Karen
| Name: | Karen |
| Location: | New Orleans, LA |
My personal volunteering highlight:
By paying close attention to land use issues I have gained a vocabulary of knowledge that many do not posses. Land use issues while on the surface may not be as "sexy" as other issues is where democracy happens.
What motivates me:
Having my house filled with 5 feet of flood water after Katrina due to the negligence of the federal government.
How I try to motivate others:
Keeping the hyperlocal focus. Pay attention and take notes.
Blogging
Participation in the blogosphere is important because...
Blogs can change the discourse on a local and national level.
A Little Bit About Karen
I am a community activist and blogger in New Orleans Louisiana.
Why I Deserve a Scholarship to Attend
In the time that I have been blogging I have uncovered several City programs that were ill conceived and illegal. These stories were awarded the highest honor this year for the news station that picked them up off my blog.
I attended and received the Peabody Award with the reporter this May, and will be attending the IRE in Baltimore where the story won this years highest award for Investigative Journalism.
