Name: Chuck Tyler
Location: Pittsburgh, PA

My personal volunteering highlight:

Standing in front of a group of 12 concerned citizens, I shared my story. I told them about the divorce of my parents, the death of my grandmother, and the descent into dementia of my grandfather. The group found pieces of themselves in my short narrative, and from there we shared. From sharing, we eventually generated letters to our target public official urging him to do the right thing and support quality, affordable health care for all Americans. I was emotionally drained, and spiritually uplifted after that house meeting, and went on to conduct many more for that particular campaign.

More about my volunteering with DFA:

I have participated in many DFA groups across the country as I worked on issues and candidate campaigns. Whatever is needed, I am there for those groups.

More about my volunteering with progressive organizations:

I am a MoveOn.org volunteer.

More about my work on current campaigns and issues:

I've been a paid staffer on Barack's campaign, Change That Works campaign, and several congressional and gubernatorial campaigns as well.

What motivates me:

I enjoy being a part of something bigger than myself.

How I try to motivate others:

I share my story, and listen to others'.

Where I see myself in five years:

A leader, a mentor and teacher.

Blogging

I run/manage these blogs:
Black Under the Big Sky

Participation in the blogosphere is important because...

Your story is important in establishing shared values with your readers. Your readers, in turn, will share aspects of their lives with you, deepening that connection. Once a connection is there, then explaining what you want done and how they can participate are the logical next steps to mobilize citizens to action.

A Little Bit About Chuck Tyler

I'm just like you; I care enough about politics and the world that I live in to do something about it. I'm just like you; I embrace Gandhi's challenge to be the change you want to see in the world.

Why I Deserve a Scholarship to Attend

I look forward to contributing my knowledge, skills and abilities in a peer setting and learn more about how to mobilize, move targets and contribute to my community in a more positive way thru action. Thank you for this opportunity!
