My personal volunteering highlight:
When I was working for President Obama's campaign in North Dakota, I was very active in recruiting volunteers and engaging in direct voter contact. There is not one discrete event that I would consider inspirational. Rather, I considered my entire time in North Dakota to be inspirational. Most of the people I spoke with regarding President Obama were courteous, polite, and interested in having a discussion regarding important social and economics problems and how the presidential candidates would handle each issue. Surprisingly, very few North Dakotoans I spoke with were apathetic about politics; indeed, most seemed to be re-energized by the pre-Reagan promise that government can be there to help its citizens. That atmosphere of hopefullness in the middle of a conservative state was very reassuring and inspirational.
More about my volunteering with DFA:
I am not active in Democracy for America, but I was an early and enthusiastic supporter of Governor Dean's 2004 presidential bid. I was a volunteer and then intern in Wisconsin, Iowa, and New Hampshire. It was one of the most thrilling times in my life.
More about my volunteering with progressive organizations:
I am active in the Democratic Party of Brown County. I volunteer at party functions and assist the state party when they hold functions in our County. Overall, I just help out when the county chairman needs help.
More about my work on current campaigns and issues:
I have been volunteering my time, calling various U.S. Senate offices to lobby for the Employee Free Choice Act and for a robust public option in health care reform.
What motivates me:
An innate desire to help those less fortunate than me has always been my biggest motivator. This desire to help others came from my mother, my maternal grandparents, and my church priest (a firebrand liberal Episcopalian). Nothing gets me more upset than systemic injustice and economic inequality enshrined into our society.
How I try to motivate others:
Several friends in my community have been encouraging me to re-start the now-defunct Fort Howard Neighborhood Association, with the intent that it may bring our neighborhood closer together - I might do this. Most of my recent motivation work was done while working for the Obama campaign in North Dakota and on other political campaigns. I still correspond with some of my best volunteers, who became good friends.
Where I see myself in five years:
If I am not mayor of Green Bay, I see myself attending law school in the San Francisco area and becoming active in community and progressive issue/candidate groups there.
My suggested bumper sticker slogan for the Stand with Dr. Dean campaign:
Public Option - Keep Insurers Honest!

Participation in the blogosphere is important because...
Participation is important because it stimulates politically interested persons to participate in meaningful discussions and/or debates on issues of the day. Without this intellectual stimulation, liberals might be less inclined to get active in their own communities, assist in a candidate or issue campaign, or run for office themselves.
A Little Bit About Erik the Red
My name is Erik Eisenheim. I was raised in Marinette, Wisconsin by my grandparents, both of whom represent some of the last liberal Republicans in existence. These days I live in Green Bay, located about 45 miles south of Marinette, with a population of around 109,000 people. I am the son of a socialist mom and an Eisenhower-Republican dad (deceased). I have always been interested in progressive politics and debating issues of the day with friends and family. My favorite politician currently living is Russ Feingold and favorite politicians of all are Franklin Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson, and Sam Rayburn. I am a senior on leave of absence from Lawrence University in nearly Appleton, Wisconsin. Upon my return to Lawrence, I will complete Bachelor degrees in Government, Economics, and Organ Performance. In the meantime, I am completing an associate degree program in paralegal studies at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Why I Deserve a Scholarship to Attend
I want my life to be about spurning progressive change in the United States. Our nation is being "dumbed-down" due in part to the consolidation of media ownership and the usurpation of good journalism with cheap ratings grabs. While the internet is quickly becoming the most prevalent (and best) method of communication and news generation, television and radio still have a great deal of influence on popular culture. It is imperative that liberals lead the charge against concentrated media ownership and lazy journalism. I will be writing my honor's thesis at Lawrence on the dangers of media ownership consolidation and the inherent Constitutional violations it creates. Upon graduating from Lawrence, I plan to run for mayor of Green Bay. Our city, which posses a great history and which is ethnically diverse, is run by (with a few exceptions) conservative officials who wrap themselves in the cloak of a supposedly non-partisan office. Ever since I was a child, I wanted to be mayor of Green Bay, and upon graduation from Lawrence, I feel that I will have the necessary qualifications to run for the office.
