Regarding opening environmentally protected areas for mining and pumping oil:

There is over 200 years of oil in the 48 contiguous States that are capped up by oil companies to monopolize world energy. There is no need to violate our environmentally protected areas, just to allow oil companies to further monopolize their strangle hold over our lives.

They are creating a media frenzy just to increase the price of oil; very successfully I might add. However, there is no immediate threat for an oil shortage !!! The oil companies have ONLY created the perception that there is a shortage !!!!

I personally believe that ALL mineral rights belong to the American People, NOT souless corporations!!!

I applaud Venezuela for nationalizing the oil assets in their country!!!!

We should be doing the same thing here in the United States !!!!

Ethically Eliminate ALL Political Corruption

Help our neighbors in the Maryland 4th Congressional

Linked to groups: Arlington/Alexandria Democracy for America

With the endorsement of Democracy for America, community activist Donna Edwards is taking on incumbent Al Wynn in the Maryland's Democratic Primary this February 12th.

This is a nationally significant test of whether grassroots power can take on a pro-war, weak-on-the environment, corporate Democrat.  The district is overwhelmingly democratic and needs a real democrat to stand up for the citizens.  And Donna came very close to beating Wynn in 2006.

I'm a DFA member who attended the DFA Training this past summer in Fairfax.  And I am volunteering with the Donna Edwards campaign.  The campaign could use some of the volunteer talent that helped turn the VA Governor's Mansion and statehouse blue.

Until the Feb 12th primary, the campaign needs some individuals who have experience with phone banks to help with their phone program, who wouldn't be afraid to drive 15 minutes to help elect a true progressive to Congress.  Help is needed as soon as possible.  Please call Mike Hamby @573-529-1054 or email him at mike@donnaedwardsforcongress.com.

You can also speak with Gina at the Montgomery County office at 301-871-5302

April is Green, Celebrate Spring with DFA

Join your DFA friends for ice cream and a movie at Stacy's on Thursday!

DFA Green Meetings will feature the advocacy documentary Kilowatt Ours. The film demonstrates the connections an average homeowner's energy use has on mountain top removal, coal mining, global warming, and nuclear power. A key aspect of the film is that it demonstrates actions that apartment renters, homeowners, schools, and governments can do to save energy and reduce demand for unsustainable energy.

You will walk away from this film inspired to reduce your own greenhouse gases. The film is fun, thought provoking, and filled with great ideas on how to make a difference. Your group might even be inspired to take action in the community

Aug 10 meeting w/Falls Church DFA group

Written by: edrie irvine on Aug 8, 2006 1:32 AM EDT

Linked to groups: Arlington/Alexandria Democracy for America

As part of our newly reactivated DFA Arlington(/Alexandria) program, we will join the Falls Church Area DFA Link this Thursday, August 10, to discuss plans for the Iraq War Forum at the end of September. A short movie will also be presented.

Falls Church Area DFA meets at Stacy's Coffee Parlor, 709 W. Broad Street, in downtown Falls Church City. 7-9 p.m. [For those traveling by metro, from the West Falls Church Metro take the 28A (King St Station) at 6:48p to arrive by 7 at Stacy's.]

You may have noticed also that I put the Alexandria part of our title in parentheses. One of our long-time members is interested in having meetings in Alexandria on a regular basis. So we are considering two groups--one for Arlington, one for Alexandria--that will meet separately for the most part but work jointly on programs or parties. Of course, folks are always welcome to attend either group or both! as your time and energy permit. More information on times and places will be coming in our next message.

In the meantime, please think about these topics for our group:

-- Iraq Forum in September: this is a national effort by DFA.

-- GOTV activities: in particular, focusing on registering and mobilizing the largest group of Democratic voters who turned out in low numbers in 2004--single women of all ages.

-- Taking Back Our Elections: active participation in and meaningful oversight of our elections.

I look forward to meeting you all soon.

Interested in reconstituting Arl/Alex DFA?

Written by: edrie irvine on Jul 24, 2006 5:18 PM EDT

Linked to groups: Arlington/Alexandria Democracy for America

Hello,

My name is Edrie Irvine and I am interested in pulling back together the Arlington and Alexandria chapters of Democracy for America. I am contacting you to see if you would be interested in participating, what topics you would like to see the group address, and what role you would like to play.

The mid-term elections coming up in November of this year will play an important role in shaping our country's policies for the final two years of the current Administration. This is an opportunity, not unlike the one we had in 2003 when we first began following Governor Dean, to rise up and take back our country.

On the DFA website, you find this mission statement:
"Inspired by the presidential campaign of Howard Dean, Democracy for America (DFA) is a political action committee dedicated to supporting fiscally responsible, socially progressive candidates at all levels of government--from school board to the presidency."

We are fortunate to live in an area of Virginia where fiscally responsible and socially progressive candidates can and do get elected. But even here, it is not a certainty. The Arlington and Alexandria chapters of DFA can help ensure that our area continues to support the best candidates at all levels of government - through voter registration drives, voter participation efforts, campaign support and debating the issues.

If you would like to see the DFA chapters in this area re-form and become active, for the November 2006 elections and forward, please let me know by responding to this message. If enough people accept this challenge, I will arrange a meeting time and place in the very near future. (We anticipate have two groups - one meeting in Alexandria, one in Arlington, with the larger group joining up together periodically for actions and parties.) Thank you.

GOP CONGRESSMAN SEES THE LIGHT!!!

Written by: Oleg Kis on Jul 12, 2006 8:05 AM EDT

Linked to groups: Arlington/Alexandria Democracy for America

A Republican congressman watches an anti-Bush video and as a result suspects that the Bush administration deliberately allowed 9/11 to happen, and that explosives were the main factor in bringing down three of the World Trade Center buildings. Unbelievable? Here's a transcript of a Town Hall Meeting from April 2006 held with Representative Curt Weldon (R-PA):

Dave Slesinger: First, I want to praise you for your Able Danger efforts. Since you are the Congressman most sympathetic to firefighters, have you looked at the quotes from NYC firefighters at the World Trade Center on 9/11 about explosives? If you have, will you accept information on [this] for later comment?

Rep. Weldon: I will absolutely accept information, and I'm very close to the NYC firefighters because one of my best friends was killed there...

I talk to the fire department on a regular basis. When the Republican convention was held in New York in 2004, I went up a day early, I went down to the fire department headquarters. I spent the day with them. And when I finished the briefings, and getting their input, as to what happened on 9/11, which I had ongoing, I went up and spent two hours running with Engine 54 (inaudible) in midtown Manhattan. And I wanted to do that because on 9/11 all 15 firefighters on duty from that station were killed. And I wanted the firefighters to give me their views without going through any chiefs or other officers about what happened.

Now, there's a lot of theories out there about what occurred. And uh, I haven't gone into the structural elements of the building. The fact that there are reports on multiple explosions on other floors... I am open to that information. I'm willing to challenge the system. And uh, and don't automatically discount anything that's told to me because I've seen, I've seen too much. I mean, ya know, I hate to say that sometimes I don't trust my Government, but sometimes, I don't trust the Government. The bureaucracy. Ya know the best evidence of that is we had the, uh, Tillman, the football player. Joined the army, he was killed. We now find out that the army burned his clothing. So the family never got to get the real story about how Pat Tillman died. Now if it was an accident, so be it. You don't hide that information because somebody is going to be embarrassed.

That's the whole story with Tony Shaffer. It's the bureaucrats trying to hide information and facts, so they're not embarrassed. So, do I automatically accept what the Government tells me? No. And that's why I get myself in trouble. I challenge the CIA, I challenge the DIA. I'll challenge our Defense Department. That's why you send me there. If you want somebody to go there, and just go along, you would send a robot. That would vote the way the party wanted, and would go along with the current President. I won't do that. So I'm absolutely open to any information anyone has that challenges anything about the 9/11 Commission or the work there.

Dave Slesinger speaks up: Congressman, that was my question, I, wanna give out, anybody who wants this, this is a speech by a physics professor at BYU, Steven Jones.

Rep. Weldon: Yeah.

Dave Slesinger: It's the hottest thing happening on the 9/11 issue. In his speech, he praises Congressman Weldon, he's a conservative Republican [or was], he praises Reagan, he quotes St. Paul. I think I have [DVD copies] enough for everybody. Just ask me.

Rep. Weldon: It'll open your eyes, because his allegations are pretty strong.

The video that opened Rep. Weldon's eyes can be seen here:
