  Rahm Emanuel, and DCCC Chair Chris Van Hollen.

"How can Debbie Wasserman Schultz be the head of  the Red to Blue program and not be willing to fight Republicans in her own backyard?," said Daniel I. Medress, Communications Director for Democracy for America.  "She has to step down as chair of the Red to Blue program or be removed from that position by the DCCC."

Rep. Wasserman Schultz's attempt to remain neutral in these Congressional races is perplexing in light of comments she made in 2005.  At that time, she backed Ron Klein's successful challenge of Republican incumbent Clay Shaw in Florida.  Rep. Wasserman Schultz said, "It's not good for my relationship with Clay Shaw, but Democrats can't afford to leave a seat like that uncontested."

"There is important work to be done like ending the War in Iraq, providing health care to all Americans, and combating the effects of global warming.  Either Rep. Wasserman Schultz wants to be part of the culture of activism that is changing the political dynamic of this country or she wants to be part of the tired culture of incumbency that has brought us war, debt, and 50 million uninsured Americans," said Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America.

Whose Side is Silvestre Reyes On?

Released: Mar 12, 2008 3:39 PM

DFA runs full-page ad targeting Rep. Reyes on telecom immunity

BURLINGTON, VT -- Democracy for America, our nation’s largest progressive political action organization, is running a full-page ad in the Thursday edition of the El Paso Times.  The ad is directed at Rep. Silvestre Reyes, the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.  Rep. Reyes has made numerous comments indicating he is “open” to granting what he calls “blanket immunity” to the telecommunications companies who participated in President Bush’s program of warrantless wiretapping.  DFA has been leading the effort to block the Bush administration’s attempt to provide retroactive immunity.

Last week, Democracy for America Political Director Charles Chamberlain sent a message to DFA’s 675,000 members asking them to take action and call Rep. Reyes:

He needs to know we are counting on him. He needs to know that if he won’t stand up to

President Bush, then DFA members will find someone to replace him who will.

The message to DFA members resulted in thousands of phone calls to Rep. Reyes’ offices in El Paso and Washington.

By the end of the day, Jeremy Bash, the Chief Counsel to the House Intelligence Committee, called Democracy for America to discuss Rep. Reyes’ position on retroactive immunity.  On behalf of Rep. Reyes, Mr. Bash provided a statement to DFA indicating that the Chairman was not changing his position and was still open to immunity.

A majority of Democrats in the House and Senate are opposed to retroactive telecom immunity.  From Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to Sen. Chris Dodd, Democrats have been unified against giving AT&T, Verizon, and President Bush a get out of jail free card.  Even Bill Foster, a self-described Blue Dog who just won a special election to fill the remainder of Dennis Hastert’s term, is not in favor of granting immunity.

Richard Clarke (former head of counterterrorism at the National Security Council), Rand Beers (former Senior Director for Combating Terrorism at the National Security Council), Lt. Gen. Don Kerrick (former Deputy National Security Advisor), and Suzanne Spaulding (former assistant general counsel at the CIA) recently sent a letter to Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell expressing their opposition to telecom immunity:

Telecommunications companies will continue to cooperate with lawful government requests, particularly since FISA orders legally compel cooperation with the government. Again, it is unclear to us that the immunity debate will affect our surveillance capabilities.

The intelligence community currently has the tools it needs to acquire surveillance of new targets and methods of communication.

Rep. Reyes has a clear choice to make.  Is he with the American people, the US Constitution, and experienced intelligence officials or is he with President Bush and his cronies?,” said Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America.  Telecom immunity is a sham that the President is using to hide his illegal activities and scare people for political gain."

Iowa Deserves Better Than Leonard Boswell

Released: Mar 12, 2008 3:34 PM

Released On: March 10, 2008

BURLINGTON, VT – Democracy for America, our nation's largest progressive political action organization, endorsed Ed Fallon's campaign for Congress last month and Leonard Boswell is scared.  Fallon is challenging Boswell in the Democratic primary to represent Iowa's 3rd Congressional District.  There is good reason for Rep. Boswell to be worried: an unimpressive Congressional record coupled with his support for the failed policies of the Bush administration.

Since first being elected to Congress in 1996, Boswell has only managed to get 2 bills out of committee and enacted into law.  2 bills in 12 years; the change Iowa need in Washington is not going to happen with Leonard Boswell.

"Leonard Boswell has been trapped in the Washington insider culture for 12 years and that is just not going to cut it," said Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America.  "Rep. Boswell is part of a go-along, get-along Congress that has allowed President Bush, the Republican Party, and corporate special interests to run roughshod over our economy and our Constitution."

While Rep. Boswell has not been introducing legislation, he has been voting for a host of unsound and unpopular Bush policies.  He voted for the War in Iraq and has voted for each and every one of the President's bills to fund it. He voted for the Patriot Act and has been a champion of retroactive immunity for the telecommunications companies that participated in the President's program of warrantless wiretapping.

And, he has done this while collecting boatloads of cash from Washington PACs and lobbyists.  In fact, 74% of his campaign contributions have come from the political action committees of companies like AT&T and Wal-Mart.

"We not only need more Democrats, but better Democrats," said Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of Democracy for America.  "Ed Fallon is an experienced legislator who unlike Leonard Boswell will represent his constituents and not his corporate donors."

Rep. Silvestre Reyes: Deal or No Deal?

Released: Mar 5, 2008 11:50 AM

DFA Members Tell Rep. Reyes No Telecom Immunity

BURLINGTON, VT – Democracy for America, our nation's largest progressive political action organization, is putting the pressure on House Intelligence Committee Chairman Silvestre Reyes (D – TX).  Rep. Reyes indicated he is open to a deal with the White House on immunity for the telecommunications companies who participated in President Bush program of warrantless wiretapping.  DFA members are calling Rep. Reyes' Washington and El Paso offices demanding that he stand with Speaker Pelosi and the majority of
House Democrats against telecom immunity.

"In just a few hours, Democracy for America members have made
thousands of calls to Rep. Reyes letting him know he has a duty to uphold the Constitution
," said DFA Chair Jim Dean.  "House Democrats have been firm in their opposition to telecom immunity and Rep. Reyes should follow their lead."

Earlier today, Democracy for America Political Director Charles Chamberlain sent a message to DFA's 675,000 members asking them to take action and call Rep. Reyes:
He needs to know we are counting on him. He needs to know that if he won't stand up to President Bush, then DFA members will find someone to replace him who will.
DFA is supporting Ed Fallon, an opponent of telecom immunity, in his primary challenge of incumbent Bush-Democrat Leonard Boswell in Iowa's 3rd Congressional District.  Rep. Boswell has already voted for telecom immunity.  Last month, Democracy for America was instrumental in Donna Edwards' primary victory over incumbent Bush-Democrat Al Wynn in Maryland's 4th Congressional District.

A staffer at Rep. Reyes' El Paso office told a caller that no decision on telecom immunity had been made and she could not imagine why Rep Reyes would go against his close friend Speaker Pelosi.  Grassroots pressure from Democracy for America members has been essential at every stage of the battle to stop telecom immunity.

"Rep. Reyes has a choice: is he with the American people or is he with President Bush and his cronies from AT&T and Verizon," said Democracy for America Executive Director Arshad Hasan.  "We hope Rep Reyes makes the right decision."

Democracy for America Endorses Joe Garcia for the United States House of Representatives

Released: Mar 5, 2008 11:45 AM

Released On: February 28, 2008

BURLINGTON, VT – Democracy for America, our nation's largest progressive political action organization, has endorsed Joe Garcia's campaign to represent Florida's Twenty-fifth Congressional District.

"Joe Garcia is a tough, dynamic Democrat and Democracy for America is proud to endorse his campaign for Congress," said Jim Dean, Chair of DFA. "Joe's opponent, Mario Diaz-Balart, has lost touch with the needs of his constituents and has been a consistent vote for the failed policies of the Bush administration. Rep. Diaz-Balart even voted three times against health care for kids because he didn't want to offend his tobacco lobbyist buddies. Joe Garcia offers the type of leadership the district needs in Washington."

Joe Garcia is a community leader who has the vision to bring real change to South Florida and help fix Washington. Joe worked his way through the University of Miami Law School while serving as director of the Exodus Project of the Cuban American National Foundation. Joe continued this work after law school, traveling to 17 countries to meet with dozens of world leaders, reuniting thousands of families that had been scattered throughout the world.
In 1991, Joe was appointed Chairman of the Florida Public Service Commission where he led the deregulation of the state's telecommunications industry, which led to lower prices for consumers. Later on, he worked closely with state lawmakers from both parties to sign the largest energy rate cut in Florida's history.

For 20 years, Joe Garcia has been a leader on the issues that affect the lives of real people. In Washington, he will be a leader on key issues like strengthening our middle class, providing all Americans excellent health care, and re-establishing America as the moral and economic world leader.

"Across the country DFA is making a difference by motivating young people to become actively involved in politics.  The work of DFA is important to our community because it advocates a new kind of politics; one that breaks from the divisive special interest politics of the past," said Joe Garcia.  "It is an honor to have the endorsement of such an important national organization that is committed to promoting the kind of grassroots activism that will lead to real change in South Florida."

Democracy for America is a key endorsement in this race, bringing hundreds of donations from progressives around the country and providing volunteers to participate in door-to-door, grassroots outreach. The DFA Training Academy has trained tens of thousands of activists across the country in the strategies and tactics of successful campaigns and will be coming to Miami in
July.

"Joe Garcia supports progressive values like ending the War in Iraq, expanding access to affordable health care and, protecting the economic well-being of working men and women. DFA will stand with candidates who stand up for progressive values." said Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of DFA.
