Western Maryland Democratic Summit Set

The Fourth Annual Western Maryland Democratic Summit will be held April 11 and 12 at Rocky Gap Lodge & Golf Resort near Cumberland. The summit features informative political workshops, numerous opportunities for networking and addresses from top elected officials.

Congressman Chris Van Hollen will be the keynote speaker for Saturday’s dinner, to be introduced by Allegany County Commissioner Jim Stakem. Governor Martin O’Malley and Senator Barbara Mikulski will speak during lunch.  Author Thomas F. Schaller will offer insight on the subject of winning back the White House. He will also be available to autograph copies of his book Whistling Past Dixie - How Democrats Can Win Without The South.

The afternoon program consists of two panel discussions on state and national issues ranging from slots to health care to national security. Featured panelists include Attorney General Doug Gansler, Comptroller Peter Franchot, Delegate Galen Clagett, Delegate Sue Hecht, Delegate Kevin Kelly, Allegany County Sheriff David Goad and Sixth District Congressional Candidate Jennifer Dougherty. The summit was created in 2005 as a way for Democrats in Allegany, Carroll, Frederick, Garrett and Washington counties to organize, strategize, and make the party more competitive in the 6th Congressional District. The event draws hundreds of activists annually.

All Maryland Democrats are invited to attend. The cost is $85.00 per person and includes a continental breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday as well as admission to all events.  Students may attend at a reduced rate of $20.00 and should contact Brian Grim at BrianGrim@gmail.com prior to registering.

Registration is already underway and the event is expected to sell out early. For more information please contact Bill DuVall at 301-722-2141.

My previous post was hijacked somehow.  I really believe in doing all that I can to help Brian and that's why I'm posting this request again.

I want to do more to support Cumberland, Maryland.  I believe we must do more to keep young people in Cumberland and part of that solution is to elect leaders who will for toward the challenges that young people face in our community.  We should have leaders that are interested in making Cumberland better and that support the young people.  We need to elect a good, young leader.  That's why I totally support Brian Grim for City Council!

I want to see leaders with positive ideas in Cumberland, MD.  Brian Grim is a candidate for Cumberland City Council and we need to support him by organizing fundraisers and encouraging people to vote for him.  I think Brian would be a wonderful leader.

His campaign website is listed on his DFA page, but here it is again:  www.ElectBrianGrim.com

I have set a personal goal of $2,000.00 to fundraise for Brian's campaign and I'm trying to get the word out by encouraging DFA Link members to donate today!  Please help me meet that goal by donating today and including a note that you were encouraged to support Brian from DFA Link.

This is a chance to elect a young Democrat in a part of Maryland that is usually considered to be Republican territory.

Happy Labor Day Events ... (PLEASE DISTRIBUTE WIDELY!)

Happy Labor Day Weekend! Do you know which political party is responsible for this tribute to the worker and late summer vacation? Government is better when DEMOCRATS take charge. It is vital we send a message to the failed leadership in Washington, D.C.; Annapolis, and our local county seats a change is coming - "staying the course" is NOT a path to victory, energy independence is a national emergency priority, and all of us are entitled to affordable, quality healthcare.

The rally will take place at the edge of Broening Park/Middle Branch Park (2875 South Hanover Drive, Baltimore, Maryland 21225) - just north of Harbor Hospital Center and just southwest of the gargantuan WAL*MART/Sam's Club complex at Port Covington and southeast of the Hanover Street bridge. The Maryland Viet Nam Veteran's Memorial Monument is in the park where we hold a permit. If you could R.S.V.P., that would be GREAT. www.dfalink.com/event.php?id=108... If you can't R.S.V.P. or don't want to, just COME!

The political rally on corporate responsibility and accountability will showcase several candidates for office this Autumn. Candidates for U.S. Senate, former Congressperson Kweisi Mfume, Congressman Ben Cardin, and Dr. Allan Lichtman; Jim DEAN, Chairman, DEMOCRACY for America; Terry Lierman, Chairman, Maryland DEMOCRATIC Party; and Duchy Trachtenberg, President, Maryland N.O.W., are all scheduled to speak. The rally will focus on Governor Ehrlich's very close relationship with WAL*MART executives -- how they have contributed to Ehrlich's re-election campaign -- and how their combined corruption and negligence have hurt Maryland's hard-working, middle-class families. We will not be requesting he demand a "pull out now" strategy or continue to "stay the course" in deference to the current leadership. We want to request he encourage full debate on the issue which has not been adequately addressed in the 3ฝ years of the war. Sign up here: www.dfalink.com/event.php?id=109...

If you can help us in late September in the Congressman's District office, can you get back in touch with me? My contact details are as noted below.

Jay Kei.

Hill Democrats Unite to Urge Bush to Begin Iraq Pullout - WashingtonPost.com, by Charles Babington and Jim VandeHei

DEMOCRACY for America in Frederick meeting is this evening, Tuesday, 18.July, at 7:30 p.m., at Frederick Coffee Company at Everedy Square/Shab Row. Our candidates, Captain Andrew Duck for Congress in Maryland's Sixth District, and Kai Hagen for Frederick County Commissioner, will be in attendance. We have invited Sue Hecht, candidate for House of Delegates, though we have not received her confirmation. Tentatively, former Congressperson, Kweisi Mfume, will be coming to our meeting in August. Frederick County in 2006 ... the NEW BLUE!!!

DEMOCRACY for Baltimore steering committee meeting will be tomorrow evening, Wednesday, 19.July, at Barnes and Noble Towson Circle, at 1 East Joppa Road in Towson. Our meeting will commence at 6:30 p.m. We will plan for our meeting agenda for our Baltimore city meeting on 2.August. Everyone is invited to attend and bring your comments/concerns.

At 7:00 p.m., Tracy Miller will be speaking at the North Baltimore DEMOCRACY for America meeting. After Tracy's son was killed in Fallujah in November 2004, she decided to dedicate her life to the things that were important to him: the environment, healthcare, education, and liberty; Tracy is seeking a House of Delegates seat in September's primary. For those that have not met this lady, come out to hear her speak. This legislative district, "The 42nd" is tough neighboring Baltimore's northern corridor, Towson. Tracy, a professor at Towson University, has a solid campaign and is WOW!ing her potential constituents at her every chance.

(For anyone interested in walking for other candidates for elected office, reply to this mail, and I can refer you to several such people who could use your commitment.)

The Martin O'Malley/Anthony Brown gubernatorial campaign, Leadership That Works, is looking for places around the State to place their exciting lime green signs. If you know of a spot where the campaign can mark the territory for DEMOCRATS or if you would like to put one in your yard or your window (or you want a bumper sticker), get in touch with Ashley Valis at the Baltimore campaign headquarters. Her address is: AValis@MartinOMalley.com; her telephone number is: (410) 814-4206.

Come join the fun at the Prince George's Stadium, home of the Bowie BaySox, as the Prince George's County Young Democrats and the Anne Arundel County Young Democrats co-host a Blue Barbeque, Saturday, 22.July, at 6:00 p.m.

The event will feature an all-you-can-eat buffet and a host of prominent DEMOCRATS from Central Maryland dedicated to victory in November!

For more information, please contact Omar Boulware, (240) 461-5895, of Prince Georges County Young DEMOCRATS

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union and DEMOCRACY for America present a Baltimore stop on the "Change WAL*MART, Change America" tour on 3.August. The rally will take place at the boat dock of Broening Park/Middle Branch Park - just north of Harbor Hospital Center and just south of the gargantuan WAL*MART/Sam's Club complex at Port Covington and the Hanover Street bridge.

The political rally on corporate accountability and responsibility will showcase several candidates for office this Autumn. Former Congressperson Kweisi Mfume, candidate for U.S. Senate, has already accepted an invitation. Jim DEAN, Chairman, DEMOCRACY for America, will speak. Our rally will focus on Governor Ehrlich's close relationship with WAL*MART and his failures which have hurt Maryland's hard-working, middle-class families.

The DEMOCRACY for Baltimore YAHOO! Group has been reorganized. It will be more on topic, less contentious, and will be moderated for a while. Please come back and participate in friendly discussions. You can join by sending a mail to: DEMOCRACYforBaltimore-Subscribe@YAHOOGroups.com or by clicking here: Groups.YAHOO.com/group/DEMOCRACY... and following the sign in procedures.

Strategy Meeting for Rev. Jim Wallis

The Maryland DEMOCRATIC Party has invited Rev. Jim Wallis, author of "God's politics - why the right gets it wrong and the left doesn't get it", to College Park on 27.July to speak with local activists, candidates, and the clergy.

If you are tired of having the religious right redefine "family values" by focusing on a few divisive issues, afraid they will use these tactics in the upcoming election, and want to fight back; plan to attend this event. If you are ready to take a more active part in turning this country around, please consider attending an action meeting volunteering to help with planning and logistics for the event.
