Name: Laura
Location: Cape Coral, FL

My personal volunteering highlight:

I was the Lee County Coordinator for the Reform Party during the 1996 election cycle. I managed this operation from my lovely home in "Heritage" Farms, acquiring media attention and an 11% vote for the Reform Party candidate Ross Perot.

More about my volunteering with DFA:

I have just recently joined, particularly over the latest health care debate. I have no current projects other than my internet advocacy.

What motivates me:

I am also a news junky and a keen listener, which is a burden to me because I hear the numerous contradictions from many of our elected officials. The hypocrisy is rampant and I can't sit by and idly listen without saying and doing something.

My keen insight allows me to see potential train wrecks and the burden of feeling a sense of responsibility to set about offering an alternative course of action.

I have seen my once solid place in society diminish to where it is today, that of an indigent individual whose potential has been stifled by conflicting concerns. As Abraham Maslow purported, our destiny should be to put ourselves in a position where we can truly practice altruism without harming ourselves. That is the lofty goal I have always set for myself and one that I deeply wish for everyone. From the core of my being, I cannot give up this fight.

How I try to motivate others:

I am notorious among my internet connections for internet advocacy. In fact, I am still known for the vast email solicitations since that 1996 campaign when the internet was just gaining popularity.

Where I see myself in five years:

In Maryland, working on my Masters and hopefully in a secure internship, perhaps in the Non-profit sector or the State or Local government. After the 1996 campaign was over, I came to believe that if I became part of the elected body of the Federal Government I would merely become part of the problem. I suppose I am now more realist than idealist, although my heart never gives up on humanity.

My suggested bumper sticker slogan for the Stand with Dr. Dean campaign:

Citizens vs. Insurance Companies and Lobbies - Capitalism at its Best

Blogging

I contribute posts to these blogs:

Participation in the blogosphere is important because...

We, as American Citizens, have a duty to our fellow human beings to speak out and participate from our hearts, not our egos, on matters that touch all our lives.

A Little Bit About Laura

I am an intelligent, passionate advocate, a former C-Span junkie, an an insightful individual with a lot of experience, knowledge and capabilities with a strong desire to finally complete my Master's Degree in Social Work. I graduated from UMBC in 1993 and got side-tracked after moving to Florida in 1995 with the 1996 campaign in which I was the Reform Party Coordinator for Lee County and the publisher of our family-owned magazine called Family Values. Now, I find myself financially devastated at an age where I have no option but to re-ignite my passion for righting the wrongs of public policy that devastates hard-working citizens and funnels wealth to the wealthiest, leaving destruction to those who can least afford to fight, in the wake. It's time for me to step away from mere computer advocacy and "get out there" to effect change that is meaningful to the trampled, disheartened citizenry.

Why I Deserve a Scholarship to Attend

I am now even more goal oriented and anxious to do what it takes to complete my Master's Degree in Social Work at University of Maryland, Baltimore City Campus, and hopefully follow in the footsteps of Barbara Mikulski, Senator from Maryland, my home state. I am planning to relocate to Maryland to accomplish this goal. This scholarship will remove my burden of acquiring debt I cannot afford, opening the way for me to again build a firm foundation on which to stand and opening the way for my continued work as an advocate for the American People.
