Petition- Message To Pres Obama
Linked to groups: Blog For America, Kingston Democracy for America
I just received a dissapointing message from BoldProgressives.org, a group I belong to asking me to sign a petition to Pres Obama insisting he stand firm on the Public Option. It appears the President may be considering dropping the Public Option from the final Bill in next weeks address to Congress. It also encourages its members to include a message to Pres Obama.
So today, we're launching a petition to President Obama signed by those who volunteered, staffed, voted for, or donated to Obama's campaign in 2008, asking him to please stand firm on the public option.
I'm having trouble getting the "sign the petition" link to work here, but if you go to BoldProgressives.org, it's there. I strongly urge all here concerned about this to go to BoldProgressives.org and sign the petition to Pres Obama. Leave a comment too, if you so desire.
You may not agree with me here, but below is MY message to the President.
To Pres Obama,
I too worked hard, supported, and voted for you and "Change We Can Believe In" 72 percent of ALL Americans still support the public option. To be intimidated by an extremist minority, and demonstrate the same spinelessness that characterizes the Dem party of today is not "Change We Can Believe In", but rather more of the same. The Senate Dems (Blue Dogs) who once again seem willing to do what they've done best over the past 8 yr. (tuck their tails between their legs, and fold) should be ashamed of their cowardice in standing up to the Private Insurance Industry and their big money.
The Senate "Blue Dog Dems" are ignoring their constituents who supported and voted for them. Their own district Dem voters still support the PO too. The Blue Dog Dems come from areas of America that represent only 1-2 percent of the total constituents of the Dem party. But, they wll make the entire Dem party nation wide, pay a big price in 2010 and 2012 if they don't support the Public Option.
Please show some leadership and courage Pres Obama. Get the Blue Dog Dems on board. If the final bill does not contain the Public Option, it will do little or nothing to lower premiums, and little or nothing for the 47 million uninsured. The Private Insurance Industry again wins, and "We The People" again lose. No change here. Despite a Dem Pres, a 60-40 Fillibuster proof majority in the Senate, and an even bigger majority in the House?
I would rather see the Dems WITH some courage in the House kill the Bill, than surrender the good fight and accept a watered down worthless compromise. The Progressive wing of the Dem party (who did the hard work and raised the money that got you and other Dem candidates elected in 2006 and 2008) will get very busy and put those traitor "Blue Dog Dems" in the cross hairs, and support candidates in their districts to challenge them in their Primary, who will not cave in to (be bought off by) the Private Insurance Industry for their re election bids in 2010 and 2012. We then can come back with a new Congress after 2010, with Dem candidates who demonstrate a spine, and get this done right.
If the final Bill does not insist on the PO, I will not be voting for you again in 2012, Pres Obama. Nor will I continue to support the Dem party and vote for the Dem candidates locally and State Wide. Why should I continue to vote for the Dems when they don't have the courage to accomplish their agenda? You HAVE the votes now! It only requires 51 votes, not 60, to get it done! Get the spineless Blue Dog Dems to use the majority you all were elected with. If not, it will be the DEMS who somehow manage to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Ignore your constituents at your, and the Dem party's, own peril in 2010 and 2012.
Regretfully,

Prosecute Bu$hCo, Cheney, And The Republican Enablers
For some time now, people have been wondering how the historical Presidential legacy of George W. Bush will read. That it will be terrible, is now almost universal in consensus. I'm now thinking how the legacy of the most authoritarian, abusive of power, secretive, Vice President in U.S. history should read also. I will never understand how so many questionable actions of Bush/Cheney went unchallenged for so long. I will never understand how the legality of so many of their actions weren't challenged by Congress, or in the courts, much sooner.
During the run up to the Iraq invasion, our nation and our news people must have been asleep or under the spell of post 9-11 induced opportunistic Patriotism. VP Cheney and his office were perhaps the biggest offenders in the cherry picking and manipulation of pre war intelligence, the exaggerated claims of dire threats, and the main authors of why Iraq posed such an imminent threat to the U.S. that a preemptive invasion was necessary for our National Security.
The sixteen words of yellow cake uranium from Niger, the bogus threat of the consequences coming back to us in the form of a mushroom cloud, and other phony exaggerated threats, were for the most part drafted by the VP and his office. In the end Bush/Cheney sold it to Congress and the American people and got their permission slip for the unnecessary invasion. Which brought nothing but death and destruction to a nation and people who had nothing to do with 9-11, and who never posed any real threat to the U.S.

The Lion of the Senate is so appropriate a Title for this man. Sen Ted Kennedy introduced and helped pass some of the most important Legislation of our time. His proposed Bills were always aimed at lifting the lives of children, the poor, downtrodden, disabled.... He never abandoned his core principles and I admire that. A true Democrat.
I only wish he had lived long enough to see real Health Care Reform become a reality. There would have been no better a departing gift to the man who devoted so many years of his life fighting for that cause in his long tenure in the Senate. Now it's up to us to continue fighting the good fight.
R.I.P. Sen Kennedy
You will be sorely missed forever.

Obama Health Care Plan.......Cut And Run?
Linked to groups: Kingston Democracy for America, Blog For America
Obama Health Care Plan......Cut And Run?
The American people spoke loudly in Nov. 2008 and elected the Democratic candidate Barack Obama to be the 44th President of the United States of America. The Sen from Illinois was the first ever African American to be elected President. As a result of that election, the American people also gave the Democratic party a 60-40 fillibuster proof majority in the Senate, and an even bigger majority in the House Of Representatives, along with a Democrat President.
Near the top of Obama's list of campaign promises was the important issue of reforming the broken Health Care system. Health Care Reform has been considered a top Democratic party issue for about 40+ years. With a new Democrat President, and the big majorities in both the House and Senate, the time seems right for real Health Care Reform to finally become a reality. With a Democrat President and these huge Congressional majorities, the way a real Democracy is supposed to work should make getting this accomplished an almost certainty. So why is the attempt to get this done going so poorly?
We are now witnessing how lobbyists and big Corporate money have corrupted Washington. How a handful of Senators who receive big money from the Private Insurance Industry, HMO's, Big Pharma.... can over rule the Democratic process in America. The election, the Democratic Congressional majorities and Democrat President, along with the will of the American people, is being ignored. This is NOT how a real Democracy is supposed to function.
83 percent of all Americans support Health Care Reform. Over 50 percent of registered Republicans also support some kind of reform. 72 percent of all Americans support a public option, which will provide a little competition to the current system which is entirely run by Private Insurance Companies for profit. The public option will not be profit driven, thus giving the Private Insurance Industry competition to keep the out of control costs from continuing to rise. Under the current Private "for profit" system Health Care costs and premiums have become too expensive and many Americans just can't afford it. The number of uninsured has risen over the years to about 46 million now.
Now we are seeing attempts to water down the final Bill to the point of excluding the public option, which is exactly what the Private Insurance Industry wants. Without the public option the final Bill will be worthless. There will be no competition or incentive for Private Insurers to keep costs down, and it will do little or nothing for the 46 million uninsured. All in the name of a "bi partisan" compromise." A phony bi partisan compromise, because nothing is bi partisan in Washington these days. President Obama and the Democrats should reject this worthless compromise.
Pres Obama, please do not "Cut and Run" and accept this unacceptable phony compromise if it unfortunately comes to this. Please do not abandon your supporters. We are not giving up this fight. Please do not be the General who deserts his troops leaving them on the battlefield to fend for themselves. We will not surrender to the will of the Private Insurance Industry, and neither should you. If the "Blue Dog" Democrats of your own party cave in to the will of the American people and results of the 08 election because they were bought off by Private Insurance, it will be remembered come their next re election attempts. Don't let yourself and real Health Care Reform go down with them. Don't accept the unacceptable compromise and try to claim it's a victory, because we know better, and it's not a victory
Rather than accept a worthless compromise, I and many of your supporters would rather see the Bill killed. It would be better to come back and try again after the 2010 elections with a new Congress, than accept a worthless compromise. Then we can put the "Blue Dog" traitors in the cross hairs and hopefully replace them with Primary challenges by candidates who will NOT surrender to (be bought off by) the Private Insurance Industry. I'd personally prefer this over accepting a watered down compromise that does nothing, if it regretfully has to come to that.

Health Care Reform And The Religious Right

Health Care Reform And The Religious Right
I suppose I shouldn't really be surprised, but still I am. Some of the so called leaders of the Religious Community have begun speaking out on Pres Obama's Health Care Reform plan, and I find what many are saying to be amazing and surprising. Apparently, according to many of them, Jesus himself would not support the Obama Health Care Reform plan. Really? We are talking about the same Jesus Christ that the Bible repeatedly shows examples of his deep concern and compassion for the poor, downtrodden, sick, disabled....? Jesus would not support a plan that would provide Health Care services for nearly 50 million people who currently are uninsured and lack Health Care? Jesus himself would prefer that these nearly 50 million people not receiving Health Care stay uninsured and untreated?( which is the end result if the Obama plan fails to pass) What a crock!
In the days of Jesus there was also a group of so called Religious leaders who claimed their beliefs and views were the Word Of God. They were known as the money changers. The great majority of the public faithful believed that the money changers did indeed represent the Word Of God. Until the day Jesus himself stormed into the Temple and proclaimed "You have turned my Father's House into a den of thieves" overturned their tables, and threw them out of the Temple. Apparently Jesus himself didn't believe they represented the word of his Father, and today we know they didn't. They were frauds, mostly concerned about their own personal fortunes.
These so called Religious leaders of today ( Dobson, Robertson....) remind me very much of the money changers in Jesus day. They run multi million dollar Religious Corporations, tax exempt of course. They live in multi million dollar mansions paid for by what their poor and working class flock members put on the plate on Sundays. These religious leaders of today are no less of a fraud than the money changers were in Jesus day!
It's time for the real Christians of today to stop blindly believing everything being said by these Charlatans. Do some soul searching and ask yourself, do these so called Religious leaders of today really represent the Word Of God and the true teachings of Jesus? Or are they too really more concerned with their own personal fortunes. Because just like the money changers, many of these phony Christian leaders of today are really big businessmen, not real men of the cloth, ARE more concerned about their own wealth, and do NOT represent the true word of God or the true teachings of Jesus. The real Jesus would definately support Health Care for all. It says this repeatedly in the Bible.

PROTEST CRACKDOWN IN IRAN
Linked to groups: Blog For America, Kingston Democracy for America
DEFIANCE IN IRAN
The people of the entire world, including the Muslim world, are shocked and appalled by the horrors they see being inflicted on the citizens of Iran. The whole world stands with them and admires their bravery, courage, and determination, to stand up to the repressive regime that has lied to its own people. The world has seen that their demonstrations in solidarity were peaceful and non violent from the start.
But the repressive regime has chosen to inflict violence and bloodshed on it's own citizens in an attempt to silence and intimidate them. And why? Because the Iranian people just want what they were promised. For their vote to be counted in a fair election. The entire world has also seen what a fraud this so called free election was. The world has also observed that the Iranian citizens had no intention of trying to over throw the regime, and were demonstrating peacefully. They just want what they were promised by the Iranian Government itself, their vote being counted in a fair election.
The crackdown, which the Government hopes will restore order, seems to be producing a different result. Instead of backing down and going home, the protestors seem more determined, and sometimes even challenging. The Government may have misread the situation from early on.They may now view this all as a bigger threat to their retaining power than previously thought.
The violence and brutality is being carried out by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and Bastiji militia. Would both these forces be in fear of reprisal if they didn't follow these orders? Or are they firmly committed to the defense of the Regime? They can learn a lesson from their own brave and courageous citizens. They should stand with the people and demonstrate their own bravery and courage, and refuse these orders.
Despite the Iranian Governments attempt of a total news blackout, the world is viewing home invasions of Iranian citizens by the Revolutionary Guard and Government authorities. Thanks to the Internet, and Twitter in particular, the true story is getting out. Complete news blackouts are near impossible now in this age of camera cell phones and the Internet. We are seeing women, children, the elderly, being terrorized in their own homes by the agents who do the Governments dirty work.
It is truly shocking. The entire world is now also witness to what the repressive Iranian Government is inflicting on its own people. All because they demand what they were promised. That their vote be counted in a fair election, and no more. The Iranian Government looks very bad here. This is surprising to most of the world ,who had no idea how oppressive the Iranian Government could be in their attempt to silence and intimidate their own people.
The citizens of Iran who have been killed in the past two weeks are now martyrs to their cause in the Islamic world. Enough praise and admiration can not be said to those injured or persecuted for their perseverance and bravery in the face of danger to their own personal safety. They continue to stand up for what they believe is just and right. Truly admirable. Most of the world, including the Muslim world, is on their side. Shame on the Iranian Government and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard for the choice they have made.

Stop Further War Funding
Linked to groups: Blog For America, Kingston Democracy for America
Supplemental Appropriations Act Of 2009
It appears to be that time again. Time to waste a couple hundred billion more dollars on two wars that have accomplished little. Again, a real comprehensive review of the strategy, expectations, cost, and truthful analysis of what has or hasn't been achieved, is unlikely. In the 2006 mid term elections the Democrats were elected to majorities in both the House and Senate. The most important issue by far was the Iraq war. Americans spoke out at the polls with a clear mandate to the Democrats to bring the disaster in Iraq to a close. That was 31 months ago. Since then, most Democrats, along with nearly all Republicans, have continued to fund both wars in Afghanistan and Iraq numerous times. To the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars each time.
Since the election of 2006, the Democrats have shown a real lack of leadership in stopping further funding of these wars. They have let their constituents down. They've demonstrated a rubber spine on standing up to unpopular Bush policies. The continued war funding, FISA compromise, failure to launch investigations... are just a few examples of their caving in. We heard the excuses "we don't have the votes", we don't control the White House.... A Democrat has now been elected to the White House. The Democrats now have a huge majority in the House, and a 60-40 filibuster proof majority in the Senate. (Whenever Sen Franken finally gets to Washington anyhow) There is no longer any excuse to ignore the voters mandate. If you want to be in power, then you must lead. There are way too few real leaders in Washington these days with the courage to actually lead. The current cycle of never ending campaigning and elections have produced many poll watching followers, but few real leaders.
Today we are trying to lift our economy from the worst financial recession since the Great Depression. Unprecedented amounts of taxpayer dollars (trillions) have been given to greedy, corrupt, already ultra rich Wall Street bankers to bail them out of the gigantic financial mess they themselves created with their own insatiable greed and mismanagement. At the same time unemployment figures are nearing double digits nationwide. Almost 50 million Americans continue to lack health coverage. After eight years conducting two endless wars our nations roads, bridges, electric grid, and infrastructure in general, have been ignored and are now crumbling.
America is in serious decline. We need the few real leaders in Washington to question the rationale of wasting hundreds of billions more dollars on these endless, unproductive wars. They have done more harm than good concerning making us safer. It's time for a return to fiscal sanity. It's time to end the downward spiral in America. It's time to end these two wars. It's time for Healthcare Not Warfare. It's time for real change.

What Does It Take
Linked to groups: Blog For America, Kingston Democracy for America
What does it take for our House and Senate members, or our new Attorney General and DOJ, to finally launch a real investigation into the CIA enhanced interrogation techniques and DOJ torture memos? I've given up on our spineless Congress long ago, although they're supposed to be "We The People's" first and strongest check and balance against Government wrong doings. To say the revelations of recent weeks are shocking is an incredible under statement. To say the revelations are torture, War Crimes, and should be investigated and possibly prosecuted, should now be mandatory for all Washington officials regardless of political party affiliation. There seems to no longer be any debate that water boarding is and always was, torture, illegal, and a War Crime. No debate that certain detainees were indeed water boarded, with one of them water boarded up to 183 times in a one month period, and the other over 100 times in one month.
According to statements made by the interrogators themselves, the water boarding of detainees was more concerned with coerced confessions from detainees that would provide links between Saddam Hussein and Iraq, with Al Qaeda and the 9-11-01 attacks, than it was with preventing future attacks here in America. To justify the exaggerated threats that were the basis of the unnecessary invasion of Iraq. This violates even the ridiculous DOJ memo guidelines that attempted to justify the torture!
Recently the Obama administration refused to release to the public video tapes of the interrogations. Refused to release them on the grounds that it would be bad for the U.S. image world wide, bad for the safety of our troops, and very beneficial for Al Qaeda recruitment purposes. (What happened to transparency from the new Obama administration?) There may also be other reasons Obama, the CIA, and the new DOJ have for not wanting these tapes released. There are now allegations that these tapes may also show brutal beatings, and even rapes, of both male and female Iraqi detainees at Abu Gharib! I say allegations, because without transparency we have no way of knowing the truth. Were beatings and rapes authorized by the White House too? Would that too not be worthy of investigating? As a nation, we need to know the truth here.
I've watched with amazement how many Republican members of the House and Senate have defended the torture of detainees in recent weeks. I want to know if these allegations of beatings and rapes prove to be true, will Republicans also defend this? Where is the line where they are taking loyalty to the party way too far? Violations of our Constitution, Geneva Conventions, and even violations of our own U.S. Military Code Of Justice, which clearly states water boarding as torture, illegal, and a War Crime, seem to have crossed that line long ago.
It's way past time for an investigation into all this. It's time for the Obama administration to stop being afraid of dealing with this. Let partisan Republicans defend torture, beatings, rapes....if they are dumb enough and immoral enough to continue to. I know Pres Obama is trying to get bi-partisan support for his programs and proposed legislation, but that's no excuse for turning a blind eye to the rule of law and the continuation of the Obstruction Of Justice and attempted cover up here.
Besides, Obama's attempt at bi partisanship has produced nothing from Republicans. He's gotten his hand slapped or bitten every time he's extended the olive branch to them. Obama is displaying inexperience and a sense of naivete in understanding the partisan ways of Washington. He may also be demonstrating an exaggerated sense of self importance if he truly believes he's going to be the one who erases 30 plus years of the partisan poison and how Washington operates.
If you want to be our nations leader, then you must lead. Sometimes the right decision isn't easy. But a true leader doesn't compromise his principles, and makes the correct decision to do the right thing. It's time for you to do just that Mr. President. This is not going away, and the entire world is watching and waiting to see what you will do about all this.

Re Think Afghanistan
Linked to groups: Kingston Democracy for America, Blog For America
Linked to campaigns: Obama for America
President Obama and Secretary Of Defense Gates need to re think the entire strategy in Afghanistan. We have completed seven years in Afghanistan and are now in year eight. We need to re evaluate the objective of the mission, mission strategy, chances of success of that strategy…. I was amazed when top Military commanders in Afghanistan were recently asked “What’s The End Game Here?” Their answer was “We Don’t Have An End Game strategy.” Year eight, with NO end game strategy?
Considering Afghanistan is twice the size of Iraq, with much of its terrain rugged and mountainous, does anybody really think 17,000 more combat troops is going to make a difference? It wont. But then we’ll further escalate troop levels. Ignoring the lesson of the old USSR and its disastrous occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980's. Ignoring the lesson of Viet Nam where troop escalation resulted in more death and injury to our soldiers, but made no difference in the outcome.
On Sept 11, 2001 the U.S. was attacked by the radical Islamic terrorist group Al Qaeda. Al Qaeda had a safe haven in Afghanistan for recruiting, training, and generally growing and spreading their radical ideology. The U.S. retaliated in late 2001 and thought they had mostly destroyed Al Qaeda and their supporting ally the Taliban Regime, which ruled Afghanistan at that time. They hadn't. Then somehow the U.S. took its eye off the ball, began withdrawing troops and re deploying them to another recently started War front, Iraq.
We scaled back our troop numbers in Afghanistan and compromised the mission of defeating those who attacked us on 9-11-01, for a new mission in Iraq. A nation who had nothing to do with 9-11-01 and who never posed any real threat to the U.S. The U.S. destroyed Iraq, killing hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians, and over four thousand of our own soldiers. Totally unnecessary. All the while allowing Al Qaeda and the Taliban to re group, recruit, and grow back to a force that at this present time represents just as big a threat to U.S. security as it did prior to 9-11-01.
At the same time Afghan poppy production flourished. The size of Afghanistan's poppy crop has quadrupled from 2002-2009. The enormous money generated by the illegal poppy-heroin trade will now keep Al Qaeda and the Taliban supplied with arms for a long time to come. What is the plan for dealing with this? Remember the geography factor, the mountainous terrain and sheer total size of Afghanistan. We don't want troop escalations that only serve to get more of our troops killed and injured along with the Afghan civilian population. We don't want to raise the stakes with a strategy that has unrealistic expectations.
Yes, Pres Obama and Sec Of Defense Gates need to re think a lot of things. Afghanistan has all the makings of becoming Obama’s Viet Nam like quagmire. But there’s still time to avert an even bigger disaster. Troop escalation may well prove to not be the answer for success in Afghanistan.

Dear President Obama And Attorney General Holder
"We The People" of the United States Of America urge Attorney General Eric Holder to appoint a non-partisan independent Special Counsel to immediately commence a prosecutorial investigation into the most serious alleged crimes of former President George W. Bush, former Vice President Richard B. Cheney, the attorneys formerly employed by the Department of Justice whose memos sought to justify torture, and other former top officials of the Bush Administration.
Our laws, and treaties that under Article VI of our Constitution are the supreme law of the land, require the prosecution of crimes that strong evidence suggests these individuals have committed. Both the former president and the former vice president have confessed to authorizing a torture procedure that is illegal under our law and treaty obligations. The former president has confessed to violating the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.
We see no need for these prosecutions to be extraordinarily lengthy or costly, and no need to wait for the recommendations of a panel or "truth" commission when substantial evidence of the crimes is already in the public domain. We believe the most effective investigation can be conducted by a prosecutor, and we believe such an investigation should begin immediately.
For eight years the Bush administration has engaged in stalling and stone walling any attempt at any form of investigation of their crimes. Their tactics included very questionable signing statements, ignoring Congressional subpoenas to testify, citing Executive Privilege claims in an attempt to cover up their own law breaking.... For eight years there has been an Obstruction Of Justice and a cover up in getting at the truth. The Obama administration and our nations new Attorney General Eric Holder can either take the necessary steps to finally get at the truth that the American people have been entitled to all along, or it can join in the continued Obstruction Of Justice and cover up by continuing in the turning away from the Bush administration and its crimes and law breaking.
Why President Obama would want the stain of the Bush legacy to become a stain on his own legacy, is beyond me. The Obama legacy began being written on Jan.20, 2009. If team Obama decides to join in the cover up, history will record them as more part of the problem, than solution. I urge President Obama and AG Holder to do the right and necessary thing and proceed with REAL investigations and prosecutions if crimes and law breaking have been committed. This is not a left-right thing. This is clearly a right-wrong thing. These possible crimes are very serious. It's time for REAL Change. A continued cover up is NOT "Change We Can Believe In", but rather more of the same.
