Notes - How to stand out outline

Written by: Sahar Massachi on Jul 18, 2008 3:09 PM EDT

Linked to groups: Brandeis University, DFA at Netroots Nation (formerly YearlyKos) July 17-20

(Crossposted at InnermostParts.org)

John Hlinko (of Grassroots Enterprise) teach. I type. You read.

Lessons -
1: Measure, don’t assume

2: Give people what they want

3: Find the multipliers
Find the influential people who can spread to their friends.

What content inspires multipliers?
topical. in the news
emotionally impactful (humor, anger, etc)
cognitive dissonance
Dash of Beavis and Butthead
117 emails - if inbox has 117 emails, and yours is 118, will they read it?
Ignore the “joy sponges” - people who suck the joy out of life

Joy sponges aren’t offended, but think others will be.

4: Get Creative
use a villian
focus on multipliers in specific community

Find creative / funny friends and bounce ideas off each other.
There’s nothing stopping you from using lots of micro-sites and targeting each to a specific audience.

...and a joy spreader :-)

Sahir, you rock for posting from each session.  Thankful to ya, big time.

I would add:  take this advice to heart but not in the sense of being just another ranting and raving diatribe.  Give substance, facts, and hook the reader into thinking/responding.

I'm a bit confused however - what's a Howardly?

In any case, sorry about the format - I typed this from my tiny laptop so writing was slow, and I made an executive decision to value speed (of posting) and brevity over comprehensive lateness.

By floridagal . on Jul 19, 2008 3:20 PM EDT

Schumer, Harold Ford, and Cass Sunstein, Obama advisor....urge the party not to pursue Bush's behavior during these 8 years.  Don Siegelman disagrees.

Top Dems say keep harmony, protect Bush. Don Siegelman says "give me a break."

"Give me a break," responded former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman, when told about Sunstein's advice during an interview with The Nation. Siegelman took a court-sanctioned trip to tell attendees about his conviction for corruption, currently on appeal, which he says was motivated by a malicious Republican effort to destroy his career."

Look for their TCO certification when you buy stuff like electronics.

They call the environment miljö (mil-yur) which also meand milieu, apparently from the same root. I like that.

By Annilow on Jul 19, 2008 4:20 PM EDT

...I got a nice surprise in the mail today. It was a letter from my college's alumni org and I opened it expecting the usual request for money. As it turns out, my best bud from h.s. contacted my college in an attempt to find me and they forwarded her info. Isn't that nice? I sent her an email and a pix :~) I took w/ my Mac and await an answer. We graduated in are you ready 1960 lol. I think of her often b/c Seashell reminds me of her a great deal - personality wise I mean.

I got three requests for $100 yesterday. Jim Dean, Barack Obama, and my college letterman's club.

One included a round of golf followed by a steak.

it is painful being a political junkie

is why this pioneer of the net and a sponsor of netroots can't make these links for us rather than have us create them bottom up?

If they'd just make every entry a 'reply' we'd always have a toolbar.  I like the toolbar, when I get one.  And I'm amazed that I can copy and paste pictures - who knew it was so EZ.

- Susan: "n/t" in a header means there's "no text" in the body

By puddle on Jul 19, 2008 4:35 PM EDT

Saves peeps who read unexpanded from opening that comment to look for more.  Works better at kos, where lots just skim, than here, where pretty much everyone reads expanded. . . .

- At this point I could careless about what the corporate media is spouting off about.

By Susan Rowe on Jul 19, 2008 5:27 PM EDT

They are only there to sell their corporate sponsors' products and to 'capture' our focus 24/7.

There is no such thing a clean coal technology.  And the only real Healthcare for All system is a Universal single-payer.  Universal single-payer is the only real quality and affordable system that will cover every American.

- The people of California can make laws by using ballot initiatives...

By Susan Rowe on Jul 19, 2008 5:49 PM EDT

We NOW have lawmakers (and a goobernator) who use ballot initiatives to make new laws rather than doing the job that they were elected to do.

- Still gratefull for the running commentary

By Monica Smith on Jul 19, 2008 5:21 PM EDT

Peopel speak much quicker than anyone can write.  That's why court reporters have a particular short-hand and have not been replaced.

Just try and transcribe a recorded statement.  Justice Anthony Kennedy's speech to the ABA is a good example.  It probably only took about 20 minutes for him to deliver.  It took me hours to transcribe and, probably because he didn't have a prepared written text, the ABA only provided a summary.

To me, it's still one of the most revelatory statements about the rule of law and the Constitution.  And many of the rulings on the detainees have been entirely consistent.  Kennedy is a true democrat, as opposed to an autocrat.
