Name: mrsjdaniels
Location: Charlotte, NC

My personal volunteering highlight:

The highlight of my volunteer life came the day I found out that I'd helped my job & university community donate over 4 truckload of items to the local shelter.

It was huge! to see the homeless people who stood in the lobby's eyes that day - WOW! They saw all that food, clothing and toys just in time for Christmas and you could see the joy. They new that they were not forgotten and that meant so much to me.

More about my volunteering with DFA:

I currently spend a lot of time on e-activism by blogging (52waystochange.blogspot.com), tweeting @thefriendraiser & @52waystochange and Facebooking in an attempt to stay active while learning more about my new home of Charlotte....people have become reliant on my posts and status updates and I have inspired many friends and family to use their voice to be heard - even when they don't think they have the time or the strength.

I plan to be more involved in DFA now that I have begun to put down roots.

More about my volunteering with progressive organizations:

I am currently a Community Organizer for the Common Good Bank - a bank with a social agenda!

I am a member of Women for Obama and a member of the NC Women's Political Caucus.

I currently volunteer in my community with a few professional groups and used to work full time as a Community Relations Mgr where I help organize food & clothing drives, city wide clean-ups and walks for breast cancer.

The community is my life!

More about my work on current campaigns and issues:

I am currently assisting a close friend in her run for city council in Detroit as her communications director. She wishes to change the trajectory in Detroit and involve the citizens in active government.

I have also joined a local candidate in Charlotte as his communications director as he attempts to focus on bringing the population of Charlotte into transforming it into a community who cares about all citizens.

What motivates me:

Jordan Raquel Daniels. (my daughter) I thought that after the 2008 presidential election I'd be able to sit back and let others lead but since then I have joined the NC Women's Political Caucus, applied for the White House Project's'Go Run' training program for women (just obtained a $50 scholarship for the Georgia 'Go Run' training session in June).

I am motivated because I am a woman and I am raising a woman.

I was inspired to become more active in the political landscape the day I had my daughter. When I looked into her eyes I knew that I had more than just the responsibility to be her mother and inspiration, but that I had a responsibility to make sure that the world that she grows up in respects her views as a women and a minority.

How I try to motivate others:

I motivate others through nagging! hey, it works, I am a mom!

I use my blog, twitter account and Facebook account to post news stories, inspirational quotes and status updates that are thought provoking. I've found my joy in seeing things retweeted and 'liked' and comments come daily about how much I am appreciated.

Where I see myself in five years:

I see myself as a transformational leader in the progressive movement. I intend to continue my education by obtaining a PhD in intercultural communication. I have the strong desire to study how ethics influence communication.

My suggested bumper sticker slogan for the Stand with Dr. Dean campaign:

Pain in your wallet? You need universal health care

Participation in the blogosphere is important because...

I know that discourse is valuable...we must communicate (talking and listening) to bridge the information gaps that we have as Americans.

I teach my students that we will never come together as a country if we stay in our own bubbles and never share...this is my way of sharing.

Why I Deserve a Scholarship to Attend

I am the face of progressive politics...as a registered Independent and African American women; I plan to lead pragmatically.

I deserve a scholarship because I wouldn't be able to attend right now w/out one. I am a part time faculty member at a community college...I only make $1800 per class and teach 9 classes per year...I count pennies and nickels monthly to pay bills but I am still hopeful about tomorrow and work daily to change it.
