Released: Jun 30, 2005 12:06 PM

Candidate for Mayor of San Diego, California

BURLINGTON, VT -- This week, Democracy for America (DFA) endorsed Donna Frye for Mayor of San Diego, California -- making her a member of the DFA-List, Candidates for America. Each DFA-List candidate encompasses the true spirit of grassroots democracy, fiscal responsibility, and social progress. They are individuals who are dedicated to changing America from the ground up.

"Donna Frye has proven that she is determined to bring fiscal responsibility and government accountability back to the city of San Diego," said Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America. "Her record of leadership is one worth following, and we are honored to have her as part of our DFA-List."

Donna Frye won her first race for city council of San Diego, and quickly made a mark with her tenacious commitment to open government and accountability of government spending. But looming problems in the city's pension system -- problems she warned about as early as 2002 -- led to revelations about mismanagement, and ultimately the resignation of the incumbent mayor. Now, Donna is determined to bring fiscal responsibility to the city of San Diego with her honest and effective leadership as mayor. The special election is July 26, 2005.

Statement From Jim Dean On President Bush's Speech

Released: Jun 29, 2005 3:56 PM

BURLINGTON, VT -- Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America (DFA), issued the following statement today in response to President Bush's speech last night:

"The American people deserve an honest leader. But, as last night proved, President Bush does not plan on filling those shoes.

"Last night, the president had the opportunity to address the nation with a real plan for the war in Iraq -- but instead, he offered the same old rhetoric with no real solution. He continued to exploit America's sadness and outrage toward 9/11 as justification for the war claiming that waging the fight in Iraq is containing terrorist.

"But, the unfortunate reality is that Osama bin Laden is still free and Iraq has now become a breeding ground for terrorist camps.

"The American public deserves better, and our troops deserve better. We will only win this war on terror when our political leaders are truthful about the risks and held accountable for their mistakes."

Jim Dean Responds to Vice President Cheney's Attack On His Family

Released: Jun 15, 2005 2:58 PM

BURLINGTON, VT -- On Monday, Vice President Dick Cheney made the following statement about Gov. Howard Dean on the FOX News Channel's "Hannity and Colmes:"

"Maybe his mother loved him, but I've never met anybody who does."

Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America (DFA), issued the following statement today in response to the attack on his family:

"Vice President Cheney's claim that no one -- except for my mother -- has ever loved Howard is nothing but a childish attack. Apparently, he hasn't been introduced to the hundreds of thousands of Democracy for America members and former "Dean for America" activists throughout the country.

"Instead of wasting the American public's time talking about my brother's popularity -- Vice President Cheney should be discussing the administration's plans on bringing solvency to our Social Security system, providing quality, affordable health care for all Americans, and an actual exit strategy for the Iraq War.

"My brother is dedicated to changing this country from the bottom-up by putting the power back in the hands of the people. I love him for this, millions of activist across the country love him for this -- and my mother loves him for this."

Democracy for America launched a fundraising drive today -- The Bat Is Back! Proceeds raised will go toward spreading the word about the Downing Street Memo and the Secret UK Eyes Only briefing paper that prove the Bush administration "fixed" the facts in their argument for the war on Iraq.

Democracy for America is a political action committee dedicated to building a grassroots network of fiscally responsible and socially progressive activists and candidates running for all levels of office.
