A little about me
Husband of one, father of four, grandfather of two, diehard liberal, broadcaster, writer, activist, orignator and founder of The H.O.R.N., America's Liberal Voice (www.headonradionetwork.com).
Inventor of "conversation radio," an alternative to the ForProfit media model of "talk radio." On the air three hours a night, five nights a week for the last five years talking about liberal politics, society and culture and beating on the right-wing as hard as they've beaten on us for the last twenty years.
The ONLY liberal doing "talk radio" who's a born-and-bred Southerner, able to talk about liberal issues in a way that's open and friendly to southern folk.
Why I deserve a Netroots Nation Scholarship
I can do for NetRoots Nation and the meeting something no one else can: I can deliver the proceedings to the world, commercial free, massively extending and expanding the reach of the conference to liberals all over America and the world.
I manage these blogs
The H.O.R.N.
The blogs I use most are
Think ProgressCrooks and Liars
What first inspired me to get involved
My children. My grandchildren. My heritage. My forebears, who sacrificed and died understanding the next generations would continue where they left off.
Families poisoned by coal companies motivate me. The hills and hollers of Appalachia, reduced to moonscapes, motivate me.
The heroic people who have stood so long and struggled so hard and put all they have on the line for justice in their communities motivate me.
How I've gotten others involved
By virtue of what I already do, I "talk the talk." In order to be effective, however, I also "walk the walk."
I travel frequently to talk to groups about environmental justice issues, to lobby Congress, to attend progressive events.
I work on social and evironmental justice campaigns in my community (see www.coalriverwind.org).
I serve as President of the Board of Directors of Coal River Mountain Watch, a grassroots community organization dedicated to ending mountaintop removal and re-building sustainable communities.
The blog post I am most proud of
http://www.dailyyonder.com/speak-your-piece-making-sacred-zone/2009/05/04/2094
Why I think participation in the blogosphere is important
When done well, participation is the gateway to dialogue. Dialogue is the mother of change and growth. As we read and listen to one another, themes and commonalities emerge whereby we learn that the individual goals we pursue actually are the goals of thousands, perhaps millions among us. Realizing that, we are empowered to move forward and create a better community, state, nation and world.
NB: Since I speak more than I write, I'd refer folks to any of my broadcasts, as opposed to written word pieces. All H.O.R.N. archives are free at http://www.whiterosesociety.org/Kincaid.html
More about my volunteer work
In our efforts to end mountaintop removal, my family and I travelled to Washington, D.C. recently for PowerShift2009. While there, I broadcast the proceedings of the Friday night plenary session to the world. At one point, I got a moment backstage with Van Jones. I told him "You can't green America without first greening Appalachia. Until Appalachia is green, any other attempt will be stained with coal's poison. A green America begins in Appalachia."
My suggested bumper sticker slogan
Would You Trust Wall Street With Your Health? No? Then Stand With Dr. Dean
